The Associated Press reports the story
In a show of support for Iraq's emerging government, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld arrived in the capital unannounced Wednesday for meetings with Prime Minister-designate Jawad al-Maliki and other newly selected leaders.
Rumsfeld, who flew overnight from Washington after a private meeting on Capitol Hill with a group of Republican senators also was holding talks here with Gen. George Casey, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, and other senior commanders to discuss progress on the military front.
Rumsfeld was expected to not only congratulate the Iraqis on breaking a deadlock over selection of a prime minister and other top political positions, but also to reinforce the Bush administration's message that the Iraqis should not expect U.S. forces to remain indefinitely.

Wonder how many of these Bush bashing critics are making visits to Baghdad.
If they dont go there, they may as well shut up!

Big Red
If anyone should go to Baghdad, it should be Rumsfeld. Isn't that his job?
He should be there with the troops so he can witness their peril.

Hey Big Red when are you signing up for that generational committment to Iraq Condi spoke about? The US Army needs big strapping patriots such as man yourself as IED fodder so Rummy can sneak into the greenzone periodically to lecture the Iraqis about democracy. You do afterall support the President and his war of choice. Don't leave the fight to poor and middle class kids who need college money. Put your ideology along with your butt on the line. As you say if you don't go there yourself you might as well shut up.

Mark Garrity profferred,
"...As you say if you don't go there yourself you might as well shut up."
In case you've forgotten (or don't care), our Armed Forces are comprised of volunteers. No one has forced them into conscription. Not all of them need college money. Not all of them want to go to college. Not all of them are poor and middle class kids. They are each and every one of them over the age of 18. That makes them young adults. They are a group of well-trained professionals, doing their job to the best of their abilities. To paint them otherwise is an unmitigated insult of the highest magnitude. They have choices. They make them.
News Flash! Some of these young adults believe in what they're fighting for. And believe it or not, they are fighting for the rights of people like you to utter the stupidity and ignorance that so blithely rolls off your lips. That you don't support the troops is clear by your brief display of sarcasm. So why belittle those who do? Have you no shame?
Since you are so gung-ho about putting your "ideology along with your butt on the line," I suggest that you travel to Afghanistan or Iraq and join the resistance (read that, "terrorists"). That way, our brave troops - or as you would have it those "poor and middle class kids" - can get a clear shot at you. As it stands now, you stay here stateside, braying your "patriotic dissent" for anyone to hear, hiding behind the safety of this nation which is secured by the willing sacrifices of the troops that you besmirch...

I think Rummy goes to Iraq to get comfort and to remind of the BIG PICTURE. He's great and even if he wasn't for him to be replaced at a time like now would be so bad in our efforts on this war on terrorism.

When you say "some of these young adults believe in what they're fighting for" don't you mean "all" since they volunteered? Why would they volunteer if they didn't believe in what they were fighting for?

dbogdan - sadly those troops are paying the ultimate sacrifice for an unnecessary war. what an effing shame and what an effing disaster. and traveling to iraq or afghanistan? hell, its unsafe for any american to travel anywhere now thanks to the bush doctrine. world loves us! yeah - thanks, thanks for making me a target!

I'm amazed at all the individuals who think that W. started the acts of terrorism under which we now all live. This is a fight that was brought to us back in the 90's and one that other parts of the world have been fighting longer than the US. I worked in Germany in the early '80's and have memories in all airports of security patrolling with shouldered Uzis. So to say that this is our President's fault is just plain uninformed.
