Bush got high marks from The Washington Post for his Monday speech on immigration:
But for the first time in such a setting, the president stated eloquently that enforcement is not sufficient. He insisted on 'comprehensive' reform, which he said must include a temporary visa program and a route to legality for the undocumented immigrants who are here -- what he called a 'rational middle ground' between amnesty and deportation
I know many conservatives are still unsatisfied, but I don't believe any other President would be willing to address the immigration issue as President has. Politicians can often talk tough about immigration, but political realities have to sink in at some point. President Bush certainly took a more centrist approach to the problem, but that's probably the one that has the best chance of passing.
Conservatives can be mad all they want that we're not building a 12 foot thick and 20 foot high wall along the border, and kicking out all the illegals that are here, but no one can convince me that such a plan (or reasonable equivalents) would ever get through Congress. We do have a problem and we need to address it, but we can't solve it overnight, and we need to take it one step at a time. President Bush talked about the importance of learning English, and I agree with him, but he stopped short of calling for English being made the official language of this country, which I feel is extremely important. But I won't condemn him for not going the full nine yards. I'd rather him go 7 or 8 yards in the right direction then let a Democrat take us 100 yards in the wrong direction.

The best argument I've ever seen against declaring English our official language: It will result in calls for recognition of secondary languages, or for certain states to declare that they have two official languages, or three.
Pennsylvania was officially bi-lingual, Dutch and English, until the 1950s. Dutch just dropped away in common use so the state dropped it.
Make English the official language at the federal level and watch efforts start to make California, Texas, or New Mexico declare themselves officially bi-lingual, with all the Hell that will bring.
This may be one where it's better to let inertia take its course, you know?

Well, I don't know if being on the same side as the Washington Post is a good thing Matt. Most of the time they're dead flat wrong about issues.

Senator, I would like to express my displeasure with the Presidents proposal on the illegal immigration problems. The U.S. must secure its borders first and than discuss a guest-worker program. I am opposed to a guest-worker plan that couls lead to citizenship for illegal immegrats who broke our laws. If the Republican Party gives in on this issue I will not vote for a Republican again. This will show that your party is no different than the Democrats. I voted for President Bush because I thought he was sincere in protecting American. I am having second thoughtrs.
Sincerely

Wow, so now when the liberal Washington Post praises something Bush did we think it’s a good thing? I am sure Teddy Kennedy liked a lot of Bush’s speech too, so is that a good thing?
Bush played it to not lose and when you do that you can’t win.

A " 'rational middle ground' between amnesty and deportation" is exactly what we need---but that does not, and cannot, include citizenship as an option for those who have shown such disrespect for our laws and our country.
