Lend MoveOn a Hand

As a "loyal" member of MoveOn, I got this in the e mail today:

At long last, things are beginning to change. Bush is rivaling Nixon in the polls, congressional Republicans are mired in scandal and almost everybody is looking for a better way. Finally, after years of fighting defensive battles against right-wing threats, we progressives now have a golden opportunity to put forward our own positive ideas to win elections and lead the nation.

This week, we're launching a national effort to create the official MoveOn positive agenda—three clear, positive goals for our country that we'll campaign for in 2006 and beyond. This is an important decision and we're turning to MoveOn members to lead the way.

The conversation begins this Thursday, May 25th, with a national round of Positive Agenda house parties. The more folks who come, the better the results will be...

...At the Positive Agenda House Parties we'll get to discuss an exciting question: What do we most want to see progressives accomplish once we take back the reins in Washington? Universal health care? Clean energy? Diplomacy abroad? The sky's the limit.

After the discussion, each party will decide its favorites and send in the results. The whole process should take about an hour. Then, the entire MoveOn membership will get a list of the top rated options and vote online to pick the final three.

Wonderful - "Universal health care? Clean energy? Diplomacy abroad? The sky's the limit". Just what the American people have been waiting for - government-run healthcare and more talks with France about the best way to surrender in the War on Terrorism.

Still, it is nice that MoveOn thought to ask me what I think the three leftwing issues should be for 2006 - nice, and a bit shocking: that coalition of single issue fanatics which makes up the left couldn't agree on only three issues if their lives depended on it. So, lets help 'em out - I vote for the aforementioned diplomacy and socialised medicine, but lets throw in gay marriage, federally funded abortion on demand and gun control...if we can get the left to campaign on any two of these issues, I guarantee 20 more Republicans in the House next year....err, I mean, I guarantee absolute leftwing victory, so get at it you MoveOn types!

"Universal health care? Clean energy? Diplomacy abroad? The sky's the limit" NO actually that does sound really good. Why can bush accomplish anything besides getting people killed, fired or making americans poorer (not counting the top 1%).

Posted by: Francis at May 23, 2006 03:18 AM

Francis,

Well, its a Republican thing - we just like to kill people, fire them and make them poorer...we're just a bunch of insensitive SOB's...when we're not just too stupid to know we should be voting Democrat.

You're going to college and thats the best you can do? I know its late, but surely there's a Prof who can give you a few lefting polemic pointers...

I can't wait for my USA-Brand healthcare! I could have paid for it myself and gotten treated immediately, but now I'm on a wait list and paying twice as much taxes!! No matter that I paid for college by working full-time and ammassing lots and lots of loans, managed to get a job and ultimately have to pay more than the alcoholic dropout next to me who got fired. Fair's fair, am I right?

Also, have you heard? USA-Brand Family Co. has so fortunately cut into our birth rate by making all abortions legal! I hope that solves our pesky liability and responsibility problems. Also they have been making a mockery out of marriage, in hopes of demonizing to the point of beeing a simple tax status, which means we only have to pay $5000 a year in taxes. Boy, Rick and Tom must sure like that marriage penalty!

Oh, and who can't wait for USA-Brand energy? But we can't have coal, nuclear, or oil energy, since it harms the enviorment, or that we can't have wind or solor power since its an eye sore, or that we can't have hydroelectric power since a few fishes migh get killed in the process. But fortunately, the USA-Brand R&D department is researching a powerplant fueled by the bulls--t provided so generously by progressives.

The bestest thing in the whole world ever is that the USA-Brand Co. has been bought by UN Global Corp. which has outsourced our soverignty, will, tradition etc. and defense to Al-Queda Inc. In exchange, AQI has promised to attack a might less frequently, and that out murdered loved ones are acceptable sacrifices to the almightly Allah.

I'm so glad we have USA-Brand! Who needs capitalism or economy when you can give your money straight to them!? I sure hated my free will and my constitutional rights. Thank God, I mean Allah, for USA-Brand!

My Three favorites, guarunteed to win the hearts and minds of the electorate:

1. Gay Marraige
2. Fedeally finded abortion on demand
3. Immediate FULL citizenship NOW for all illegal aliens.

My prediciction for Move ON:

1. Immediate withdrawl from Iraq
2. Reversal of the Bush tax cuts
3. Universal Healthcare

The net result of the above will be:

1. Our withdrawl from Iraq leads to Al Queda declaring victory in Iraq on Al-Jazeera, thereby encouraging a new wave of terrorist recruiting aimed at infiltrating and destroying the US from within.

2. The resultant tax hikes throw the economy into a tailspin resulting in a severe recession, and an unemplyment rate of about 10%.

3. The 12 million new citizens immediately register and vote Democrat, thereby securing permanent Democrat rule.

4. The skyrocketing costs of government provided healthcare coupled with dwindling tax revenues due to the poor economy, drive up the deficit to the bewilderment of the moonbats, who blame it on Bush, who is brought back from retirement, tried and hung in the Rotunda for High Crimes.

5. Dems institute a Federal Tax on assets to try and stop the balooning deficit.

6. Private ownership of motor vehicles is banned in order to stop global warming.

7. Dems nationalize the oil industry.

8. The Republican party is banned and its leaders are executed in show trials. All citizens who are found to have been members or contributors are sent to re-education camps in the Mojave desert.

9. 30 years from now, healthcare is rationed, and euthenasia is mandated for anyone over 65, thereby solving the Social Security problem.

10. Private property is confiscated and banned.

11. 40 years from now President Chelsea Clinton agrees to pay dimmi to Saudi Arabia, which is now controlled by Al Queda.

12. Mexico & Canada build walls at the border to stem the gowing tide of refugees and illegals streaming across their borders in search of jobs.

13. 46 years from now Muslim Fundemantalists take over the government in a blodless coudeta, when former President Chelsea Clinton, resigns.

14. The washintom Monument is turned into the World's tallest minaret.

15. 50 years from now, the Capitol building is renamed the Osama Bin Laden Mosque.

16. 51 years from now all homosexuals are rounded up and executed under Shari'a Law.

17. 60 years from now the world is destroyed in nuclear holocaust launched by the Muslim leaders of Eurabia and North Amerarabia, when the Chinese try foreclose on their loans to the world, now completely in debt to China, the worlds only super power.

Last I checked, Bush had a 40% approval at Rasmussen.

Not quite Nixonian.

MoveOn.org is a bunch of ritired CIA Operations Officers like Valerie Plame and Larry Johnson?

Posted by: Insufik at May 23, 2006 09:04 AM

Is this being sponsored by One Hour Optical?

The whole process should take about an hour.
Could they really go a whole hour without Bush Bashing, and stay on a positive idea? IF they can do it --- they should make a TV series, I'd be willing to watch concerned citizens talking positive and trying to help this country.

Totally unrelated, but thought I'd share it.

No Mark, you wouldn't want universal health care like we have here in Canada. Everyone gets it and is entitled to the same care. You way is better, only the rich get it and the rest can go to hell.

Much better to have 40 million americans left with no health insurance like you have right now. When bush took office, this was down to about 18 million. Now many middle class families with both the husband and wife can't afford it.

Posted by: axis [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 23, 2006 12:18 PM

Axis,

I have to admit, your health system IS so much further advanced than ours. We won't be rationing services for at least 10 or 20 years while Canada is already doing it.

The policy of waiting lists for the elderly, in Canada the UK and Europe, is specifically designed to weed out, through attrition (read DEATH), a percentage of those patients on the waiting list. This reduces healthcare costs by what amounts to denial of service, and it has the added benefit (to the state) of reducing longterm care costs and social security payments to the elderly.

A very advanced system you have there hoser.

Assis,
EVERYONE here gets health care; just drop by the local emergency room. Of course, you could go see a doctor in the Canadian programme; as long as you're not too old, or too sick, you'll get some mediocre treatment from a marginal government physician. And then there's those second rate medicines that we've rejected from here; don't be surprised if your teeth fall out from the veterinary medicines they give you. but hey, everyone get's the same treatment, except the really sick; they come here for treatment.

I always love the argument that we are making the rich richer, and the poor poorer. The rich need to pay their fair share...but how is fair determined? Amount or percentage? Because last time I checked, as a California school teacher, I do not qualify as the "top 5%", yet my wife and I pay nealry 20% in taxes...my dad, a self-made business man, pays nearly 30%...yet some bum is going to tell me that I don't pay my fair share when his paltry 5% (if that) is in the same class...good God, no wonder they want universal health care...they want me to pay for it as well...

Posted by: Todd at May 23, 2006 06:24 PM

Axis,

Have you checked on the rate of post-operative infections in Canada as opposed to the US?

You see, when you have private care which can be sued for malpractice, you get much better care than you get from government employees whom you can't fire...

Jim,

If you're paying 10k per year for health care then you are either very rich and thus buying your own insurance, or you are not living in the United States.

Posted by: Mark Noonan [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 23, 2006 08:46 PM

EVERYONE here gets health care; just drop by the local emergency room.

Sorry, emergency care does not equal health care. Health care includes well-patient visits that you'll never get in an ER, as well as visits for non-emergency illnesses. You know, those check-ups where they catch things early and can fix them then for a few hundred bucks, as compared to the tens of thousands it may cost if you wait until it requires a trip to emergency (if it can be fixed at all by then).

Oh and if you think that the uninsured can just walk into an emergency room and get free care with no consequences, you're crazy. Patients are still obligated to pay for the services they receive, even if they can't afford it, and hospitals can and do report non-payment to the credit reporting agencies. The non-payments are also passed on to the patients that do pay (i.e. you) in the form of higher rates and insurance premiums. So it's a bad idea all around.

Posted by: gms at May 24, 2006 01:13 AM

gms,
The point being that in this country, poor get free healthcare, illegals use the system to get free healthcare, working have insurance, and the rich pay their own way. We don't have a healthcare delivery problem; we have a finer healthcare system that the Canadians socialized system, with much better results.

I recognize that the ER doesn’t replace the family physician or wellness treatments, but around here, the ER is the primary method of healthcare delivery for our burgeoning illegal population. There is no recourse for payment from these customers of the system. Even raising rates is insufficient; this is why so many hospitals and trauma centers have closed in Southern California.

Posted by: Rathaven [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 24, 2006 11:48 AM

Mark,
Just a friendly word of advice. Your posts are sounding increasingly bitter and childish. These pointless name calling attacks on the left are really getting boring. I know you are all in a bunch because your president and party are going down in flames. It's ironic that you deride democrats for having no agenda except to engage in personal attacks. All I ever see on this site anymore is you practicing what you preach against. Really sad when the hypocracy is this thick!
Well it's not that bad. Looking on the bright side, AAR is still more rabidly ridiculous than you so not all is lost.

Posted by: jeff at May 24, 2006 03:02 PM

No, the point is that emergency care does not equal health care. One more time now: emergency care does not equal health care! And it's not free if it ruins your credit report and results in you getting hounded by collections agencies.

The illegals are a red herring to this discussion. There are plenty of poor, legal citizens for whom the ER is the only care they ever get. For that matter, there are a lot of not-so-poor, legal citizens in the same boat. To say we don't have a health care problem in this country is burying your head in the sand, no matter what our friends to the north are doing.

Posted by: gms at May 24, 2006 03:17 PM

Waiting lists? Sure Canada has some waiting list problem, but seriously, have you ever TRIED to get into one of those free hospitals in the US? They wait times are far worse
