Open Thread: Bush's Immigration Speech

Tonight, George W. Bush will speak to the country about immigration. Feel free to use this space to discuss his speech. Posted in the extended entry are excerpts of speech released to the media.

On the President’s vision for comprehensive immigration reform:

“We are a Nation of laws, and we must enforce our laws. We are also a Nation of immigrants, and we must uphold that tradition, which has strengthened our country in so many ways. These are not contradictory goals – America can be a lawful society and a welcoming society at the same time. We will fix the problems created by illegal immigration, and we will deliver a system that is secure, orderly, and fair.”
On Border Security:
“Since I became President, we have increased funding for border security by 66 percent, and expanded the Border Patrol from about 9,000 to 12,000 agents. . . .we have apprehended and sent home about six million people entering America illegally.

“Despite this progress, we do not yet have full control of the border, and I am determined to change that. Tonight I am calling on Congress to provide funding for dramatic improvements in manpower and technology at the border."

On the Importance of a Temporary Worker Program to relieve pressure on the border:
“The reality is that there are many people on the other side of our border who will do anything to come to America to work and build a better life. They walk across miles of desert in the summer heat, or hide in the back of 18-wheelers to reach our country. This creates enormous pressure on our border that walls and patrols alone will not stop. To secure the border effectively we must reduce the numbers of people trying to sneak across."

On enforcing our laws:
“. . . we need to hold employers to account for the workers they hire. It is against the law to hire someone who is in this country illegally. Yet businesses often cannot verify the legal status of their employees, because of the widespread problem of document fraud. Therefore, comprehensive immigration reform must include a better system for verifying documents and work eligibility . . .

“A tamper-proof card would help us enforce the law – and leave employers with no excuse for violating it. And by making it harder for illegal immigrants to find work in our country, we would discourage people from crossing the border illegally in the first place.”

On the President’s opposition to amnesty:
“. . . we must face the reality that millions of illegal immigrants are already here. They should not be given an automatic path to citizenship. This is amnesty, and I oppose it. Amnesty would be unfair to those who are here lawfully – and it would invite further waves of illegal immigration."

On assimilation:
“. . . we must honor the great American tradition of the melting pot, which has made us one Nation out of many peoples. The success of our country depends upon helping newcomers assimilate into our society, and embrace our common identity as Americans. Americans are bound together by our shared ideals, an appreciation of our history, respect for the flag we fly, and an ability to speak and write the English language.”

On the tone of the debate:
“We must always remember that real lives will be affected by our debates and decisions, and that every human being has dignity and value no matter what their citizenship papers say.”

If you do not want human beings streaming over our borders be sure that CEO's and business owners aren't hiring them. You do that by raiding the offending businesses and jailing and fining the owners or CEO's. This is a law and order issue. Peace

I had to take the puppies outside and missed the end of the speech.

At least this president makes an effort to do the heavy lifting--no matter what the stinkin' polls say!!!

Posted by: keefer [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 15, 2006 08:20 PM

keefer,
Is that because the puppies are here illegally?

Posted by: Bane of Liberals' Existence [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 15, 2006 08:24 PM

lol Bane, but no, they just like to go outside whenever I want to watch something on TV.

Yeah, Steve, whatever--it's been a law and order issue for twenty years, idiot!

I expect good things from this venture.
First of all, I expect Congress to pass it. If a Republican majority can't see its way to pass a measure like this one, then they might as well call an election and get it over with.
Second, I am hopeful that the administration will see fit to publish the data this time. This is the first I've heard about the 6 million illegals spotted and caught. I want to know, I want to see, illegals being returned, CEOs being fined, and fences being built.

I do have some reservations. National Guardsmen are not trained to be border guards - they are trained to be soldiers. This situation could backfire in several ways, not the least of which being the illegals still getting in, and a few Guardsmen getting shot.
I hope that corporate influence doesn't turn this exercise into a sham.
Finally, I hope that Mexico can be brought on board. This will work a lot easier if Fox co-operates.

President Bush missed the boat tonight.

1. Tonight, I will make it clear where I stand, and where I want to lead the our country.

Mr. Bush, who do you represent Mexico or the legal people of The United States of America?

2. We must begin by recognizing the problems with our immigration system.

Mr. Bush, where have you been for the past 6 years?

3. Once here, illegal immigrants live in the shadows of our society.

Mr. President who did you see marching on our sovereign soil. They didn't look too afraid.... did they waving their Mexican flags??

4. We're a nation of laws, and we must enforce our laws.

Mr. Bush, thanks for waking up! It's good you realize we are a nation of laws.

Mr. Bush you didn't say anything that the educated American people of this great country don't already know. You let us down again. This is our country Mr. Bush, not just yours!!! Set us on a course that the American people want and support. Thank you!!!

Why don't I here any solutions that will work comming from D.C. There is really only one solution when you look at this logically. They come here for jobs, so make it a crime to hire a illegal alien; then inforce it strongly, but I don't think Bush or many in the senate really want to do anything that will send any home. We end up with the same problem, millions will still be flooding across, maybe not where the National Guard is set up (maybe). Then again the National Guard will probablly be ordered to give them water and point them to the next nearest watering hole... It always seems like you keep telling yourself,"Maybe the next elected idiot will do something right"!!!

Alot of people are misinformed about Illegal Immigrants. They do not take jobs from us, and they most definately pay taxes. Infact, most illegal mexicans have extra taxes taken out so they won't owe. (since they can't file to get ANY money back). Secondly, why hasn't anyone commented on illegals other than mexicans?
In the presidents speech, he even stated illegals from other countries are harder to return,-they are let out into our country with a court date, which they never show up to.
Also, when it comes to crime...How many mexicans are involved w/crime in our country?
I rarely hear about any, & to top it off mexicans LOVE our country. They think highly of Americans.
There are many other latin countries that aren't doing our country any good.
I think it's time we close our mouth, and open our eyes.

Posted by: Karen at May 16, 2006 09:28 AM

Oh Karen,
I think it's time you came to Southern California, or Arizona or New Mexico, or Nevada, or Texas. Come see your future, you'll feel like an outsider in your own country. Stop by the hospital waiting room, study up on your Spanish, as many of the nurses and orderlies don't speak English. For a lark, stop by the county jail, or State prison, there are three within 20 miles of me. 30% illegal aliens in our prison system and the overwhelming majority are Mexican. These are violent criminals, too, not in jail because their here illegally, in jail because they murder, rape, rob, and commit mayhem.
Illegals take much more out of the society than they pay back in taxes, just take a walk through the neighborhoods in South Orange county; dozens of people living in small apartments and only a few actually work for wages. The majority are sucking our school systems, health care and emergency services dry.
Illegal Mexicans, when they actually work for wages claim 6 dependents on their witholding form because they know 7 will cause an audit.
Mexican love this country so much they wave their flags in our faces and demand we pay for all of their wants, needs and desires. The “protest” waving flags from a land so disgusting even they wouldn’t live there.
I suggest you open your eyes and look around before it isn’t your country anymore. ¿Tứ sabes?

I fully respect what you say, and I'd have to say the situation over here on the east coast is very different. I'm extremely suprised that they have the intellect to know how to file their dependents--Especially if they are illegal, mexicans don't have SSN'S, they would need to apply for a pin w/the IRS & to do that, they would need a passport, or other documentation, which illegals do not have.
so I'm wondering if you work for a tax service that you have this information, or if it's like everything else & just hear say.
As for your area, I don't understand how it even got like that. If everyone from stores to hospitals only speak spanish, where are all the americans working?
This will always be our Country,- The Land of the Free.

Karen,
Illegals are brought across by coyotes, they don't just get them here; they teach them how to blend in. They do more business from the illegals calling home to report they're doing okay, and recommending the coyote that got them here safely.
Social Security numbers are sold along with fake documentation; the coyotes are legal and know how to get a SS # under a fake name, this number is distributed to several “clients.” All they need is a dozen fake numbers and they can issue cards to hundreds of illegals. As an employer, I saw fake SS cards all the time.
I worked at a restaurant in San Juan Capistrano years back; we had employees with fake ID’s that would get scooped up in INS raids, deported to Mexico and are back at work the next day. the coyotes taught the restaurant workers that when INS shows up, the illegals sit down with a cup of coffee in front of them; INS can't bother "customers."
Many employers prefer hiring illegals; they show up on time, work their whole shift, never complain about working conditions, never ask for a raise or a day off, and always have an endless supply of “cousins” that can fill in if the employer needs more workers. This creates a permanent underclass; holds down wages, and encourages employers to cheat the system. Construction is the worst; illegals will do jobs for $7.50/hr that a union worker would demand $15.00/hr or more. Illegals can do this because they live 10-15 to a home, pool their resources, don’t pay for insurance of any kind, and game the system for all of their health care needs.
Remember when you hear someone say that there are people without health care, they really mean without health insurance; everyone has access to free healthcare if they use the emergency room for all their treatment.
Because their community lives within ours, and because there is often little or no interaction outside of their community, they do not have to assimilate, speak English or follow our customs. A hospital in a barrio services only a Spanish speaking clientele; the nurses speak Spanish all day at work and at home. My daughter was involved in an auto accident and was taken to one such hospital in Riverside, CA. We actually had to wait while they tried to find someone to interpret to the triage nurse. Riverside is 2 ½ hours from the border. There are parts of LA and Orange County that are worse; you wouldn’t find a nurse to translate for you.

This isn't immigration, this is an invasion.

Posted by: Bane of Liberals' Existence [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 16, 2006 07:18 PM

It's not cruel to ship them back! What about all those that have gone through the legal process, and still have a long wait ahead of them, while these criminals get to remain here? THAT'S CRUEL. Bush wants to reward people that break our laws, and sovernty! I intend on voting any politican out that allows this to pass! Most Americans don't want it, and Congress had better listen to the people that put them in office!

"Also, when it comes to crime...How many mexicans are involved w/crime in our country?
I rarely hear about any." Karen

You aren't really that naive are you? 40% of the inmates in the California penal system are illegal immigrants.

90% of the outstanding warrants in LA County for MURDER are illegal aliens.

The reason that everyone talks about Mexican is that they comprise 60 to 70% of all illegals. almost 10% of the population of Mexico now resides within our borders ILLEGALLY!!!!

Annually illegals transfer $60 Billion out of the country that could otherwise be circulating in our economy.

Get your hear out of the sand.
