Leftwing Arrogance on Display

Tom Elia over at The New Editor brings to our attention an amazing article from The New Yorker which pretty much says it all about the left - I'll get to Tom's favorite quote from the article in a minute, but I just love the way it opens:

The imminence of catastrophic global warming may be a subject far from the ever-drifting mind of President Bush—whose eschatological preoccupations privilege Armageddon over the Flood—but it is of growing concern to the rest of humanity.

You can just see the author - David Remnick - with a sneer of contempt on his face when he wrote that. He clearly holds President Bush and, by extension, Christians in contempt - and we can also see the supreme self-centerdness of a typical leftist. Because a leftist thinks something important, it follows that all right-thinking people also think it important. No room in leftwing thinking for the prospect that other people might have other priorities...but Tom Elia points out the most incredible passage:

Contrary to Ralph Nader’s credo that there was no real difference between the major parties, it is close to inconceivable that the country and the world would not be in far better shape had Gore been allowed to assume the office that a plurality of voters wished him to have. One can imagine him as an intelligent and decent President, capable of making serious decisions and explaining them in the language of a confident adult. Imagining that alternative history is hard to bear, which is why Gore always has the courtesy, in his many speeches, and at the start of “An Inconvenient Truth,” to deflect that discomfort with a joke: “Hello, I’m Al Gore and I used to be the next President of the United States.”

There it is, good people - the reason for all the rancor and bitterness...but it also points out just how out of touch and elitist the left really is. Other than a dyed-in-the-wool leftist, who thinks that Al Gore is smart? As far as intellect goes, I rate him pretty poorly - and, in fact, it is Gore's adherence to the most absurd and extremist view of global warming which, for me at least, proves he's just an opportunistic con-artist who is riding the left to what he hopes is the Democratic nomination in 2008.

We keep having these people for political lunch because they are so out of touch...bring it on, lefties; the more of this sort of thing, the better.

Most Americans, including large numbers of Christians, consider global warming to be a very serious problem.

Al Gore got more votes than George Bush did in the 2000 election. I wouldn't call that "having these people for political lunch".

Brian,

But we still beat you in 2000...and in 2002 and in 2004; we're going to do it again this year.

Global warming is something to think about - but Al Gore's position on it is extreme, unsupported by anything like scientific research and is clearly designed as a bid for support among the leftwing environmental extremists...and I wasn't talking about Gore having contempt for Christians, but the author of the piece.

Keep on drinking, nay, guzzling the kool-aid. Your boy has flat out made a mess of just about everything. He is going down in flames by his own hand. I look at Al Gore and see 200 times the statesman that dubya is. Quick, more kool-aid, must get others to drink. If you truly believe in christan ideals, I hope you reap what you sow many, many times over.

I'm reminded of a pig-nosed chubby kid on the playground who continually use the taunt "scoreboard" during kickball games.

Again, Mark, on one hand you claim to "love" your enemies, on the other hand, you take joy in their defeat. Not simply joy in your party winning, but joy in BEATING the left.

You paint all lefties with the same brush and treat em all with disdain. That's why I get to sick when I see the ******** you write about "loving" your adversaries. It's just so much BS.

Tom Shipley:
You wrote "I get [s]o sick when I see the ******* you write about loving your adversaries..."

Mr. Shipley, then why do you read this site? Why do you waste your time? You are certainly not convincing any moderate or right-thinking reader with your words. Wouldn't your time be better employed elsewhere? And my comment is written as a loving admonition to my adversary. I'm not condeming you; I'm not using any profanity to describe your position. I am only gently encouraging you to go elsewhere, in order to spare yourself the sickness of reading this site. Go in peace.

wiat a minute, when did the iceage end that the "experts" agreed was certain starting in the '70's?

gosh I'm confused...

Posted by: OhioOrrin at April 19, 2006 10:51 AM

Mark.

Al Gores concepts of global warming are completely from the facts of science and from the International Panel on Climate Changes third assessment report.

Honest now Mark have you even read the IPPC report. Even one of the summaries?

The Atlantic Ocean is as hot as it ever has been in modern history. Do you think that has anything to do with global warming? Do you think this is gonna be a bad year again for hurricanes? The strength of Hurricanes is directly related to the amount of warm water in the Atlantic ocean. Plan on a big time drought in the Midwest this summer as well and more major forest fires.

...And yet you keep coming back for more. There seems to be a decidedly masochistic streak in you Shipley.

Tom,

Not actually - and you'll have cause later today to regret what you said...you should always pay close attention to all that I say.

I don't take joy in anyone's defeat - but the fact of the matter is that you have been defeated, again and again...perhaps you should step back, think a bit, and maybe realise that your defeats are not the result of conspiracies by Diebold, but on account of what you advocate...

Posted by: Mark Noonan [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 19, 2006 11:57 AM

Muirgeo,

And did you read the actual IPCC report, or just the alarmist summary?

Posted by: Mark Noonan [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 19, 2006 11:58 AM

Muirgeo,

Perhaps you can enlighten me on this subject.

The "Atlantic Ocean is as hot as it ever has been" wouldn't that increase evaporation? And given the prevailing winds over the ocean, wouldn’t the evaporation move north toward the North Pole, as air masses don't move southward toward the Gulf? And arriving at the Pole, wouldn’t the evaporation freeze and fall to the earth causing the polar icecap to become thicker? And wouldn’t that cause the oceans to drop, exposing more land at the coastlines?

Here’s where I’m confused, doesn’t al-Gore, in his tedious tome predict coastal flooding?

And didn’t the experts say that the increase in the hurricane activity was caused by the El Nino effect in the Pacific; a northward flow of warm water, which caused warm moist air to move to the Gulf Coast increasing the upper air masses to become more humid and unstable?

Which “experts” are we to believe?

Posted by: Bane of Liberals' Existence [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 19, 2006 12:47 PM

Bane,

Here are the answers to your questions.

1) Yes
2) Yes
3) Yes increased precipitation but no to increased ice accumulation do to increaed temperatures. Or in Greenland increased melting at the edges but increased snow thickness inland and at high elevations. But overall net ice loss in spite of the increased precipitation. Exactly as the models predict.
4) No, th oceans are rising for the same reasons in 3 above and do to thermal expansion of warming ocean waters.
5) Yes
6) Partly true but not the sole cause of increased hurricane activity. Hurricanes feed of gloablally warmed Atlantic oceans.
7) Believe the experts yes, not the pundits.

Glad I could help.

Thank you, but the experts hardly agree, regarding hurricanes;

"… the erroneous claim that hurricane intensity or frequency has risen significantly in recent decades in response to the warming trend seen in surface temperature. Second is the claim that a future surface-warming trend would lead to more frequent and stronger storms. We believe that both of these are demonstrably false," "Computer simulations suggest that in a warmer world most of the warming would occur in the Polar Regions. Atmospheric circulation, which crucially affects storms, is driven primarily by the temperature difference, or gradient, between the tropics and the poles," "Warmer polar regions would reduce this gradient and thus lessen the overall intensity or frequency or both of storms - not just tropical storms but mid-latitude winter storms as well (such as blizzards and northeasters)," the climatologists added.

The experts include Dr. James O'Brien, professor of meteorology & oceanography at the Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies at Florida State University; Dr. Gary Sharp, scientific director at the Center for Climate/Ocean Resources Study; Dr. Anthony Lupo, professor of atmospheric science at the University of Missouri - Columbia; Dr. David Legates, associate professor of climatology at the University of Delaware; and George Taylor, Oregon State climatologist.

should I trust these experts?

It's ok fellow lefties and left-leaning centrists. The right wing doesn't understand us. The guys here take every tiny little thing they can find about some Bush-hating nut and portray the rest of us the same way. This is just a fight or flight mechanism kicking in.

They sit there and make us all out to be atheists, think any one of us would take a shot at Bush if we had the opportunity, and blame him for all of the world's problems. That is simply not true.

I am a Christian, as are many many many liberals. If Bush came to my house, I would welcome him in and feed him dinner...not reach for my 12 guage. And most of us realize that people are responsible for global warming, not the president. It is a simple fact that you cannot legislate intelligence, as unfortunate as that is.

Righties in here do not understand us, and just like the bullies did in school, they blast us with a bunch of BS to make them feel better about themselves. I tell you, if Gore or Kerry were president, and the situation in Iraq and the rest of the world was exactly the same, they would not be defending him as they are with Bush, they would be blasting every little thing they could just as the lefties are doing now. I know it, you know it, and they know it. Arguing with them is pointless because they are major hypocrites and have been brainwashed into thinking their way is the only way, and it is their way or the highway.

murkyego has already called people illiterate and stupid on other threads for not buying into the global warming scam. I guess if you claim to see the emperor's new clothes, you will attack those who don't.

What warming there is is unavoidable. It is due to increased solar activity. Yes, in some places, ice is melting. Boo hoo. In my part of the world, we have been getting steadily colder since 1998. Japanes scientists (SCIENTISTS!!!) are warning of a new mini Ice Age in the next decade or so, due to decreased solar activity.

But the left can't just look at science, and the facts, because that provides so little emotional catharsis. They need to have some emotional fix, and that comes from identifying, hating, loathing, attacking, and generally obsessing about an ENEMY---and then blaming him for everything. Science itself is soooo boring----but All Hate, All The Time---now that's something you can sink your fangs into

Al Gore is a blithering idiot, a legend only in his own (and similar) minds. He wants to eliminate internal combustion engines. He buys into every crackpot theory that comes down the pike. Anyone who thinks we would have been better off with Gore as president must long for a country with repeated attacks and rising death tolls of Americans, because Osama himself said the weaknesses of the Clinton administration convinced him he could kill us at will, with no repercussions. And Whiny Al was not a tenth the man Clinton was.

The Left has no comprehension of unintended consquences---easy if you just erase your memory bank every time an inconvenient fact comes along.

Hybrid cars the salvation of the world? Sure, till you have replace all those batteries---and put the thousands/millions of old ones in land fills. Ever stop to think of the ecological impact of millions of batteries dumped into the system? Nah---too hard, too inconvenient. (I say "millions" to accommodate the solar energy movement, as well. And even wind energy has to be stored.)

Reasonable, rational, debates and investigations are ongoing, searching for real solutions to real problems. But murky and his ilk are too obsessed with fake answers to imaginary problems---it just FEELS better.

But back on thread...

I love the liberal "intellectual" snobs who don't hesitate to call the Founding Fathers ignorant idiots. When their guy gets a plurality (at least as long as states quit counting votes once they know where their electoral votes are going---who knows what the popular vote would be if they counted all the absentee ballots they toss because they don't think they will make a difference) suddenly the Founding Fathers just didn't understand how important the popular vote really is. But the liberal elite are so much smarter, and never hesitate to let you know.

I heard a guy on the radio in November of 2002 ranting and raving about how "ignorant" the people in the "flyover states" are, and how the rules should be changed to make sure only the "smart" ones on the coasts get to make the big decisions, like who should run the country.

The sneering, snotty, lefty conviction that anyone who doesn't agree with their side is just too darned stupid to get it is not new. The Left has always had its stronghold in the so-called "intellectual" communities.

But history will tell, and history DOES tell. It tells us of the grotesque mistakes made in the name of leftist so-called 'intellectualism'. It tells of the self-anointed elite being wrong on nearly every significant decision ever debated. It is still the "intellectual" who thinks Communism is great, capitalism is bad, and patriotism is scary. It was the "intellectuals" who loved Stalin, praised Mussolini, doted on Castro, supported Hiss, and still love Communism. You have to agree, that's pretty smart!

And it is the Ivory Tower snotty snooty smug "intellectual" who can live in that tower and sneer at the rest of us only because 'ordinary people' elect the right leaders, fight the right wars, and protect the rights they think they have to explain to us.

Posted by: Almiranta [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 19, 2006 04:05 PM

Captain Ron,

Then how do you explain my stout defense of Clinton's military actions? Even the bombing of the pharmacutical plant...backed him.

Patriotism requires it - politics ends at the waters edge...Clinton was contemptible, but as far as any foreigner was concerned, he was my honored President and I'd be damned before any foreigner would be able to use anything I said in anti-American propaganda.

Posted by: Mark Noonan [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 19, 2006 04:38 PM

Raker, you see 200 times the statesman in Gore?? Did you know he hasn't technically been a statesman for over 6 yrs? Alittle different walking the walk...Gore spent 4 yrs folding while VP and getting nothing done, talk about drinking coolaid.

Hmmm, GW has messed everything up...but people are employed and owning homes at a higher rate than ever - and the economy is booming, checked the market lately...and note it isn't full of dot.com money and unsustainable PE ratios like in the 90's. I like that come-back about how umemployed people aren't factoring into the national averages b/c their benefits ran out so they're sitting at home not being counted. Another mis-information attempt, the unemployement numbers have been represented this way...so if the numbers go down, they're an apples-to-apples comparison to the same subset from decades earlier...along with those then that were off benefits.

My country right or wrong, my honored president huh? What drivel.

Hate to dispel another one of Mark's mistatements, but there are many Christians who are working to do something about global warming.

As far as I'm concerned, this is not a political issue at all, in the sense of liberal vs. conservative.

The fact is that around the world today there is overwhelming consensus that global warming is being caused by human activity and that potential consequences are truly catastrophic. The evidence of global warming, from the disintegrating ice caps and glaciers to the waning of the gulf stream to record heat in 10 of the last 14 years (to name a few) should be enough to convince anyone.

The issue of global warming has been made political by a disinformation campaign led by Exxon Mobil and other vested corporate interests and backed by the Bush administration.

This is really no different than the anti-smoking campaigns of the past. Scientific studies overwhelming established a link between smoking and a variety of illnesses, but big tobacco had their own hired guns and PR flacks to counter whatever the kooky scientists were saying. They added in a dose of fear mongering, saying that banning cigarette smoking in public places would cause restaurants, bars, etc. to go out of business.

Of course, they were also able to create enough confusion and doubt to keep the status quo long enough to keep Congress at bay and the profits rolling in.

Mark dumbass Noonan is just peeved because Al Gore has made a movie that will convince even more of the public about the reality of the situation and become angry about Bush's lies and obfuscation.
