Open Thread: Illegal Immigration Demonstrations

It'll probably be a couple weeks before we know the affect, if any, of the demonstrations in favor of illegal immigration today. It will, however, be a major topic of discussion today, so here's the thread for you to put your two cents in - as long as it is in any way, shape or form related to immigration, have at it.

UPDATE: Can't link right now, but NRO's The Corner is opining that the boycott is a bit of a fizzle; Citizen Smash tends to confirm this but notes that the boycott seems strongest right along the border.

Anyone have any other info on turnout? It is exceeding expectations? Falling short? What?

those of us with jobs that are responsible Americans will be missing their rallies...

They should extend their boycott for another month, then they could more clearly see how completely expendable they are. This could even force the greedy US companies to pay a living wage and hire Americans. The labor market is like water . . . it will quickly find its own level and the ripples will quickly vanish.

Maybe we should boycott hiring illegals for a year or two...or three...

Posted by: Parker [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 1, 2006 01:42 PM

Pat Buchannan is right - this is an extortion attempt. The significance of a May Day demonstration should not be lost on anyone

Funny... they shouldnt be here yet they are boycotting.... Start up the mass deportation buses, that should end this boycot pretty damn quick...

I think people should take note of the local businesses that are participating in this ridiculous event and return the favor by taking your business elsewhere from here on out.

Posted by: THM at May 1, 2006 02:17 PM

During the Montgomery bus boycott, the people actually had a good reason to protest. But unlike today, they actually had to give something up. Cars were more uncommon, so they had to carpool to work, walk or ride their bikes; and they had to do it for far longer than one day. Ditching work or school for one day isn't making a sacrifice at all; it's merely an excuse.

Posted by: Genghis Shan at May 1, 2006 02:22 PM

I think it is a slap in the face of anyone who has or is a legal immigrant and it includes their descendants. I am a descendant of legal imagrants to it's a slap in my face.

Boycott Mexican made products and Mexican grown produce!

Mexicans want to boycott and harm the very businesses that offer them jobs. In Mexico, they are told to boycott and not purchase American made products, some of which are probably made by those who are providing jobs for their fellow citizens.

All bloggers and readers should start a campaign to boycott all Mexican made items and Mexican grown produce. Ask your friends and family to stop purchasing any Mexican products for the entire month of May!!!

Besides, China can probably make it cheaper and will appreciate the business!!!

Let's hit Mexico in their pocket book.

As of right now, I am not going to buy any items or produce for the rest of this month that I know is made or produced in Mexico!

BOYCOTT MEXICO!!!

Hey Ash,

Guess you missed that whole "as long as it is in any way, shape or form related to immigration, have at it" part. What a shock!!!! It is the liberal way though. When you cannot contribute anything to the converstation, change the subject!!!

Posted by: NC Cop at May 1, 2006 02:42 PM

And, because they are reportedly supporting today's so called "boycatt", let's include Tyson Foods and Gallo Wine in AAR's proposed boycott.

rplat,

Agreed! As well as any other American companies who forget where they reside and who buys their products.

Let illegal immigrants buy their products for a month!!!

Now, we just need to get the word out by e-mails, blogs, word of mouth, or whatever means is available.

Someone want to do an interview on Fox news?

I agree lets boycott mexico, it is a slap in the face to legal immigants that do things the right way, and the these rallys is a good example why they need to go back home they will not be a contributor to the U.S at all they are a nusiance if anything. If they cant come and do what is required of them to do to get in this country leagally they need to be forced to go back to there own country.

Boycott Mexican goods and throw more Mexican's out of work who will head for our borders? The thing to do is to buy Only Mexican products, pump up their economy and then fine and jail any American CEO or business owner who hires an undocumented worker. No job in the USA, but lots of jobs in Mexico because we are all buying Only Mexican. Peace

Got stopped by a police roadblock on my way back to work from lunch. Thought there was a funeral procession, but it was only the march in support of illegal aliens. My first impression was the number of the poor, downtrodden people marching who had cellphones to their ears or were listening to MP3 players.

Posted by: A-10 [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 1, 2006 03:23 PM

As a legal immigrant (my family moved here when I was little), I too think it's a slap in the face. Especially since they are calling this day "A Day Without Immigrants". I don't belong in the same category as "them" (illegals and those who support them).

I passed through downtown L.A. on the way to work this morning - there were fewer people on the freeway and buses (a wonderful consequence of the boycott). Wish traffic was that good all the time.

I did see one leaf-blower guy. Guess he didn't feel like boycotting...

Posted by: Gumisnoopy at May 1, 2006 03:30 PM

It's obvious why the organizers of the Latino boycotts chose May 1st, the Communist high holy day, for the demonstrations. I've heard today called "Stinko de Mayo." Let's call it "Pinko de Mayo."

Posted by: chip at May 1, 2006 03:40 PM

I don't agree with the Cons on this site very often, but they're right - if people are in the country illegally, then they need to go back home & get in line. It is only fair to everyone else.

As for the protests - yikes, can't we get Bearman & his militia to round them all up?

Posted by: maf53 [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 1, 2006 03:43 PM

My ride to work this morning on the freeways was awesome. Fastest commute I've had in months.

Love these protests, keep them going.

:)

Posted by: Warriornation [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 1, 2006 03:56 PM

*Chuckles*

If only they could maf, of only they could. I'm sure Bearman and others like him would love to do just that.

Anyway, as a grandson of immigrants and friend to others (Asia) I've always been against illegal immigration. Let alone there's the simple fact that the word "illegal" is there which should settle everything. I hate how the folks involved in this "protest" keep saying it's all about immigrants. I call BS because immigrants aren't having or causing the problems, it's illegals that are, and the more they sidestep that fact the farther from the problem they get.

Again what we need to do is simple, yet I doubt it'll get done.

1. We need to revamp the immigration laws and process. Make it so it's easier to understand and go through. Let folks know how to immigrate legally and fix some of the wierd problems in the system.
2. Protect the border. Even if it's no more than a speed bump, stoping even 25% of those trying to enter illegally is better then none. This includes our ports and norther boarder since not all illegals are Mexicans.
3. Prosecute those who KNOWINGLY hire illegals. As mentioned before remove the jobs these folks are breaking the law for. Those companies that play by the rules will thank us for actually enforcing the laws and making it more costly to use "cheap" labor. (Especially if it becomes a matter of "when" and not "if" you'll be caught)
4. Make English the official language of the USA. This will decrease costs on printing (minor affect I know) and focus on having folks "assimiliate" into America and not constantly putting up barriers between us. Heck, if not just English then pull a Canada and make English and Spanish the official languages.
5. Allow law enforcement to arrest and forward on any illegals they catch in their normal operations.

There are other things but I think those five would really help. Especially the removal of jobs and the ease of legal immigration.

I agree that we should not open our borders to Mexican immigrants and I am also against temporary worker visas. I think we should let the immigrants already in this country earn citizenship. Various criteria has been offered including a spotless crime record, learning English, having a job. These are debatable and negotiable.

I feel this way because illegals are taking away lots of jobs in this country that Americans want- at a fair wage.

So prepare for higher produce prices. Cut your own grass. And expect to pay $400,000 for that dream home instead of $200,000. Skilled American construction workers won't settle for the $8/ hour wages.

Here and there I pick up the name of a business supporting illegal immigration. Is there a comprehensive listing of all of them available?

Posted by: William Garland at May 1, 2006 04:56 PM

I asked a young Hispanic guy (around 19years old) in my small town this last weekend to please turn down his music. He and his friends were hanging out in the town grocery store parking lot. They had brand new cars and 2 feet by 4 feet speakers in their cars. Their bass was unbelievably loud. They were standing in the way in the driving lane and acted like they friggin' owned the place. When I asked him to turn his music down, he looked at me defiantly and said, "Hey, we're in America. I can do whatever I want!"
This was in Winters, California (between San Francisco and Sacramento).

As for today, the traffic was light in the a.m. Loved it. I drove through downtown Fairfield at around 1 p.m. No sign of anyone or any disruption. No one seems to be talking about it, and I bought American!! All Day!

This is a stupid move on the part of illegals. They are only making people like me, who were sympathetic before, angry and against them.

I already cut my own grass, clean my own toilets, and cook my own food. I did not notice a thing here in the Detroit area. News reported a whopping 300 protestors in downtown Detroit. Big deal! The only people affected by the loss of illegal immigrant jobs are country club liberals.

I've heard that ANSWER is a major supporter of the demonstrations.
And that the radicals are moving to take control of the movement.
So why are you people so blase about this whole thing?
I am a tolerant man, given over to giving people the benefit of the doubt. But this situation is getting scary.
100,000 people marching in the streets, under a foreign flag, would be worrying enough without the nation's army on the other side of the world.
Fighting a war that resulted because another administration did not pay enough attention to a growing movement.
Fool me once, . . .

Hey, Ash PROMISED us he was leaving this blog for good. So much for liberal rhetoric---he must have voted to leave the blog before he voted to stay.

Even though a fence can be breached, it will still slow people down. Spray it every day with that invisible powder they use to catch people dipping into the till and those who do make it over will light up like Christmas trees at the Black Light strip just up the road.

It would be a good military exercise to see how quickly we could get the National Guard down to the border.

Then give everyone who was here by January 1, 2006, 60 days to register---and make being here unregistered a felony. Those who can't afford to have their fingerprints run though the system, due to prior arrests, won't register. Fine. Anyone not registered by the due date goes home, with a felony conviction on his record, and will never be allowed back.

Those who do register can get temporary work visas, if they have clean records and jobs, till they are checked out. Then fine them and give them work visas good for, say, five or six years. After that, they can apply for green cards---if they are still law-abiding, and still have jobs, and CAN SPEAK ENGLISH. But no citizenship, ever, for anyone who entered this country illegally as an adult. If someone is here now and wants citizenship, he can go home and start over there.

Over time, there will be a stigma asociated with not being a citizen. That is good---it makes the statement that citizenship is important, valuable, and available only to those who respect this country.

Posted by: Almiranta [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 1, 2006 07:51 PM

We know we can't fix the problem. All we can do is make it better. Getting all illegals either into the system or firmly established as felons for being out of the system is an improvement. Halting the flow at the border is an improvment. Not letting illegals achieve citizenship is a response to the 'amnesty' objection---they can stay, under certain rather rigid criteria, but they can't get to the head of the line.

BTW, you ought to know that the meat-packing company, Swift, closed all its plants in support of the strikers and marchers. They pretty much depend on illegal labor, even unofficially pointing, with a nudge and wink, toward places where illegals can get papers such as illegal SS numbers. But even so, they could have shut down because of high absenteeism or something, without officially supporting the demonstrations. No more Swift products for me

WASHINGTON (AFP) Immigrants' rights advocates, elated by the resounding success of Monday's "National Day of Action," which drew the backing of hundreds of thousands of protesters across the United States and infinite media coverage, are now planning a national boycott which they hope will have an even greater resonance.
Organizers are planning the May 1 "Great American Boycott," urging illegal immigrants -- who cannot vote and who have only limited political power -- to flex their economic muscle. Protesters are being urged to refrain from shopping, and to stay away from school and work.

You should take a moment to let that sink in.
This is a movement orchestrated by people who entered the US illegally, and who then want to scream about their "rights." WHAT RIGHTS? YOU'RE HERE ILLEGALLY!

Let's take a look at some of the many benefits that illegal aliens have blessed our great country with: Street gangs, graffiti, drugs, skyrocketing healthcare, depreciation of property value, illiteracy. The list could go on. What they actually have to offer (cheap labor) pales to what they have given our country to deal with. I'll take expensive vegetables over expensive healthcare any day!
And now, like terrorists, they are going to attack our economy -- the one entity that makes our nation stand out from all the others: The backbone of our nation. The country they came to like locusts so they could reap the benefits is now the focus of their boycott.

You've seen it on TV: Marching on our American streets waving their Mexican flags, boldly showing that they can be more racist than whom they accuse of, and yet the obvious is totally oblivious to them.

LOOK! IF YOU'VE GOT IT SO BAD HERE, THEN LEAVE!!!

A Day without Immigrants?. Oh my! I didn’t know that the people who live in this country without any legal document(s) are “Immigrants”….so, what am I?. I’ve been waiting in the long line to submit my paperworks to the U.S.Embassy in Thailand. I’ve been answering so many questions at the U.S.Embassy. I’ve been waiting in line (again) after I got in the U.S.A. to apply for my SSN and my Resident card before I can have my I.D. card. I pay tax from my U.S.Dollars income, I’ve never done anything illegal. I’ve had to apply for the U.S.Visa for my parents to come in the U.S. for only 1-2 month visit when my son was born and the U.S.Embassy issued visa for my mother but refused to issue visa for my father!. I’d like to ask the people who called themself “Immigrants” do you have I-94 when you arrive in this country? I bet you don’t and I bet you don’t even know what is it? because “YOU ARE ILLEGAL ALIENS”.

I assume you realize this doesn't help your cause, right? I mean because if there are continuous thundrstorms in San Francisco, that is no help to drought ridden Texas. Texas will still suffer catastrophic events. Even is total rainfall is the same.

Did you read the National Geographic link I sent? Did you read the part about serious coastal flooding as a result of Arctic melting? No amount of growth in Antarctica will solve that problem.

Now now Ash. Remember 66.3% of all statistics are made up. 99.5% of Scientists agree? Yeah right. I doubt 99.5% of all scientists agree the sky is blue. (Some might say it's actually clear but blah blah blah) You get the idea.

Is the globe warming? Possibly.

Is it caused by man? Doubtful.

Do we have an affect? Sure.

Can we stop it? No.

Climate shifts have happened many times in the past, even in recorded human history. We will adapt and go on, or die. Same with everything else.

Besides, what does that have to do with illegals?

Posted by: Gozer [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 1, 2006 09:09 PM

Ash

I believe the earth is slightly warmer today than 40 years ago. Yes, I do believe this.

I also believe that we had several ice ages and came out of those ice ages despite the lack of SUV's and man to do so.

I also believe that Mars is warmer now according to scientists, yet how can this be with no SUV's and humans on Mars?

I also believe that when the earth is estimated to be 4.5 billion years old that decided what course we should take on 36 years of a data ...well...it might be a bit "premature".

What I don't believe is that we can do anything to change this. Earth is a big girl and will go on spinning and spinning. My guess is that she will cool down and warm up once or twice in the next fifty years as well, regardless of what we do as human beings.

I simply said that just because one cap is melting doesn't mean all ice is melting, in fact one cap is growing.

It seems to me in the left's constant drum beat of chicken little "We're all going to die tomorrow" mentality of gloom and doom, they forget that there are other sides to the story or...in this case...the facts.

Kind of like Iraq...it's 100% bad news when you hear it from the left.

Sorry, but I like my facts given the appropriate weight they deserve and not through a liberal filter where I can run around like a crazy man and scream the world is coming to an end (or that we lost 2500 military people but oh, by the way removed Hussein and freed 50,000,000 people).

Are you insane Maf! When & where have I ever condoned breaking the law to make a political point(my mind must have left the premises)! I don't think I've EVER refered to illegal aliens as cannon fodder, you on the other hand........

No, I don't have the answer on how to deal with illegals already in our country, but I'll volunteer to secure our borders from the ever increasing victims coming across to get everything your party will give them!

If I ever start a militia Maf, you'll be the first or the last to know!

It took me 15 minutes to get to work today, when it usually takes an hour. The freeways were wide open and I loved it. They think they are hurting the economy by rallying? HA HA HA. If they were not here, the price of gas would probably drop because the need for it would decrease. The homeless or unemployed would get the jobs that they stole, therefore increasing the employment rate, therefore, increasing the economy. They really are not educated people are they?
I'm all for boycotting anything that has to do with illegal alians. And I'm not just speaking of Mexican. I'm thinking all of them. There are more than just illegal mexicans out there.
There are plenty of car washes out here in California that are not run by mexicans.
Did anyone see the stats today ( and I do not recall where from, heard it on TV ) about hospital occupancy and births given today has dramatically decreased? Crap - should have made my Dr.'s appointment for today.

But I am all for boycotting anything Mexican. Where do I sign up?

"Sorry, but I like my facts given the appropriate weight they deserve and not through a liberal filter"

The article you referenced was written in 2001! And they only said the Antarctic is growing slightly.

Scientists have said:"What's really interesting is that the past three summers (2002, 2003, and 2004) have been characterized by record or near record minimums [of total Arctic sea ice area],"

Listen I realize we may not be able to do anything about it. But we might. So why not err on the side of cleaner air, etc. I never thought of National Geographic as a liberal filter.

Posted by: Ash [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 1, 2006 10:04 PM

Seems like all of the repubs and most of the dems agree that we need to enforce our laws and close our borders, and not bow to extortion from illegals.

So writer your congressmen and tell them how you feel. Get your friends to do the same. Let them know that you are only going to vote for a candidate who supports defending OUR borders, and enforcing OUR LAWS!! regardless of party!!!!

Posted by: phnxbmed at May 1, 2006 10:14 PM

My personal opinion is to:

1. First deploy the National Guard along our southern border to stop the influx of illegals.

2. Next Congress should revise the constitution to limit citizenship birth to only those children born to at least one American Citizen. (This eliminates a big incentive for illegals to cross the border).

2. Next Congress should pass a law permitting all illegal who register within 90 days to recieve TEMPORARY One Year work permit to those who pass a background check and have no felony convictions. These permits can be automatically renewed as long as there are no convictions during that past year and all taxes have been paid and the worker has a valid health insurance policy. At the same time Congress should fund a permanent wall along the Mexican border.

2. After 90 day period ends INS should begin a series of raids on large employers like Tyson Foods and Gallo along with some major hotel chains, and construction firms.

Deport the illegals without documentation and heavily fine the employers. Institute a series of increasing fines for 2nd and 3rd offenses. Undocumented workers deported should be permanently ineligible for entry into this country.

3. Next immigration should start checking papers at airports, train and bus stations, and deporting those who can not properly identify themselves, permanently deny them entry into the US.

4. After this Congress can then debate the provisions for qualifying for green card status and citizenship. If there is a citizenship provision, all temporary workers go to the end of the line behind all of those who have patiently waited using proper procedures.

5. Citizenship should only be granted to those who demonstate a proficiency in English and the history of the United States, with emphasis on the revolutinary war, the constitution and the bill of rights.

Sunanta, Welcome to America!! My grandfather, Alfred Christensen, came here from Denmark when he was 21 years old as a LEGAL IMMIGRANT!! He was happy to become an American. Those protesting today are not immigrants at all -- they are illegal aliens. Again, welcome to America -- the Land of Legal Immigrants!

Demand that Mexico forfit 15% of their land area to compensate the United States for the 12 to 15 million illegals now draining the US economy.

phnx:

I agree with most of what you said, but have a couple of questions:

Do we have enough National Guardsmen freed up to do this? It is a very long border and they have seemed pretty resourceful in finding ways across. Also are we willing to commit them indefinately to this duty?

Ash,

If a few hundred civilians on the border were enough to partially stem the flow 25,000 (10%) armed national guard, strategically placed, could stop it.

Their presence wouldn't be permanent, it would only be until the wall was built. However I would be in favor of having all 2 week training deployments be to bases set up on the border.

Does anyone know how to translate:

"Get your ass out of my country!" into Spanish?

As a former National Guard officer and one who still works for the DoD, I do not support the deployment of the National Guard to the borders. Although you can say that their use on the borders could be part of the Global War on Terror, they are being used for military operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Kosovo, and other locations. I see the logic, but there is a better way.

My full time job is gaining and maintaining employer support for the Guard and Reserve. Adding an additional mission to the Guard and Reserve that takes them away from the place of employment for extended periods will exacerbate the stress we already have with the employer and service member.

A better, and simpler, solution is to use the money you would spend on mobilizing and deploying Guard and Reserve units to the borders to hire additional border guards. The cost is actually less for the same number because you eliminate a great deal of the logistical expenses of transporting, housing, and feeding Reserve Component units.

A-10 Then let's let the regular military do it.
I don't care who let's just do it.

One of the articles was written in 2005. The other in 2001. Get your facts straight.

One cap is melting, the other is growing. Oh those pesky facts

That sounds more reasonable A-10. But I would want to make sure they are well trained because a few hotheads could cause a lot of trouble. Would it still be feasible adding in money for training, etc?

Gracias, Señor Ricorun!!

I would assume that its all part of the hiring procedures for INS border guards. If they used National Guard troops there would still be a train-up period. As I mentioned on another thread, Congress is considering diverting Iraq and Katrina funds to hire additional border guard.

If they want to come here and work good but let them first pull at least four years in the United States Armed Forces to get that right. They will get training, pay, and then have the right to stay. But really I dont think there would be to many fighting to get here.Alas...Problem Solved!

I want to know several things; Why we would forgive a felony like identify theft by illegal aliens, why we would then allow them to maintain the social security proceeds which they obtained through fraud and theft, do we really expect that by raising the quota of low-skilled worker visas ("guest-worker program") that this will stop the many, many more foreigners who will try to come illegally to this country (surely we are not niave enough to believe that because they don't qualify or get a "guest worker visa" they won't attempt to still come in, and finally, what will we then do with the millions more who WILL COME illegally over the next decade, grant them amnesty too?
