Buy America Back!

Listening to talk radio today on the way home from a business trip, I hear Mike McConnell talking to Mark Christopher about a great ideal to counter the Latino May 1st economic boycott in the U.S.

We need to do 2 things: #1. Take note of which businesses suffer without their illegal labor and boycott them from May 1st forward.

#2. ( and most important ) BUY BUY BUY!
Prove to our politicians who really is the life blood of our economy. If you are planning to buy anything in the near future, buy it on May 1st! It doesn’t matter if it’s a big ticket item like a car, computer or big screen TV, or a even a tube of toothpaste, buy it on May 1st. Let’s make May 1st an even bigger shopping day than the day after Thanksgiving.

Even the Mexican government is concerned about the results. So much so, that they are now involved. Seems everyone is doing "something about it", except for regular 'ole American's who are working, doing "those jobs that American's won't do".

I was going out this week to buy a new lawn mower and a new gas grille; those purchases will now be put off until May 1st. I would encourage any American that wants to do something to counter this protest, to go out on May Day and purchase items that you had planned to buy in the next week. Just put it off until May 1st. Go out to a restaurant, buy food for the food shelter, go to a movie. Wife is not doing her grocery shopping until May Day and neither is several other folks that I have already promoted this to.

As Mark Christopher says on his web site, "Remember! May 1st, 2006 is the day we BUY AMERICA BACK! ... Because May Day is Pay Day!!!

I just hope gas isn't over 4$ when we drive to the store.

Just when, at least since Clinton left office, has America been successfully bullied?

What if things run really well on May 1? Wouldn't that be a kick in the head? (Not literally, libs---it's from an old Frank Sinatra song.)

If I had a Mexican employee who didn't show up for work on May 1, he/she would be looking for another job. That would not be an infringement of his/her right to free speech, but it would ba an appropriate response to someone who imposed a negative effect on my business in an effort to impose a negative effect on my country.

I'll bus my own table, bag my own groceries, and find something in the corner of my eye that can only be removed by my middle finger.

And this effort to browbeat, bully, and blackmail this country has convinced me that offering citizenship to any adult who has entered this country illegally would be a major mistake. Offer a green card, to anyone who qualifies by pleading guilty and paying a fine and meeting certain criteria. Allow permanent residency. But gain citizenship, with its attending protections and privileges? No way, Jose. (Didn't plan that one, it just turned out that way.)

I couldn't INVENT a DAV. Sure is good to see what passes for intellectual political discourse on the other side of the aisle.

Posted by: Almiranta [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 22, 2006 08:31 PM

Almiranta,

aside from the DAV comment...

I actually agree with you on this one

No Way, Jose is right!

Posted by: Opus [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 22, 2006 08:33 PM

That sounds so much better for May 1st than "WORKERS OF THE WORLD, UNITE! YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE BUT YOUR CHAINS."

Posted by: Macker [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 22, 2006 09:09 PM

I just hope gas isn't over 4$ when we drive to the store.

That is a rather big Whopper. Al Gore was pushing for Gas to be $5 a gallon so that we would eliminate the Internal combustion engine. From reading your post and blog, you are a true believer in Al Gore. My guess is that you are upset that it isn’t $5 a gallon like that loon Gore wanted. I thank 347 Florida voters everyday that that Asshat is not President.

Almiranta, DAV, aka LimpWang, is a lonely lil' boy from Columbia, SC, who comes to B4B, posts his little wiseass comment, then scurries off to minnowhead's blog, where brags about how he "kicked ass over at B4B." In other words, he's a harmless idiot. Go read his blog sometime--he posts there more than his two or three visitors.

Don't get me wrong; I love South Carolina. My father was born and raised there, and I still have plenty of family there. I have the SC state flag--a Palmetto tree and a crescent moon--tattoed on my not-so-massive right bicep, ala Aaron Tippin.

People such as LimpWang, aka DAV, are rare in SC. Thank God.

Getting back on topic--Paul, maybe you can publish a list here of businesses that openly complain about their lack of workers on May Day, and we can do some boycottin'. I'm all for it. I'll make sure I wear my favourite T-shirt that day; it reads "Welcome to America--Now Speak English!"

Queef is a toll booth operator from Westminster, Maryland. He's an angry fellow.

Posted by: DAV [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 22, 2006 11:46 PM

"I'll bus my own table, bag my own groceries,"

But alms, will you pay $600,000 for that $250,000 dream home you had in mind? That's what it may well cost you if Mexican construction labor is gone.

Which I'm for and I'm for using union labor on these jobs. But hope you recognize and are willing to accept graver consequences than bussing your own table or cleaning your own toilet.

Posted by: Ash [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 23, 2006 12:48 AM

BTW I think I saw keefer at the toll plaza in Maryland. He has real thick glasses, bad acne, and was reading Dr. Who comic books.

Posted by: Ash [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 23, 2006 12:50 AM

*Shakes his head*

I'm all for the Mexicans "walking out" on May 1st. In fact, have em congregate and be proud and open about being illegal immigrants. Makes it easier to hold an INS raid. (Yes yes, I know they're not called that any more.)

Anyway, buy or don't buy. Walk out or don't. It doesn't matter because in the end I doubt the government has the testicular fortitude to pass any meaningful immigration reform.

Posted by: gunther at April 23, 2006 05:11 AM

Amen to this idea, fellas! Let's really get the word out: Could everybody here, if you have free time during lunch hour, try to call Hannity or Rush or O'Reilly with this idea? I kept trying last week and couldn't get through. May 1st is hereby declared a day of shopping.

Posted by: Scott at April 23, 2006 11:18 AM

I hope they do boycot, maybe then I could shop at wallmart

What do you mean by this?

Shopping at WalMart is always a terrible idea.

Posted by: Ash [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 23, 2006 04:30 PM

Shopping at WalMart is always a terrible idea.

New Wal-mart is opening 1 mile from us, my wife and her neighborhood pals cannot wait for it to open. Only a bad ideal if you are anti-capitalist and don't like saving your family money

Not exactly. I consider myself very pro-capitalist but I still object to obviously unethical business practices. I guess you just don't know that much about how WalMart operates though. They don't just bully their employees, they bully vendors too, and they're just too big to fight. I prefer not to save money by encouraging union-busting and the forced decimation of vendor profit margins.

Posted by: nicole [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 23, 2006 07:35 PM

Oh, and this too:

#1. Take note of which businesses suffer without their illegal labor and boycott them from May 1st forward.

I guess you're not aware that May 1 isn't an "illegal immigrant" boycott day, it's just an immigrant boycott day. That counts legal ones too. Legal immigrants have no trouble seeing that Joe Sixpack is becoming quite the nativist, despite all the reassurances that legal immigrants are okay by him.

Paul, I've said this before there are at least 7 visible colors of the rainbow - not just black and white.

You don't have to be anti-capitalist or against saving money to see walmart as something besides the best thing since sliced bread.

Posted by: jacob at April 23, 2006 08:17 PM

nicole,

I thought they were leaving the "illegal" bit out because they don't want to emphasize that the boycotters are actually illegal immigrants. I thought they were calling it that to try and muddy the lines. What percentage of those boycotters do you believe are actually legal immigrants?

That's a bald-faced lie, Nicole. Shame on you.

While you are at Wal-Mart, buying all that low cost merchandise from China, remember that those purchases are rocketing China from a mainly primitive rural economy to the largest industrialized nation in the world. Within the next few years, China will import and consume more oil than the United States, and will happily buy it from Iran regardless of their nuclear intentions. Think of that when you are paying $5 a gallon for gas this summer. Think of that when we are trying to impose sanctions on Iran to avoid another trillion dollar war. Just think of all you are saving at the nice new Wal-Mart and how you are helping America.

Ash, I don't "buss" tables. At least not till they are properly bused. "Bussing" means kissing, "busses" means kisses, and that misspelling is a pet peeve of mine--- though I save the argument for capital punishment for those who indulge in the Rogue Apostrophe.

So keefer, DAV is really the Big Weenie? Not a surprise, I guess---he protesteth too much, etc. You know, it's not hard to tell the posers...the juvenile wording, the atrocious spelling, the smirky smart-assedness, all scream "ADOLESCENT!!!" Not to mention the toal ignorance of politics, real life, or basic logic.

How about muirgeo? He sounds like another pimple cream dude to me, in spite of his claims of being a doctor in Desert Storm. I'm surprised he wasn't like the really really really BEST doctor in Desert Storm---yeah, the really cool doctor, like the General Doctor.

And Ash was in the Air Force.

And I have these really cool bracelets, and if I cross my arms in front of me your death rays will just bounce off........

When only legal labor can be hired, laborers will become legal. There might be a lag time, but if people here legally can stay, and get work permits, after paying some penalty for breaking our law, then we will not be without workers.

I think it is a poor argument to say that we want illegal workers because we can get away with paying them less precisely because they ARE illegal and can't do a darned thing about it.

I have changed my mind about how to handle the "amnesty" issue. I thnk the key word is 'citizenship'. I now think that every person who came here illegally at age 18 or older should automatically be disqualified for citizenship---ever. Permanent residency is OK, but rewarding the sneering at our laws is stupid.

Posted by: Almiranta [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 23, 2006 10:07 PM

Yes al, but was it a misspelling or a hyperactive ring finger on my left hand???????????

As I was saying I have to take three busses to work each day.

Posted by: Ash [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 24, 2006 02:43 AM

busses" means kisses, true enough, but they are also the plural form of bus, as in public transportation.

Are you peeled because the best spellers in this country are always Indian or Pakistani?

Posted by: Ash [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 24, 2006 02:46 AM

I think that some of the posters here missed the point about gas at $4-5/gal., (are you listening, vero).

That idea, as put forward by Tom Friedman, of the NYT, and many others, called for a gasoline tax that would provide money for research into reducing our dependence on foreign oil at the same time that it forced conservation.

Whether or not one agrees with such an idea is hardly the point. Nobody was suggesting raising the price of gas to fill corporate coffers -- except maybe Dick Cheney and his energy task force -- but then, we'll never know that for sure.
