Immigration Reform Taking Shape... And So Far, I Like What I See
I understand and accept the fact that when it comes to immigration, I'm never going to be totally happy with every proposal made or passed. That being said, I don't think it is mere coincidence that in the days following Bush's speech on immigration we've actually started to see serious solutions being brought to the table to address the immigration problem. The 370 mile triple-layer fence is a great first step that I am pleased to was passed.
Much to my surprise, the Senate also took another important step towards meaningful immigration reform yesterday when they agreed that English should be the national language of the United States. Since Bush spoke, we've seen immigration reform take steps in the right direction.
Click here to donate to the Republican Party to show your approval of both the 370 mile fence, and approving making English the official language of the United Sates... Send them a donation of $37, $370, or any amount ending in .37.

Mark,
I understand you are a huge supporter of the President. I am as well and that's why I read this blog on a daily basis. However, for the passed couple of days on this website I can not help but feel like I am reading the Presidents own personal "immigration achievements" Diary.
I mean, it is great to take a glass half full approach. But at some point you gotta ask yourself, "full of what?"

Oh too bad, I love watching conservatives kill themselves over this issue! I also love the fact it exposes the racist roots of the Republican party!!

You like the fact that the Senate voted to allow illegals SS funds when they committed fraud/identity theft?
Also, I have doubts the wall will be built anytime soon, if at all. There will be lawsuits and political maneuvering. They already have all the laws they need NOW to do what should be done.
However, the 'amnesty' process will proceed and 10 to 12 million of those now 'in the dark' will become citizens. Which, in turn, will encourage millions more to come here illegally. It's just so much easier than doing the paperwork and waiting in any line.
Too bad the coyotes cannot band together and create an IPO. At least I could make a few bucks off the process. Could be a nice retirement plan.

The only good news i know of is that congress isnt going to pass this insanity bill the soon to be voted out of office senate is trying to pass. Corporate America, Mexican Lobbyist must have paid big money to bush and the senate for them to sell us out. I mean its all a scam he is putting 6000 troops along the border who cant do nothing. That is pointless and i laughed my butt off when i saw him riding around in a open field in a circle in that buggy trying to make it look like it actually patroled the border. Does he think we are stupid. Fact of the matter is Congress will not pass this bill, Senate will be voted out of office and maybe if we are lucky Ted Kennedy will finally be removed

Accoring to one provision in the bill, if an illegal immagrant shows a scrap or paper (forged or not) showing that he/she was here, during the amnesty-that's-not-an-amnesty period, he/she can appiy for legal status, and can't be deported until after the adjudication of their case.
This effectively means that they wait until the 12 million illegals ahead of them in the court system go through the process. There are still cases being adjudicated from the 1986 amnesty. In addition, guess who picks up the lawyers and court costs...you got it...we taxpayers do!!
Additionally, according to the Heritage Foundation, this bill will allow entry to approximately 109 MILLION new immigrants over the next 20 years.
The President just sent out our memo to opinion leaders saying that it would only be 8 Million over the next 10 years. They don't say what happens in the last 10 years. And what they forgot to say is that doesn't include the 6 million expected to gain citizenship from the 12 million already here.
Can you say Ayyyy chiwawa!??!
When Chuck Hagel, Ted Kennedy and Harry Reid start agreeing with the President there is something really wrong.
The more I hear about this the less I like it.
Can you say:
United States of Hispanoamerica?

I read a fascinating artile yesterday at www.humaneventsonline.com about how the Social Security Administration keeps lists of all the invalid SSN's that employers send in each year for the W-2's. The SSA is PROHIBITED BY LAW from sharing that information with the INS!
Can you believe it?!?! Thank you over bloated government. So, we know where the illegals are being employed, but we'll do nothing about it.

How can you call granting illegal immigrants Social Security benefits based on their illegal, forged, stolen Social Security numbers? How in the world did the Senate defeat the ammendment by Senator Ensign? The only hope for our country dealing with this immigration fiasco is the House of Representatives standing up to the Senate and basically saying Hell No... Also, what good is a 370 mile fence going to do? Does anyone out there really believe that's going to put any dent into the massive invasion? We need a fence that covers the entire border, from the Pacific to the Gulf of Mexico...
I am in total disbelief... The Senate is abandoning the American people...

I agree that English should be the official language, but I think some teeth should be added to the legislation concerning the subject. Specifically, I'm always troubled by the way a lot of people mangle the language, and so I think a law should be passed that you have to get at least a 600 on the verbal portion of an SAT test (you have to take it over if you haven't received the 600 in the last 10 years). If you don't, you're subject to daily fines until you achieve that score. I see a lot of bad english in the writings of many conservative people from the so-called heartland, and, to be honest, I have an easier time understanding some of my hispanic brethren here in Miami than I do these writers. Some of these far-right wingers don't appear to be all that educated (they split infinitives, constantly use "who" when they should use "whom" - that sort of thing). Why can't these so-called super-patriots learn to use English properly?

This is one of those policies that tries to please so many groups, that it ends up pleasing no one. The fence and the 6,000 National Guard reinforcements were purely political ploys to pacify the right-wing,America first base. Of course no one has thought about what all this is going to end up costing tax-payers, and whether it will be cost-effective.
Also, not many terrorists come in from the Mexican border. I have not heard one word in Bush's speech about border security on our border with Canada, where terrorists HAVE tried to infiltrate. But still, it makes the right wing feel good, they're doing something about the dirty Mexicans, so America still belongs to Americans.
And Bush's business community is appeased, with the conservatives distracted by the fence and guard along the border, the guest worker plan will ensure a ready supply of cheap, reliable labor-ready and willing to be exploited. American workers now can count on their wages being lowered, benefits slashed, and hours lenghtened as they compete with a foreign underclass for jobs.
