President Bush to Speak on Immigration

Just watched a TV news report that said President Bush is requesting media time at 8pm eastern on Monday to adderss the nation - the subject is supposed to be about immigration. I have no other details, but lets have at it:

What do you think the President will say? What do you think he should say?

If it's about immigration he'll say:

Let's have a guest worker program (amnesty).

He should say:

We're going to lock down the borders and round up the 11 million illegals and ship them back. If Mexico can send them over, we can send 'em back.

Posted by: Art Patscheck at May 12, 2006 10:09 AM

I am sure that President Bush will talk about the work the illegals are doing. He will try to make us understand why most of them should be allowed citizenship. Then he will, once again, explain to us that the amnesty programs he supports isn't amnesty at all. Same old same old.

Personally, I don't want to hear it.

Posted by: Dorothy at May 12, 2006 10:41 AM

NO, he'll say, how hard they work and American's don't. Then give them the keys to the house!

Posted by: Bobbie at May 12, 2006 11:04 AM

I can't believe, he would use the chance to push the same old thing. Yes, he will push for a worker program that many will call amnesty. But I have to think that someone showed him some poll numbers in the last couple of weeks and Bush will speak on border security and perhaps the need for a fence.

Posted by: jbwbubba at May 12, 2006 11:18 AM

What Bush should say is this:

"We are a nation of immigrants but are more importantly a nation of laws and tonightd I am taking immediate steps to call up the National Guard to assist the Minute Men (who I mistakenly referred to as vigilantees when in fact I should have called them Patriots) to patrol our southern border. We will not allow our federal immigration laws to be violated any longer with impugnity. We will man the border with armed guardsmen and increase our border patrol by 75k. We will then construct security fences where appropriate using the San Diego Barrier as a tamplate. I am also calling on Congress immediately as a national security issue to appropriate funds to develop technologiges to aid in our ability to identify those who enter our country illegally. My first priority as Commander and Chief is to uphold the Constitution and our federal laws. We conservatives support immigration, LEGAL immigration. We will not reward the intentional vilation of our federal immigration laws any longer.

As to the 15 million illegal aliens in our country, while I don't doubt that many came here for a better life, there are a great many that have comitted crimes that are in our federal prisons. I am calling for their immediate deportation back to their country of origin. American tax payers should not have to subsidize their 3 square meals, weight lifting, and cable. As for the rest of the illegals, under my proposal, they have 30 days to register with local police to receive identification. If they fail to do so and are caught, they will be deported without any questions asked. Those that do turn themselves in and are properly identified will have an opportunity to pay a fine and work toward citizenship after returning back to their country of origin. That is how our system is supposed to work and I will make sure that we work toward ensuring that it does.

For companies who provide a magnet to illegals who use them as cheap labor and pay them below market wages under the table, the minimum fine per illegal employed will be 100k and 10 years in prison. It is both unfair to immigrants from around the world who play by the rules and unethical to treat these illegals as second class citizens. That is not what our country is about.

Finally, I am calling on Congress to reform the archaic immigration laws on the books to make it easier for for well qualified immigrants from around the world to come to our country, conribute to our culture, and assimilate to our uniquely American melting pot. We must ensure that highly bureacratic and onerous immigration policies/systems don't dissuade immigrants from coming to our country legally. We should institute a legal immigration system immediately that streamlines the process and ensures that we are importing the highly skilled workers to our country who wish to contribute and become Americans. The future of our national security and prosperity depend on it.

Thank you and go back to your innane reality TV shows and porn.

Dubya

If he said this and talked a little about how fundamentally, protecting and defending our borders is a national security imperative, and how fighting the Jihadists in Iraq makes no sense if we "leave the back door open at home" that would resonate with Americans and I guarantee he would have at least a 755 approval rating overnight.

A Temporary Worker Program Is vital to securing the border. A Temporary Worker Program would make the system more rational, orderly, and secure by providing a legal way to match willing foreign workers with willing American employers to fill jobs that Americans are not willing to do. This program would help meet the demands of our growing economy and allow honest workers to provide for their families while respecting the law. One thing I want you to know about me is that no matter how pressurized it may seem, I'm not changing what I believe. I'm not changing. My job is to make decisions based on what I think is right. I'm the decider and I decide what's best.

Posted by: Aitch [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 12, 2006 11:47 AM

I don't think he will sound as tough as his conservative base will probably demand. He will certainly anger anew the liberal "America without borders" crowd. But, as always, he will say what he believes and accept the consequences.

I do not understand what all this crap about a guest worker program. The US already has a guest workers program. It's called a work visa. I say send them all back and let them apply for a visa just like all of the other immigrants are required to do.

I agree with Art Patscheck about what the President will say, unfortunately (not unfortunate that I agree with Patscheck, just to clarify).

What I'd like to see the President say:

a) He should unequivocally commit to securing our border by any means necessary including posting military personnel along the border as we build a wall/fence/secured area. This should be top priority and should be approached with a sense of national urgency. If we can send troops to Iraq to secure their borders, we must do the same here at home;

b) He should strongly commit to enforcing existing laws regarding illegal trespassing;

c) He should acknowledge the voices of concern that are growing in number and he should be willing to change his position on some aspects of the immigration issue, including his much-touted "Guest Worker" (read that, "Amnesty") Program;

d) He should acknowledge the efforts of the Minuteman Patrol Border Project and retreat from calling them "vigilantes."

e) He should acknowledge the efforts of individual states (Arizona, Georgia, etc.) as they grapple with the issues confronting them due to the lack of action by the Federal government. In particular, he should support the efforts of Sheriff Arapaio in Arizona in fighting the good fight;

f) He must clearly restate his admiration for America's proud tradition of openness to LEGAL immigration;

g) He must send a strong message to the American public and to the Mexican government that this country will set its own immigration policy, including enforcement techniques. He should make it absolutely clear to his subordinates in the Dept. of National Security and the Border Patrol that they MUST enforce our immigration laws and will cease collaborating with the Mexican government to the extent that it hampers efforts to retain a sense of border security.

h) The President must lay down a detailed, step-by-step plan for achieving border security with measurable results required each step of the way before proceeding to the next step;

i)The President should address the businesses that are profiting from illegal trespassers and make it clear to them that there are consequences to their profiteering in what amounts to de facto slave labor practices. He should commit to tracking down these businesses and punishing them heavily.

I strongly disagree that the President should suggest rounding up 11+ million people and ship them back to Mexico. It is, prima facia, Un-American to suggest that we engage is such jackbooted tactics. By enforcing existing laws and making high-profile examples of greedy businesses, attrition will take its toll and many, many of these illegal trespassers will find a way to get themselves back to their homeland on their own. To take the time, effort and money to track them down and ship them back is only throwing good money after bad. Given our current budget, there is simply no more cash in the trough to be had. Unless, that is, Congress, in its "wisdom", decides to simply raid the Social Security "Trust Fund" one more time. But that's a subject for another thread...

I'd like to hear all of these things come from the President, but I'm not holding my breath. If I don't hear at least substantive lip service to these issues, then the Republican party can consider that I will not support them any longer.

Bush will not faithfully enforce the laws of the United States. He is the anti-conservative president!

Aitch said

Aitch, you may want to read the Constitution. The presiden't role as chief executive is not to make decision based on what he thinks is "right." It is his job to make decsions based soley on the Consitution of the United States and to fairly and imparitally execute the laws of our nation.

Sadly he will try to placate we conservatives with some additional military on the border.

Meanwhile, he will talk nonsense about those who have broken the law by sneaking into the country about going to the back of the line. Of course said line is in this country.

He will talk about them paying a fine, which they won't. There will be sob stories about how poor Juan was just short of having the money, because he had to feed his kids, when caught.

Add to that other sob stories about the hard working peons who were here one year and eleven months and just missed.

And by the way, did you know that coyotes gave dated tickets to those they smuggle in? It sure will come in handy so as to prove a person has been here two years and thus qualifies to stay.

Posted by: TiminPhoenix at May 12, 2006 12:43 PM

You may be right dbogdan about not needing to round up the illegals. If they have no where to work, they'll have to leave. My only concern is that they would turn to crime in the mean time.

Posted by: Art Patscheck at May 12, 2006 02:24 PM

Mark Noonan asked
What do you think the President will say?

I think the President will say that the immigrants will still be around to clean your office, and pick your fruit, and do the stuff you don't want to do, for very cheap. He'll also say that they can't stay.

What do you think he should say?

That our guest workers should get three-fifths of a vote while they are in the states. Just kidding. I think our "immigration problem" is modern day slavery. We should pay everyone who works in the states the min wage, or don't hire them. If we are not going to let immigrants work in the US, thats fine, but the ones who are here, working for slave wages and no benfits should get to become citizens. It's not amnesty, it's suffrage for slavery.

Time for him to put the military on the borders. Actually, it was time about 20 years ago.

Posted by: Warriornation [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 12, 2006 06:34 PM

What I'd like President Bush to say is, "We are going to create a path to legalization for the 11 million illegal immigrants, and close the borders immediately by deploying the National Guard on both the southern and northern borders. To offset the legalization of 11 million illegals, we are going to deport 22 million liberals, along with former presidents Clinton and Carter, who insist on publicly criticizing me, a sitting President, during a time of war. And if Kennedy, Reid, Schumer, Pelosi, and Durbin don't STFU soon, they're outta here too!

Why 22 million, you ask? Because each illegal does the work of two liberals. Hell, we ought to make it a three-for-one swap, and get rid of some liberals who sit around and collect unemployment, welfare, or disability. They're a cancer on society, and they should all go.

May God continue to bless America...and Halliburton!!!"

Continue to smash the enemy, bash the Demorats, the illegals - export them to Mehico, amd continue the NSA Surveillance, especially since the WP/ABC is "shocked" about their poll.

On The Big Story, John Gibson urged viewers to "[d]o your duty. Make more babies," because he had found out, from a recently released report, that nearly half of all children under the age of five in the United States are minorities. Gibson added: "You know what that means? Twenty-five years and the majority of the population is Hispanic." Gibson later repeated: "To put it bluntly, we need more babies."

This bigot is one of yours right? Does he mean white babies?

Typical of your kind.

Maroons.

dbogdan you said...

It is, prima facia, Un-American to suggest that we engage is such jackbooted tactics.

Explain please, you present this as a prima facie argument and it doesn't make a lick of sense to me. Why is it "on it's face" un-American to remove people who are manifestly not citizens from a country they entered illegally?

How is enforcing the law "jackbooted?" Would it be "jackbooted" to say, arrest repeat traffic offenders, would that be "jackbooted" sir?

How about document fraud? tax evasion? driving without a license or insurance? Using public services to which you are not entitled? These are the tip of the iceberg of subsidiary crimes illegals commit to remain in this country.

May I break these laws with no punishment?

Again, explain, because I think you might be mad.

Yes hard as it is to believe conservative, baccy chewing, Bush voting, Nascar watching, oil changing in the front yard, Commie hating, good ole boys. Food stamps. Welfare. The whole nine yards!

So sitting on their bum collecting freebies ain't confined to wingers.

If you want to know what Bush will say, just dig up the old footage from the past 2 months. He won't say anything new. He's just drawing valuable sweeps week time away from the major networks to play a broken record. Personally, I'd rather watch reality tv.

The decider in chief will continue to push his unpopular plans that do not have the best interests of the American citizens in mind. Have you all forgotten about his past plans that were what's "best for America"?...

1. Privatizing social security
2. Nomination of Harriet Miers
3. UAE ports takeover
4. War in Iraq
5. Cutting taxes on wealthy
6. Increased federal spending
7. Underfunding no child left behind
8. "Brownie is doing a heck of a job"
etc
etc
etc

If 9/11 had never happened, Bugs Bunny would have gotten more votes than Bush in 2004. In 2004, I told people that I half hoped that Bush would win because it would take another 4 years to realize what a moron he is. In the same way, I half hope the Republicans win this year. In 2 more years, people will finally be ready for some real change.

By the way, how's the "strong economy" doing these days??? Dow is sliding, inflation is rising, interest rates are rising, housing market is fizzling, consumer confidence is dropping, retail is dropping, and oil prices are rising. Is everyone ready to hunker down for another republican-induced recession???

In doing a quick google search for "Operation Wetback," I am, indeed, repudiating President Eisenhower for the operation in question. I do, indeed, feel that the TACTICS were heavyhanded and unwarranted. However, I am NOT calling the President a Nazi. Had I been alive at the time, I most probably would have been counted among those who protested the actions of the Administration. However, I was not even a twinkle in my Daddy's eyes at the time, and therefore, feel unqualified to critique the measures adopted toward implementation of the program. However, from what I gather, the program was short-lived, and due to public disapproval, was discontinued in short order.
