Bush Happy Bilbray Won

From Tony Snow's press gaggle earlier this afternoon...

Q Tony, how does the President analyze the results of the 50th congressional district in California?

MR. SNOW: Well, he's happy that Brian Bilbray won. Look, it was a close and tight race all along. But it's also interesting to note that in a case like this, everybody was trying to look for a bellwether. I think a lot of critics were hoping that this would be a kind of bellwether so that they could say that the Republican Party and the presidency were in peril. And they clearly -- their hopes were clearly frustrated.

UPDATE: I unfortunately had to miss a conference call with RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman today, but you can read about it on Human Events' "Right Angle Blog" here. John Hawkins was also on the call.

I'm certainly happy that Bilbray won.

I'm waiting for the Dem spin on how this election was really a moral victory for the Dems, and how it showed the inherent weaknesses of the Republican candidate.

I think it was a referendum on illegal immigration as much as anything else, and if the Republicans don't sit up and take notice of that, it may be an isolated victory.

But a very nice one, nevertheless.....

Almiranta....it's out there already. It's been all over the liberal blogs today and on Chrissy Mathews show.

All of them saying how close it was, yada, yada, yada. At least some of the shows where honest to show that she got what Kerry got in 2004 in the same district.

Some on Democratic Underground (or DUmmies) as we like to call them, are throwing out the "stolen election" excuses again.

When will these sore losers ever learn. I say keep it up, let all of America see how ridiculous they are.

You might want to temper your celebration. He won in large part because he took a tough stance on immigration. A stance that flew in the face of Bush's wishes.

Posted by: Ash [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 7, 2006 08:18 PM

Ash,

And you point is????

The House Republicans are ALL taking the same hard line AGAINST the Bush/Keneddy/McCain Amnesty deal, as well they should. SO don't expect to regain the house in the fall, because Immigration IS the issue, not Bush.

The Senate Rpublicans better take notice, woe be it to those who don't and are running for office.

Posted by: phnxbmed at June 7, 2006 08:29 PM

Well, Ash, you ass, it's a good thing Bush ain't running in November...

Posted by: keefer [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 7, 2006 08:43 PM

Ash

And since no Democrat will take a tough stance on immigration, I don't suspect that will be a winning issue for you guys come November.

Posted by: Warriornation [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 7, 2006 09:52 PM

Now, now keebler. No need to get nasty, all style and no substance one.

Posted by: Ash [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 7, 2006 09:56 PM

warrior, immigration is not as big an issue as you would like to believe.

#1 is the war
#2 is getting the country back on track
#3 is the economy and debt

abortion, smacking down the queers and immigration are far down the totem pole.

Democrats will have plenty of options that they will reveal when the campaigning really starts.

For now, I guess they are content at watching you make fools of yourselves each and every day to the voters.

This election isn't the belweather it was made out to be, although the press would liked to have had the man bites dog story here. Man bites dog, why? Well the 50th district is hardly a left leaning district. In any event the narrowing margin in that "victory" is something to note. 49% to 45%. 4%, while still a victory, is hardly a slam dunk ,particularly in a district known for it's conservative leanings. One election does not a referendum make. I think that is perfectly clear. What I find interesting is the almost uber joy republicans are getting from this win. You would almost think they were feeling that maybe this time, they could really lose. Seems like the salad days of the GOP in which they spoke loudly and proudly of establishing a "permanent majority" are coming to an end. Now they're ecstatic and drenched with sweat if they can pull one congressman in a friendly district to a narrow victory.
I say ,good job guys, good job.

Please, please, please keep saying this. Keep telling your liberal buddies in Congress to campaign on those issues. PLEASE keep doing that. We are all begging you.

We will, among other things, while you put all your eggs into gay marriage and abortion which will net you 15% of the vote while offering all your other republican voters nothing.

Axis....you're Canadian remember? You don't mean anything to anyone.

Posted by: DM at June 8, 2006 09:02 AM

That's funny, I could have sworn that I remember two DEMOCRATIC governors declaring states of emergency in their state because of the immigration problem. I guess it just wasn't a big deal though. I mean, governors declare states of emergency all the time for no reason. It's odd how all of a sudden, since they have no plan to deal with it, democrats don't seem to think it's an important issue. I'm shocked!
