Another non-story by the Associated Press that I am sure lefties will make a big deal of...
Twenty-four of 32 Wisconsin communities approved referendums Tuesday calling for the immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq, while eight others voted against such measures.Though the referendums carry no weight — municipal governments can’t dictate the federal government’s actions — organizers hoped to send a message.
The Wisconsin Network for Peace and Justice, which helped organize the efforts, was already looking at expanding it to more cities in future elections, said spokeswoman Rachel Friedman. She said elected officials should take the results into account as they look toward the November elections.
“They have seven months to listen to us, to the voters and to do the right thing,” Friedman said. “The people have spoken. This is what democracy looks like.”
But have "the people" really spoken? Absolutely not. Wisconsin has 1,266 towns and only 32 voted on the referenda. That amounst to a mere 8 percent of the state's 2004 electorate, of which, only 2 percent cast ballots for the referendum. The 32 towns were also heavily Democratic, and a smaller percentage voted for a pullout (60%) than voted for Kerry in 2004 (69%). So, the referendum actually did not do well at all, considering the circumstances.
Since Kerry won these towns with 69% of the vote, it cannot be claimed that they accurately represent Wisconsin, which Kerry narrowly won 49% to 48%. If Democrats give any credence to this story, then you know they are really desperate to exaggerate any signs of opposition to the war in Iraq.

You're right, Matt - it is a non-story.
Everyone knows by now that most Americans have jumped off the Iraq Debacle Ship, and rightly so. The jig's up, Sheep.
Man, I can't wait for November ...
Frankly, it would mean absolutely nothing if the entire Peoples Republic of Wisconsin voted for an Iraq pullout.
Well said maf; I was going to say the same thing.
Here in Wisconsin, this of course got more play then elsewhere, but it's honestly not much news here either. There aren't too many unapologetic war supporters left.
It's worth pointing out that the far majority of these referenda stated the question in the form, "The U.S. should immediately withdraw troops from Iraq," not the weaker variety of start withdrawing, get international peace keeping support, etc. Many people voted against for this reason, and despite Matt's claims, it does not bode well for Bush and Crew. You put anti-gay marriage amendments on the ballot to turn out the base, and its likely this fall the opposite will happen with war referendums.

You're doing bad math. An 8% sample is more than enough to represent the whole - opinion polls use a much smaller sample. If you doubt the accuracy of opinion polls, ask marketing directors why they use them.
The truth is that the numbers are in line with the public opinion nationally and lower than the numbers in the military itself, which Zogby reports support withdrawal within a year by some 74%.
But don't take my word for it. Rest on your imagined laurels until '06 and see how the great success of Iraq helps out GOP candidates at the polls.
Although, it's pretty likely that a lot of GOP candidates will run on their newly crafted plans to get out of Iraq.
I am sure lefties will make a big deal of... You're right Matt, it was all over the MSM last week. Didn't you see it? It was non stop on the Sunday shows as well. Go to D-Kos for the recap.
Will we see no end to the hard slanted efforts of the leftist mainstream press to try and "fit" so called "news" to their views. I don't see this hard left group of pinko so-called "journalist" doing a survey or mock vote with "Nascar Dads" or doing a poll of the majority red states and communities that voted for Bush. That would be a waste of their precious time since it wouldn't get the "propaganda" they want. I have seen this left slant of the press since Walter "Crankcase" consistenly did it in the early 60's, and I am sick of all of them.
Man, I can't wait for November ...
We can't either, because we're looking forward to you kookbats bitchin' and moanin', for another two years, about "stolen" elections and the "culture of corruption."
Speaking of culture of corruption, a few DemocRAT names were mentioned today on the radio. Two, I can recall--Conyers(D-MI), and Jefferson(D-LA). The third was some DemocRAT from Robert "KKK" Byrd's state, WV. there are more to come, folks. Remember, this is an election year. No more Mr. Nice Guy.
Sheep that, mf53...
This is part of an ACLU (who else?) sponsored campaign called "The Campaign to Restore the Rule of Law"
The are sponsoring "EMERGENCY TOWN MEETINGS" in communities around the nation on:
"Bush Administration's Domestic Spying, Torture, Rendition, and other illegal Programs"
They don't widely dissmeninate info on the meetings, but advertise them on left wing blogs and chat sites, as well as local college campuses. Needless to say the meetings are well attended by fringe left wing kooks who are all too eager to bash the Administration and the USA.
The Local sponsor of each meeting is a member of the local ACLU Chapter, accompanied by the local lefty defeatocrat House representative, or defeatocrat House candidate (Could be state, federal or both). The highly partisan crowd of lefties makes it easy to draft a "Resolution"
This is all designed to win back the House in the fall, by creating the false appearance of a ground swell of support, against the Patriot Act and against the Administration.
In the meantime, the ACLU is also trying to defend ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT RIGHTS!!!!!
On their web site they have a letter they wish to be sent to all legislators. The following are some of the details:
"As your constituent, I urge you to oppose any immigration reform bill that infringes on fundamental civil liberties (In other words the civil rights of ILLEGALS) and erodes the right of due process (FOR ILLEGALS).
Undocumented Immigrants (euphamism for ILLEGALS), play a vital role in our society and keep our economy afloat.(!???!!!!)
The problem is our broken immigration system, not the hard-working individuals who come to this country seeking a better life for themselves and their families. (So we're the problem right? How about blaming the countries where they came from?????)
I ask you to oppose any immigration bill that contains the following provisions:
* Section 202 - The indefinite detention of undocumented migrants who cannot be returned to their countries of origin. (Let's just let them out into the general population)
Congress shouldn't expand this power - you should resolve this dilemma instead. The hundreds (note the problem is HUNDREDS) who are in indefinite detention are held because their home countries won't accept their repatriation or our government has no diplomatic relationship with their country (The ACLU points out they are FROM Iran and Cuba...Can you say TERRORISTS?).
* Section 301 - Requiring employers to verify the eligibility of all citizens, lawful permanent residents and visa holders to work. (No let's have anyone work...WHERE THE HELL ARE THE UNIONS on this???)
* Sections 701 and 707 - Stripping the U.S. Circuit Courts of Appeal of their jurisdiction to hear immigration appeals and requiring that all appeals be sent to the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals in Washington, DC." (No...let's give it to the 9th Circuit who will grant immediate citizenship along with a new car and waterfront property for all illegals.)
My recommendation is to attend an ACLU "EMERGENCY TOWN MEETING" and ask the ACLU why they are defending the rights of illegal alien rights over the rights of AMERICANS. Is it the ACLU or the IACLU (ILLEGAL ALIEN Civil Liberties Union)???
Umm, I'd love to see Mark delete Phnx's absurd post with his swift "off topic" explanation.
maf,
I don't think that is off topic - it ties in with the subject at hand.
And, please, get the DNC to run on an explicitly anti-victory (you call it "anti-war") platform this November...heck, I'll even donate money to the DNC if they'll do that...
maf,
Just idly have to say this:
Man, we are going to clobber the Democrats in November...I can't wait to hear your explanation for the loss...it'll be endlessly entertaining...
Ha ha ....I'm in Wisconsin, and I love the 'sample' that Wisco speaks of above. That 8% is in the cities of Madison (New world Commie Capital) and the fanciful elite suburbs of Whitefish Bay and Shorewood!! Too fricken funny.. no reputable poll takers would go to those communities exclusively...methinks Wisco got his edumacation at HelpMeOut U....and bastions of population like Exeland where even 3 cows voted, merely because they were forced to by anxious Democrats. This does not make a liberal victory, nor does it show vast support for their cause. Either way we can just ignore and keep on killing terrorists, to the anguish of these effete pithy pussies. By the end of the year, Wisconsin will go RED in the state house, after their play for pay Dem Governor is driven out of town. Old whats his name barter's with casinos to pad his PAC (I know something about this), and his administration is ripe with favoritism in the letting of contracts. He is against vote I.D. and education vouchers (until he was forced to remit by black leaders), and everything else common sense citizens want from their government.
For the record, by creating an Islamic Republic funded by the U.S. is your victory? Yea, see to me that isn't victory or even a win, thats the difference I think, you guys just don't get it no matter what, and think all that matters is the x in the win column.
Mark,
You've got to excuse Maf. As a leftist he sees no connection between, Iraq, the GWOT, immigration, and domestic security.
If any leftist were to admit even the most remote connection between these, his head would explode from processing complex thought.
BTW maf is the 53 a reference to your IQ?
This kind of garbage is a national disgrace. It makes America look weak. These people need to watch their p's and q's.
