Iraqi Army Is Improving

According to retired Gen. Barry McCaffery, the Iraqi Army is improving.

The new Iraqi army is "real, growing and willing to fight," but lacks basic equipment and will need up to five more years before it can wage war without U.S. military help, says a new report by a retired four-star general who toured Iraq in April. […] The assessment from Gen. McCaffrey – a Vietnam combat veteran, division commander in Desert Storm and President Clinton's counterdrug czar – is more evidence that Iraq's 250,000-strong security force, which includes the army, is much improved compared with 18 months ago. … "This is simply a brilliant success story," Gen. McCaffrey writes.

Probably won't be reported by the MSM. It's good news.

The MSM hates our President, and rejoices when they are able to bring his poll numbers down. But here in Texas, we understand patriotism means absolute loyalty to our commander-in-chief without question. I know President Bush has our best interests at heart, and that we should believe in him, and not let the New York Times inject their liberal bias into news about Iraq. When our president says mission accomplished, in Texas, we believe it!

Matt, if you don't work for the Bush administration, you should. You have demonstrated absolute mastery of cherry picking and spin. I recommend that all should actually go read the article it in it's entirety (not just the good parts). It's a fairly grim assessment of the present state in Iraq and what we may see in the future. At least 10 more years!

Anyone who watched the spectcle of newly minted Iraq troops removing their uniforms at their graduation, because they didn't want to be posted away from their homes, just had to be impressed with this awesome fighting force.

General McCaffrey began his military career as a 17-year old Cadet at West Point. He served four combat tours: Dominican Republic, Vietnam (twice), and Iraq. When he retired from active duty, he was the most highly decorated and the youngest four star general in the U.S. Army. He twice received the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation's second highest award for valor. He also received two awards of the Silver star for heroism and three Purple Heart medals for wounds sustained in combat (real medals, for REAL wounds in REAL combat...unlike a certain Senator from Mass). During Operation Desert Storm, he commanded the 24th Infantry Division and led the 200-kilometer "left hook" attack into the Euphrates River Valley.

Gen. Mcafferty served as Drug Czar during the Clinton Administration and he campaigned for Gore. So the MSM is not about to put his views in front of the American Public, since they undermine the leftwing spin.

IN 2005 McCafferty said:

"We must achieve our purpose in both Afghanistan and Iraq of building viable, law-based, nonthreatening states which allow American military withdrawal. There is no reason why we cannot carry out our aim. Failure would be a disaster for U.S. foreign policy and economic interests for the next 20 years. Our troops in the face of danger are now growing worried--will the American people sustain them to achieve victory or ignore their struggles on the frontier of the war on terror?

Now is the time for nonpartisan, collective leadership to support and guide our strategy in the ongoing operations in Southwest Asia. Lack of political will and clarity will surely snatch failure from the impending realization of our objectives if we do not act to support those who have given so much to America's defense."

would that his friends on the left would only listen.

Gosh, just a few weeks ago all these libs wanted us to listen to all the retired Generals. Wait, that's right, that's when they were slamming the administration and Rumsfeld. Now, however, we should ignore this General because he is saying things that they don't want to hear.

I'm shocked.....................really.

*Sighs*

Anyone who thinks things are going to pan out in a year or two are deluded. This is a long term deal no matter how you look at it.

Sure, seeing changes now are nice but we won't be able to understand and fully grasp the overall change for years to come.

Heck, anyone else seen reports from Germany and Japan this long after the war?

Salve,

Thats the way to post a lie and make it seem like truth...why don't you tell the whole story? You know, that this was the first Sunni unit to be formed for the Iraqi army...and thus there is bound to be (a) terrorist infiltrators and (b) a shakedown period as things get worked out.

As it was, it wasn't the whole unit - just some...and I strongly suspect that those troopers wanted to be posted to Fallujah because they were infiltrators hoping to regain control of Fallujah.

I'm shocked.....................really."

I'm with you, NC Cop! This "selective acoustics" on the part of the libs and the drive-by media is astounding. It flies in the face of reality. Hollywood couldn't write this stuff any better.

Thankfully, this forum, and others like it, will help to show the Dems for what they are - political opportunists of the highest magnitude, whoring to the media to gain whatever advantage that they think they can get. Hopefully, every voter this fall will remember this ongoing strategy and vote them even further into irrelevance than they already are...

Exactly dbogdan! It seems the left has no strategy. I equate their strategy with closing your eyes and crossing your fingers, which didn't seem to work too well during the 8 years of the Clinton administration.

Gozer you are right on the money! I worked in Iraq for 14 months and one of our translators told us that if we wanted to solve all the problems in Iraq overnight that we would have to kill everybody over the age of 15. Obviously he was exaggerating to make a point, but the point is that it's going to take years for the country to get on it's feet.

Posted by: NC Cop at May 5, 2006 11:43 AM

Mark:

What happened is a matter of record. You can call it a lie -- amazing, when you consider the lengths that you have gone to to justfy the lies of this administration -- if that helps you sleep better, but IT DID HAPPEN. The incident makes a LIE out of assertions that the Iraqi army is anything like a cohesive force.

That this was "the first Sunni unit" suggests that the idea of an inclusive "unity" fighting force does not exist in Iraq.

I suspect that there are infiltrators throughout the Iraqi military -- but I can't prove it -- any more than you can prove that these troops weren't just angry that they wouldn't be allowed to protect their families and neighborhoods from Shiite militias and death squads.

Exactly who is making stuff up here?

"This is simply a brilliant success story," Gen. McCaffrey writes. Stop it! Stop it already! My sides are hurting from laughing. You guys kill me.
Maroons.
