Mark Steyn on Iran

Clear eyed and dead-on:

Even a loser can win when he’s up against a defeatist. A big chunk of Western civilization, consciously or otherwise, has given the impression that it’s dying to surrender to somebody, anybody. Reasonably enough, Islam figures: Hey, why not us? If you add to the advantages of will and manpower a nuclear capability, the odds shift dramatically.

What, after all, is the issue underpinning every little goofy incident in the news, from those Danish cartoons of Mohammed to recommendations for polygamy by official commissions in Canada to the banning of the English flag in English prisons because it’s an insensitive “crusader” emblem to the introduction of gender-segregated swimming sessions in municipal pools in Puget Sound? In a word, sovereignty. There is no god but Allah, and thus there is no jurisdiction but Allah’s. Ayatollah Khomeini saw himself not as the leader of a geographical polity but as a leader of a communal one: Islam. Once those urbane socialist émigrés were either dead or on the plane back to Paris, Iran’s nominally “temporal” government took the same view, too: its role is not merely to run national highway departments and education ministries but to advance the cause of Islam worldwide.

The leaders of Iran may be crazy in our eyes, but they are deadly seroius. Just as Hitler and Lenin believed their respective insanities were the best thing for the world, so do the Islamo-fascists of Iran. That should be kept in mind - a massive amount of death and destruction is fine as far the mullahs are concerned provided they perceive that Iranian Islamo-facsism will emerge on top of the rubble heap.

I believe we had our chance for diplomacy to work - we could, perhaps, have got the mullahs to see reason...right up until about mid point through the 2004 election season. By then, the increasingly shrill and defeatist rhetoric on the American left started to convince the enemy that President Bush is the strong-will aberration and that as soon as President Bush leaves office, some sort of Clinton/Carter will come along to formally surrender to Iran.

I just hope that some day some of the anti-war left people step back for a moment from their heated rhetoric and realise what they have done.

Mark, I hit the big "five-O" next month. I've been observing the anti-war left since the late-1960's; heck, I was one of the unwashed during my late teens.

These people will never wake up, even if they're blown up. They blame America for all the strife in the world, even the Islamofascism that was occurring some ten centuries before we colonized this great land.

Just as I said earlier, in another thread, the DemocRATs are hypocrites when it comes to dealing with the axis of evil...

What the Left is trying to do is save the lives of human beings. What is the Right trying to do? Peace

Posted by: steve at April 18, 2006 08:00 PM

Steve,

I know what you think you are trying to do...if only you would open your eyes, you'd see the piles of corpses which have resulted from leftwing attempts to save lives...you just have an entirely unrealistic view of the world.

Mark

Are you blaming the Left for the carnage in Iraq?

I don't know what pile of corpses you are refering to. Please clarify.

What has the left done to embolden the enemy? The left has not been in power for roughly 6 years now. Iran has become a greater threat and Iraq has become chaotic under Republican leadership of this country. Neocon foreign policy infuriates the Muslim world, and then the right blames the powerless Democrats for encouraging them...I don't follow the logic here. I'd also like to remind everyone that Richard Nixon "surrendered" the Vietnam War, and we all know how that turned out for the South Vietnamese. Somehow losing the Vietnam War turned into a great grievance against the Democratic Party for the right in this country. Why do Republicans blame the powerless before the powerful for problems that happened on their watch?

I think you are all either a bunch of right wing hicks or a bunch of rich a$$ hicks. You guys dont care about anything or anyone except for yourselves. Only when the power of love overcomes the love for power there will be peace. See you in hell.

Poor steve, can't get his head out of Cindy's bum. Rwanda, steve, Rwanda--that's how the left saves lives. Peace this!!!

Steve,

RE: "What the Left is trying to do is save the lives of human beings. What is the Right trying to do?"

I realize you believe your approach will save lives, but ultimately, it will cost far more lives that it will save. As Mark said, liberals do not have a realistic view of the world. They live in the theoretical and utopian world taught to them by their liberal professors. It sounds good, but that is not the world we live in. History teaches us that, and nothing has changed that would indicate it will be any different in the foreseeable future.

There is no god but Allah

Allah interprets as "The God". As Mohammed explained it, it is the same God that Jews worship, and that Christians worship. Mohammed did not proselytize to Jews or Christians to convert to Islam. He said we all worship the same God regardless of what we call ourselves.

Matthew,

Well, I pray to God that I shan't see you there.

Posted by: Mark Noonan [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 19, 2006 01:43 AM

Ash,

Where in heck do you pick up your info from? Mohammed slaughtered Jews who wouldn't convert...geesh: try reading at least a bit of history.

Hey hoser did you forget about Cambodia??? Our withdrawl from Vietnam at the behest of the liberal left anit-war movement helped create that holocaust.
