Greenpeace Red-Faced

This is just too sweet to pass up:

Before President Bush touched down in Pennsylvania Wednesday to promote his nuclear energy policy, the environmental group Greenpeace was mobilizing.

"This volatile and dangerous source of energy" is no answer to the country's energy needs, shouted a Greenpeace fact sheet decrying the "threat" posed by the Limerick reactors Bush visited.

But a factoid or two later, the Greenpeace authors were stumped while searching for the ideal menacing metaphor.

We present it here exactly as it was written, capital letters and all: "In the twenty years since the Chernobyl tragedy, the world's worst nuclear accident, there have been nearly [FILL IN ALARMIST AND ARMAGEDDONIST FACTOID HERE]."

Had Greenpeace been hacked by a nuke-loving Bush fan? Or was this proof of Greenpeace fear-mongering?

The aghast Greenpeace spokesman who issued the memo, Steve Smith, said a colleague was making a joke by inserting the language in a draft that was then mistakenly released.

"Given the seriousness of the issue at hand, I don't even think it's funny," Smith said.

The final version did not mention Armageddon. It just warned of plane crashes and reactor meltdowns.

I know they say this was just an error - but this is what they are all about: they don't care what the facts are, just find something alarming to say - or take out of context - and use it to fear-monger on the environmental issue.

Lies are the stock in trade of any leftwing group. This is because there is no rationality or even remote connection to common-sense in leftwing thinking. When you are as divorced from reality as a leftist, only a lie can carry your argument forward. If a lefty were to be honest about environmental matters, then they'd have to admit the world is not about to die - and that would cause a drop in donations, because while people are willing to shell out to save the world, they are less inclined to shell out for a marginal improvement in, say, water quality - on the other hand, a lie-less left would allow us to carefully work for cleaner air and water, etc, without misallocating resources due to whatever leftwing lie is being pushed at the moment.

That just made my week :D

Im sorry but when one of the founders of your organization now lectures on why the organization needs to be stopped... then you know you have some problems. And i also find it funny that its icon is a huge diesel burning black ship...

Greenpeace is in sisterhood to PETA. Just another left wing group of alarmist trying to bully via suedo threat the rest of us into believing the B.S. they make up. I love this story.

Greenpeace is an organization that is out of control and is being radicals. Most original members disagree with the anti-nuclear stance.

How does one get a typekey identity?

Posted by: Canuckguy at June 9, 2006 10:41 PM

Greepeace? Gone a week and we have to retrain you!

Posted by: Ash [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 9, 2006 10:56 PM

I don't think PETA is a liberal organization, just nut jobs.

What is nutty about People Eating Tasty Animals?

What makes it even funnier is that “factoid” actually means “a spurious (unverified, incorrect, or invented) ‘fact’ intended to create or prolong public exposure or to manipulate public opinion.”

I suppose that they meant factiod in the more common usage, which is “a small piece of true but often valueless or insignificant information.”

Either way, it’s danged funny.

And you sickos make me sick. You don't understand anything! [INSERT PATHETIC EXCUSE FOR DEFENDING A STUPID, OUT OF CONTROL, LIBERAL ORGANIZATION HERE]

haha sorry, i had to do it! its just begging for it.

I've got news for the tofu-eating, moon-worshipping, Dr. Bronner-using Wiccan coven that calls itself Greenpeace: Armageddon is not a factoid. It's the Lord & Savior's curtain call, His show-stopping finale, the Ultimate Fighting Championships, Celebrity Death Match and American Idol all wrapped up in one.

And besides, what's Greenpeace doing using Armageddon as a fearmongering tool, anyway? It's trademark infringement. Let them stick to pesticides and global warming, and leave the Biblical stuff to us.

It is funny. Does just being around a while make you a legitimate voice? I don't think so, or the KKK would be a legitimate voice.

Greenpeace - I'd be interested in seeing their financial records. I wonder how much a greenpeace staffer or executive makes?

Armageddon isn't in my bible. I use the authorized edition out of Rome.

Nice try conservative bloggers. You try your best to define all groups on the left by calling attention to the fringe groups. Yes, Peta and Greenpeace are leftest groups, but to suggest they represent the whole left is foolish.

Leftest groups can be religious, charitable, concerned about the country, patriotic, and positive. Limbaugh and Fox News are not going to tell you this. I would suggest getting more news from balanced sources. You guys are going to drive yourself crazy talking about Peta and Greenpeace.

Kevin,

Greenpeace and PETA are moderate wings used for fund raising and public statements for their real hard core terrorists in ELF (the envoronmental Liberations Front) and ALF (The Animal Liberation Front).

They are all lefties and you own 'em,

Never once has a democrat politician of any standing denounced their activities. Until that happens they are millstones around your collective necks.

"Leftest groups can be religious, charitable, concerned about the country, patriotic, and positive."

Yet rarely are. Moveon.org won't tell you this however

Posted by: Jonathan [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 10, 2006 07:02 PM

Name some religious, charitable, patriotic, and "positive" liberal groups.

Posted by: Kahn [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 10, 2006 09:11 PM

hey! It's been 24 hours and no-one could name any religious, charitable, patriotic, and "positive" liberal groups!

Yeah, but ever since his movie, Al Gore is riding coach in the air. Is that windbag morphing into another Teddy or what?

Posted by: dickdee at June 12, 2006 03:01 AM

oh but wait...

...what about the beloved & immaculate French building many, many reactors in the next decade?
