steve, are you volunteering your town, maybe even your neighborhood, as a location in which to hold Mustafa? Because I'm sure the feds would love to be able to find some nice domestic locale for him---somewhere close, and convenient.
After all, there would be no danger to anyone in charge of him, so there would be no reason not to put him in your county jail and then publish his location. I'll bet plenty of locals would line up for the chance at a good job guarding him (the economy being in the tank and all) and there would be no danger in being known as a guard at Mustafa's jail.
Or would you rather he be kept somewhere ELSE, in someone else's neighborhood? Because on second thought, having him within a few blocks of you, or having your brother work at the prison, might just make your life a little too----edgy. You know, with the potential for retaliation, having locals held hostage for Mustafa's release, and all that other good stuff we could expect from his buddies. So pick a neighborhood, any neighborhood, that would satisfy YOUR need for total disclosure, and we'll ask them what THEY think.
Tell you what, steve---let's put him in some other neighborhood and let you just sit on his jury---you being so eager to put him on trial and all. No downside to that, is there, steve. Let's give him a nice big public trial, with the names and addresses of the jurors in the papers. It's not like the judge and jury at that trial would be in any danger, is there, steve? And of course, he really SHOULD be treated like a common garden variety criminal, shouldn't he, steve----because there is no real difference between someone who plots to kill all of your countrymen and overthrow your government and someone who robs the nearest 7-11.
This is why the country is so terrified of letting the libs run things. Remember, it was this idea that terrorist killers had to be treated the same as ordinary criminals that made Bill pass on his chances to take in Osama.

I can't believe what i am reading in these comments except for the last one was good. My son is a soldier and I feel some conservatives the way they are acting lately and these people on the jury have sold this country out. What happened to do is what President Bush has said along. If we don;t stick together a fight is what he said we would look weak and the jury just proved him right. I guess it will take 20 more terrorist attacks to get this country to wake up. President Bush tried do the right thing for this country by protecting it but what does he get for nothing is the answer but slandered all the time. THis country sickens me and you guys will get what you deserve because we let the news media, democrats and some coward conservatives let us lose. The people who will lose is the soldiers fightening for our freedom and this country. Not wanting to fight back is stepping on the graves of the Americans who died. How sad this country has become. I lived during the Vietnam days and I saw the same thing happened but the only difference is we are not fighting countries we are fighting dangerous people who cut heads off. THis country is in grave danger if we don;t finish what we started and now we have Iran also giving us trouble. It seems if a president does nothing to save the country he is looked up to but someone who wants to fight for this country he is smeared and slandered. There are 48,000 documents that President Bush was telling the truth about Saddam all long. Go to Weekly Standard and look up stories by Stephen Hayes and put in A google search look for Frank Gaffney and he has stories about the documents to. Good luck America you are going to need alot of help because we look weak and the guy they just put in jail today and not death said we were the losers today and i guess people think he is right.

Posted by: Warriornation at May 3, 2006 09:19 PM
OK, Ash, if you aren't comfortable with terrorists kept within two hours of where you live, you can imagine what it would be like if we openly housed international terrorists in current prisons. No one in town would be safe. While ordinary criminals don't have groups eager to take whole towns hostage for the return of one of their own, or to wipe out a whole town for hosting one of their own, terrorist have a different way of looking at things.
The best way to keep us safe is to keep those we catch hidden away. We should not say where they are or if they are alive or dead. They should just disappear.
I said the same thing about the families of suicide bombers---if we can identify the bomber, his or her family should just disappear. I would not care if they were learning to jet-ski in Cancun, just so no one knew where they went.
We have to stop thinking of these people as criminals. We have to stop trying to apply codes of behavior to them that simply have no relevance to what they do. They have created an entirely new method of trying to achieve their ends, and if we don't keep up, they will win. It's that simple.
Posted by: Almiranta at May 3, 2006 10:36 PM
Ash, do you think that when we catch, say, Number 3 in an organization, they just leave a blank there, and the hierarchy now goes 1, 2, 4, 5?
Or maybe 4 moves up and becomes 3, and 5 gets promoted to 4.
Or maybe someone new is brought in to replace 3.
Golly, we could keep catching Number 3s indefinitely, and after a while there might only be a Number 1 and a Number 2.
Posted by: Almiranta at May 3, 2006 10:40 PM

9-11 was a horrific day for America and it knocked you to your very soul. Knowing the number one country on earth could be attacked on its own soil is alarming and you sound scared.
That is understandable; but it should not blind you to the fact that your current leadership is incompetent and is not looking out for your best interest. There is no shame in questioning the policies of the Bush administration. In fact, it is your duty, if you love your country.

No matter what "number" they catch...1, 14, 18, 48, 94, 4879, 21989...I am GLAD they caught a terrorist. Anyone who was more concerned about defeating the terrorists than gaining political points would have the same opinion. It sickens me to see the sarcasm and disrespect for those who are doing the fighting and capturing of people who want ALL of us dead, no matter what our political persuation is.

"I agree Mark, and we don't make him any kind of martyr."
Surely you must share my frustration that we continue to capture Number Two's. In my opinion it is great that we caught someone, but it also seems there is an infinite number of number two's.
And leave my ilk out of it. They are fine, hardworking folk, especially my cousins on my mothers side.

And if we undermine our own country enough, surely our enemies will recognize what great patriotic americans we are, right? I mean, showing all the terrorists that Americans dont have the guts to fight will make them like us again, right?

There is work to be done on the home front; every time another of these monsters are captured or dispatched to the hereafter, we should remind everyone why we fight, and thank God everyday for people like you and your son.
Posted by: Bane of Liberals' Existence at May 4, 2006 12:37 PM
Georgia Frawg, that's why fighting a WAR against terrorists, death cult members, must include the aim to stopper the flow of human bombs alltogether. This means major changes in the status quo.
That is the way to defend America from the Islamofascist threat in the long-term. For terrorists WMD is a first-strike weapon not a deterrant. We're talking about people who don't hesitate to brainwash their own kids and turn them into suicidal bomb-strapped jihadis. I recently read an article in which I found out the way that Iran sent kids as mine-clearing devices by the thousands during the Iran-Iraq war.
Killing terrorists is not enough, reducing their sphere of influence is vital to the survival of civilization and to human progress. Everytime a top-level al Qaeda strategist is killed the organization it loses its ability to plan attacks and has to find someone else to trust.
You obviously have a right to express hopelessness, I do not begrudge that, I sympathise with anyone who feels that way. But you know, things have to get done and that is more than navel-gazing.
The fact that fighting a war requires persistence and perseverance is not an argument against eliminating threats to the innocent and defending civilization. That's obvious, but not if you mistakenly rely on the lib media to find out what is going on in the world.
If you depend on the lib media for "news" then you will learn that Islamofascism is not a serious threat and we are not in a real war, Joe Wilson is a truth teller, Rush Limbaugh was "arrested", Republicans are going to lose the next elections (again), and allowing Zacarias Moussaoui to live was a "good" thing. Who are these people telling us these things? The shameless lieberals will not repent for their twisted behavior but those that are mislead by them sure will if their conscience survives the corrupting ideology which is at the root of all this nonsense. It is why we even have to have such a discussion. People are taking note. After Islamofascism is defeated the backbiters and backstabbers will be exposed. And their betrayal during the Cold War has not been forgotten.
Posted by: Sirc_Valence at May 4, 2006 01:05 PM
Leadership vacuum, that arguement is non-sense...no organization can be nearly as effective with too much turnover. Training will be worthless, routing of funds will be more susceptable to theft...UBL will probably respond back to a phishing notice that his ebay account will be closed without submitting his account number! :)
And concern about kidnappings in Colorado for release of prisoners is nearly zip probability. Once someone in their line has been compromised...they are not dying to retrieve people who've had the chance to talk to outsiders. Only the most visible types, like UBL b/c who're perceived as spiritual leaders at best...and he will likely see the end of a neusse on a tree limb, no secret prison for him.
Posted by: ToTheContrary at May 4, 2006 02:28 PM
Sirc,
I never said that perseverance wasn't necessary, that we weren't at war, or that reducing the terrorists' was not vital. I just said that we have captured at least a dozen "high value Al Qaeda operatives", many of which having the same titles as ones already captured.
It's not a matter of capturing one person (but OBL would be nice) or even capturing a dozen people for that matter.
Winning the hearts and minds is key, and we are losing the Propaganda War.

Didn't mean to ignore you Alms, just missed your post. You present the perfect argument why claims of catching number two or high ranking is a bogus and transparent tactic. At the rate we capture them how many decades will it take to catch all of them. By then the children of all the number twos will be grown up and ready to assume leadership. This actually points out the futility of the way we are going about it.

Posted by: NC Cop at May 4, 2006 06:46 PM
"Top level Al Qaeda officials are a dime a dozen." Frawg
You couldn't be more wrong. The ALQueda networkd is a series of cells built upon trust and connections. Trust is established only over a long time. Once those cirlces of trust are broken, its easier to infiltrate the networks.
It requires coordination and financing to mount an attack like the one on 9/11. You leftists think that it must be luck that we haven't been attacked again on our soil.
Its not luck, its the persistance and perseverance of the brave men and women who are prosecuting this war on terrorism around the world. There won't be any major battle to end it all. But there will be thousands of victories such as this one which will eventually weaken the organization to the point of ineffectiveness.
In the meantime, there is a tree of democracy that has been planted in the middle east. That's the only way we are going to win the "hearts and minds" as you say. Once people are given the opportunity to prosper economically, live their lives and raise their families in freedom, and determine their own democratic governments, the interest in terrorism will wane for the vast majority of people.
Will there still be terrorists, of course, but their ability to finance and coordinate large scale attacks will cease, as more and more of the number 1-10 are brought to justice.
How would you suggest we win their hearts and minds...by converting to Islam?

Canadian Observer
Thanks for your observation. I appreciate your assumption that the United States is the number one country on earth. At least I think I do, however to assume the United States is "the number one country on earth" is a bit presumptious. Russia, China, and the United states are probably the three most powerful countries on earth. Russia, China, and the United States are virtually equal in world power. Each of the three countries possess different strengths and weaknesses. So with all due respect to assume the US is number one may not be correct. This is by no means certain. However if one automatically assumes the US is in fact "number one" or a "hyperpower" as some in the media have claimed it makes it much easier to vilify the country.
The problem with concluding Bush and his administration are "incompetent" is it implies that defeating this enemy is somehow easy. This enemy wants to "slay the unbelievers where ever you find them," "burn the roots of the anglo-saxon civilization," bring "death to America", "death to Israel," "and "wipe Israel off the map." Furthermore, the Islamic Extremist terrorists are closely allied with Russia and China. This along with their vast oil wealth make them a very formidable enemy that is fully capable of defeating the United States and its allies. As someone pointed out they want to enslave us. This is true and they are fully capable of doing this. The enemy has to be taken seriously.
As for whether the Bush adminstration is looking out for our best interests, I can't say for certain. I do not think it was not in our best interests to leave Saddam in power. The sanctions keeping him in check were not sustainable over the long term, as concluded by the Iraq Survey Group. Because of this Charles Duelfer and David Kay former heads of the Iraq Survey Group supported the decison to remove the former Iraqi dictator. Whether or not this was the best approach to defeating Islamic Extremists terrorists is debateable. Perhaps Saddam could have been contained another way. There is a substantial body of evidence to support the positon the US government took when the choice to invade Iraq was made. The maain stream media has largely suppressed or downplayed this evidence in favor of "Bush lied" diatribes. It seems rather obvious to me that the main stream media is not looking out for our best interests. It seems unethical to me to ignore or downplay evidence just because it does not fit with their anti-Bush and anti-Republican world view.
You are quite right their is no shame in questioning the policies of the Bush administration. This is our duty as Americans to question our leaders. I hope Canadians question their leaders, as well. We question our leaders all the time. For example Bush is taking heat right now for his failure to secure the borders and for the out of control spending that is currently going on. He should take heat for these things.
Btw, the greatest threats to America and the free world do not come from Islamic Extremists but from Russia and China, in that order. I find it interesting that Russia and China are allied with many of the terrorist supporting states. Whille the threat posed by Islamic Extremists is not as great as that posed by Russia and China, they are capable of defeating the Unitd States and they should be treated as such. Right now their targets are primarily America and Israel. If they should succeed in bending these two countries to their will, they have made it quite clear from their writings and speeches that others will be targeted next. There next full time targets would likely be Western Europe, or so it seems to me. I would suggest taking the thteat seriously.
None of what I have written is meant to imply that I think GW Bush is a good president or that the war in Iraq was strategically a good decision. A strong case could be made against the war in Ira1. Personally I would prefer a president who would take border security more seriously, who would act decisively to cut government spending, and end the well fare state.

Congratulations Ash!
Your half-hearted, half-baked attempt at a rational response to a legitimate question about how YOU plan on fighting al Qaeda was almost impressive... except you gave up before you started, and - true to form - changed the subject in a pathetic attempt to dodge the issue. I was almost interested in hearing about how you proposed to "a) Shore up our national security. Some real airport security, real border security." except that's the most you could offer - as if no one in the U.S. has been making any effort toward that objective!
"Oh well I did have some good ideas." was the best you could re-assert in your followup posting?
Let's hear it for Ash and his master plan to Secure the Airports, Secure the Borders, and shore up our National Security. It seemed awfully comprehensive to me. How about anyone else?
Does anyone want to write Ash's name in for President this coming election? He seems just like the guy we need in these troubling times... what with all that specificity and all...
Posted by: dbogdan at May 5, 2006 01:20 AM
Ash originally stated,
"Not cool, guys. I live about 2 hours from Florence Colorado where they are going to put him! Yikes."
At first blush, it appeared to me that Ash was advocating for those "secret prison sites" to keep this creep in, instead of a mere 2 hours from where Ash lives. Unlike Ash and his coherts, I continued to read the following posts and found that, substantively, he doesn't have a problem with keeping that prison open for the likes of "what's-his-name" Massaoui. By his own admission, however, Ash tends to postulate his position(s) based upon the exigency of the moment. He later apologized (sort of) by explaining that he was REALLY trying to be sort of humorous. I guess he read his posting and realized the inherent nonsense of the original post.
That's the trouble with these libs. They are quick to pontificate their position. But then, when they realize that - gasp - WORDS MEAN SOMETHING, they are quick to backtrack or equivocate about what they REALLY MEANT by their original words. It's convenient for them that they are able to change gears in mid-stream. Otherwise, people might begin to think that they actually MEANT what they said in post "A" as opposed to post "B." This way, there's wiggle room. One could always come back with a statement to the effect that they were "misunderstood" or that they really meant for their comments to be humorous... Or, if they stick their fingers in the air and realize the wind is blowing such-and-such a way, they can always go back to the original talking point. If not, they can change the subject - again.
WORDS MEAN SOMETHING! They stand on their own long after the dust has settled. You might want to consider that concept the next time you fire up your keyboard to pound out your latest, greatest, newest and most improved "concept" for the masses... before you change it on the fly once you realize how ignorant it sounds...

What does your plan do to protect attacks against our embassies, our troops, or other Americans around the globe. Unless, of course, your plan is to haul all Americans inside the borders and never let them leave.
What are your plans for rogue and hostile nations like Iran acquiring nuclear weapons?
What are your plans for terrorist nations who plot, finance, or otherwise assist terrorists?
"Shore up national security"......brilliant.

"It's over man accept it and bring our boys home."
- Ash
As much as I would like to bring our boys and gals home, we can't. They are to busy fighting terrorists and loyalists of the former Iraqi government who are allied with the terrorists and were allied with the terrorists even before the war in Iraq started. I suppose we could bring the troops home and fight the terrorists here in America.
I agree with you on border security and airport security. I think we can do a better job here. Personally I don't think Bush is a very good president. Hopefully we can do better. I think we need some new strategies to win the war. Right now it seems the US and the Jihadi forces have fought to a stalemate on the Iraqi front. This is not surprising to me. The enemy is very formidable. Decisive action will need to be taken to break the stalemate. An American withdrawl from Iraq right now would be decisive action that would favor the terrorists.

Thanks dude. I wish you would have read my post a little bit more grown up like. I said the first step (which implies there were other steps to follow) was to shore up our port security. But since you have a problem with that idea, I assume you think things are just fine, so I won't bother with my other points.
I would add that if you don't want someone to prepare to fight you, it might be a good idea not to send covert troops into their country in an attempt to find good places to bomb. That is an act of aggression and frankly I can't see any reason to bawl about them attempting to defend themselves.
If you were scoping out my house to attack me, don't you think I have the right to take steps to defend myself?

Do you suppose bush will ever put this guy on trial or will he be sent to some secret location, never to be heard from again. like all the rest of these "big catches"? Peace
Al Qaeda is on its last legs. Hell, even Zarqawi supposedly came out on video to "rally the cause."
We have all but defeated them.
steve, are you volunteering your town, maybe even your neighborhood, as a location in which to hold Mustafa?
Do you suppose bush will ever put this guy on trial or will he be sent to some secret location, never to be heard from again. like all the rest of these "big catches"? Peace
They already did, dumbass. They wanted to put him up in your bedroom, but your mommy and daddy said no...
Am I in the movie Groundhog Day? Didn't I read just yesterday they caught the number 2 (fill in the blank.)
steve, are you volunteering your town, maybe even your neighborhood, as a location in which to hold Mustafa?
Not cool, guys. I live about 2 hours from Florence Colorado where they are going to put him! Yikes.
Steve, if you'd have read the link Matt provided, you'd have known that this occurred last November, and that the terrorist was taken to an undisclosed location.
You need to stay informed. Piece of pie...
Ash
Only you and gloom and doom party would get down on these captures, but nothing is surprising from the ilk that had Bin Laden handed to them on a silver platter and they let him go.
Erin
Agreed Almiranta. What would you estimate their membership at? A couple of thousand? And we've captured/killed what, bout 200 max? wait, there were some sporatic Al qaeda in afghanistan, lets give you 300. Only 67 more years to go! I can FEEL that security washing over me!
I am suprised that howard dean, nancy pelosi and harry reid have not demanded to see a copy of the arrest warrant, issued by a judge, authorizing the arrest.
alms,alms,alms.....
It bothers me not the least that he is being held there. Really. I think there are already a lot of notables there already. Isn't Reed the shoebomber one?
I was trying to be funny. Yikes is a cartoon expression. and not cool came from that stupid commericaial with cavemen in it. I know they have to be kept somewhere and this facility in Florence is a super high security one. It's two hours away, but might as well be a world away. It's pretty desolate out there. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
Hey warman,
I say enough controversial things on this site to get me into trouble. Don't misread me when I am agreeing with you. (See my comments on the penalty of Zarkowi).
Erin, if you are still out there, please thank your son & family for their sacrifices! They are not taken lightly or for granted!
That being said, could you clarify for us which remarks were not to your liking? Seriously, aside from two of the posters, most of the people posting here greatly support our president in the war on terror! He has been a true leader doing what is right in the face of being unpopular! To me, he is a hero & a gentleman, and I know alot of the people on this site share my sentiment! If you have been offended by what you have read please clarify what it is that has offended you so we can explain our stances. God Bless you and yours!
The sheepeople that post regularly on this site are quite mad. My goodness when will you all stop supporting a mere man and start supporting our country. Does any that posts here regularly even remember that Jim Jones followers drank the kool-aid supporting his views, not those of the religion he preached. Wake up, what will it take to wake you up? Start supporting the U.S. and not the man who is leading us into oblivion. May all thats good have mercy on your souls.
I love all this "protest is patriotism" stuff, dont you? I mean, if we curse at our soldiers and our commander in chief long enough, surely things will turn out better, right? And if we undermine our own country enough, surely our enemies will recognize what great patriotic americans we are, right? I mean, showing all the terrorists that Americans dont have the guts to fight will make them like us again, right?
Liberals are just hopelessly naive about the intentions and capabilities of our enemies. You'd really rather see America lose than see Bush win, wouldnt you?
I trust liberals about as far as i can throw 'em.
It's you traitorous libs drinking the kool-aid and perverting the truth all the time.
When will you people stop attacking your own country and attacking the president and open your eyes to the threat posed by the suicidal fascists that America is at war with?
It is you degenerate losers reducing all of this to a mere man.
Raker your a friggin idiot, just like the rest of your pals! I have evidence & proof that you guys are friggin idiots!!! YOU CENTER EVERY CONSPIRACY THEORY YOU TOUT AROUND A MAN, ONE SINGLE HUMAN BEING! Like he's some kind of God that hold the life of our very beings in his pinky finger! That is how we know raker is a friggin moron! Go smoke some more dope and bag on Limbaugh raker, leave the debate to the sane! Oh ya, and keep tellin yourself that you support the U.S., the guys in uniform aren't fooled by you!
I've said it before, and I'll say it again:
Erin,
Thank you for your son’s service and for the sacrifices you and your family face daily. May God bless and keep you all safe from harm.
Pay no attention to the Canadian nit-wit; I know your son is fighting a just and noble cause; America thanks him, the Iraqis thank him and the world is a better place because patriots like your son answer when duty calls.
There is work to be done on the home front; every time another of these monsters are captured or dispatched to the hereafter, we should remind everyone why we fight, and thank God everyday for people like you and your son.
Sirc,
I never said that perseverance wasn't necessary, that we weren't at war, or that reducing the terrorists' was not vital.
I hope everyone got to see Rummy get punk'd by Ray McGovern. Man McGovern has the cajones our journalists need! Caught him in a big whopper of a lie. I've seen a link on HufPo is you missed it!
Golly, we could keep catching Number 3s indefinitely, and after a while there might only be a Number 1 and a Number 2.
It's you traitorous libs drinking the kool-aid and perverting the truth all the time
Sirc, You might most benefit from seeing Rummy lie through his teeth. (HufPo has the link) If liberals are drinking kool-aid this bufoon must be drinking warm, year old Mogan-David wine.
Well, Ash, by all means, please tell us how to do it. What is your exact plan for fighting Al Qaeda? I'd love to hear it.
I'll give this to you in small steps.
a) Shore up our national security. Some real airport security, real border security.
"Well, Ash, by all means, please tell us how to do it. What is your exact plan for fighting Al Qaeda? I'd love to hear it"
Well NC Cop it seems a mute point. Mark Noonan has declared Mission Accomplished on another thread. Oh well I did have some good ideas.
"...and we are losing the Propaganda War."
Please tell us, Frawg, what are you and other liberals doing to WIN the propaganda war? (I mean, OTHER than surrendering???)
Yes, dbogdan, wasn't that a wonderful plan for fighting terrorism!!
LOL!!! And they wonder why they can't win any elections!!!
The only thing that the Defeatocrats have proposed basically boils down to:
"...bring the troops home for Iraq and HOPE that everything goes well."
News Flash; HOPE IS NOT A STRATEGY!
Their approach to the terrorists comes from the Rodney King School of international relations:
"Can't we all just get along??"
Thank God they are not in power. Heaven help us if they ever get power.
Well NC Cop it seems a mute point. Mark Noonan has declared Mission Accomplished on another thread. Oh well I did have some good ideas.
It's over man. Accept it and bring our boys home.
Ash
BTW nccop:
What's wrong with this:
1) Shore up our national security. Some real airport security, real border security.
And they wonder why they can't win any elections!!!
See me november 5th, nc cop
Still waiting for that comprehensive and detailed plan of yours, Ash...
Or are you and maf53 still busily engaged in changing the subject and avoiding substantive debate?
Don't worry Ash, I'll be here, will you? As for your plan? It smacks of isolationism, which as I recall didn't do too well leading up to WW II.
"Shore up national security"......brilliant.
Sorry B. Poster my comment directly above was for NCCOP, not you. I guess I was being optimistic wanting to bring the troops home. You make sense with your statement. I hope we can come up with a better strategy too. One that will work.
