And they are doing such a wonderful job.

1976

That's the last time the Democrats won the Presidency with more than 50% of the vote and that was coming off of Watergate.

1976...30 years ago.

The last one that was worth a damn was JFK, and by today's standards he couldn't even get elected as a Democrat. Afterall, he cut taxes and invaded a country (Cuba) who didn't attack us because he thought it was the right thing to do.

What a concept.

The Democratic Party...a great party no more. What the hell happened to these people other than being totally brainwashed and taken over the by the lunatic fringe? What a shame.

".....and invaded a country (Cuba) who didn't attack us because he thought it was the right thing to do."

Uh Jim, Just a few facts:

1) Kennedy did not invade Cuba. He set up a blockade. There were 60 Russian ships on the way to Cuba to finish installation of missles on that island. Kennedy's bold move was meant to block their path.

2) There really were WMD's as aerial surveillance proved.

3) President Kennedy convened a special group of senior advisers to meet secretly at the White House. He allowed input from experts.

4)President Kennedy was a true war hero (PT 109)

5) Our European allies were solidly behind us. Even Charles DeGaulle in France.

6) Krushchev backed down and agreed to dismantle the weapons that were in Cuba.

This was a textbook demonstration on how to use military might, without using military might.

Our cowboy, weekend warrior that didn't even show up on weekends, should study President Kennedy and benefit from the lessons of a succesful man.

Hey Ash I think he is talking about the bay of pigs, which wasn't american military, but I'm sure he doesn't know that. And yes Jim, Kennedy went with the moderate route instead of invading, and now we know the soviet ground commanders had permission to launch, so basically if we had pulled a bush life would be over (and it wouldn't have happened in your precious little jerusalem!) but instead we have a level headed smart person who thinks in there and lookie here, the southern half of the United states still exists!! I'm sure you would prefer the large scale nuclear war though, cause then you could say you didn't back down and call the soviets pussies or something...

Posted by: steve [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2006 01:15 PM

Bay of Pigs ASH!!!

Bay of Pigs.

Apparently you need a history lesson!

Posted by: Warriornation [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2006 02:04 PM

Steve

If you believe the Bay of Pigs wasn't about the American Military being involved you are just being hypocritical. It was CIA and DOD backed and most certainly endorsed by the administration.

Point is, an American President authorized and backed the downing of another regime that had done no harm to us.

And no Steve, I do not prefer a large scale war and neither does Bush. The fact remains that a JFK couldn't even get out of the primaries with the lunatics you guys now have on the left.

My father's Democratic Party isn't even recognizeable any longer.

Posted by: Warriornation [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2006 02:06 PM

Damn, you guys are right and my zippers down. Sorry for the mistake.

But Kennedy had cajones of steel during the missile crisis, no?

Why even a tough hombre like warriornation has to admire Kennedy that day!

Posted by: Ash [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2006 03:40 PM

"I do not prefer a large scale war and neither does Bush."

Take a few minutes and read Seymour Hirsh's piece in the New Yorker. Sounds to me like Bush now wants his legacy to be bombing Iran back to the stone ages via nukes. Damned if that don't sound like large scale war to my humble self.

Posted by: Ash [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2006 03:44 PM

Ash

I admire JFK completely. Why can't your party get a few more of Kennedy and Truman back through the ranks. Even FDR.

I'm not a Republican, but I am conservative. The demise of both parties, but especially the Democratic side has really weakened this country in my opinion.

I'd love to have another JFK who cut taxes to the core and didn't pussy foot around with other nations. Can you imagine a Democrat doing either of those things today?

Posted by: Warriornation [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2006 04:18 PM

Ash

Seymour Hersch...please. First of all, options must be left on the table but let's not forget that Hersch has his agenda.

Bush is exploring all options as any leader should. If he was a war monger, as you imply, then we would have already gone into N. Korea, Iran, Syria, etc, etc.

Not the case. Even in Iraq we gave them opportunity after opportunity after opportunity to avoid it and they chose not to. Hardly the actions of a war monger.

I doubt very much we will use Nuclear Tactic bunker busters, but the fact that it is being talked about tells Iran just how damn serious we are. Do you think that got their attention or do you think when Kerry and his ilk say "we need to keep talking and holding hands" pushes the needle for action?

My guess is the former, not the latter.

Posted by: Warriornation [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2006 04:21 PM

Well, I'm not a Democrat so "your party" is an unfair statement. I'm a liberal however. I don't know why these giants don't come along more often. The Republicans are offering no equal to these men either.

A pet theory of mine is that anyone that accomplished wouldn't want to be president anymore. I know I wouldn't, cause I'd prefer no one knew some of the things I did in my younger days.

Posted by: Ash [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2006 05:27 PM

I think we already have their attention and as the radicals in Iraq have proven, they ain't afraid of no nook-ye-lar bombs. I suspect those in Iran are even less intimidated. These are folks that believe there is honor in dying.

Fortunately we are stretched so thin it would be foolhardy for us to intitiate a preemptive strike on N. Korea, Syria, or Iran. Frankly I'm afraid N Korea would kick our ass.

And no one should want to drag China into all this crap.

And what's wrong with Seymour Hersch? He's ballsy and there are very few out there that are really doing the job of a journalist.

WarriorNation:

----------
But was Iraq such a threat that we had to go in right then and there? We had to stop looking for those behind the attack that hit us in Al Qaeda??

Why are you so hell-bent on "pushing the needle for action" in Iran, but you hate to talk about deadlines and time frames in Iraq?

And by the way... how do you think other Middle Eastern nations feel about the even remote possibility of the US using nuclear strikes in their backyard?
That is one hell of a way to make friends, huh?

Posted by: Sick of Lies [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2006 06:06 PM

N. Korea would kick our ass? Come on...they can't even feed or clothe their troops. Get real.

Sick of Lies

I'll tell you why I want to push the needle, because if you wait to long you're F'd. Clinton cut a deal with N. Korea where the Koreans said they wouldn't build nukes. Low and behold they couldn't be trusted and they built them....and now that situation is F'd.

Iran is stupid enough not only to try and build them but has said publicly they will wipe off one of our greatest allies off the face of the earth.

Therefore, my Sick of Lies friend (God your moniker is hilarious...how did you survive the Clinton years), you cannot wait and "hope" like Clinton did with the North Koreans.

Can you imagine the Middle East with a Nuke in the hands of the imams?

Why on earth would you even want to chance that? Damn right I want to push the needle.

History is littered with this feel good "things will be ok" attitude that you are taking and it resulted in millions of deaths as a result. Appeasement does not work and it never has. War sucks, but sometimes war saves lives. Many times something short of war (a military action) is all that is needed.

Waiting is unacceptable.

Posted by: Warriornation [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2006 07:03 PM

WarriorNation my good friend... and that is quite a moniker for wanting to bomb no and ask questions later....
now what if Presidents of the 60s, 70s and 80s had the same feelings about Russia that you do now towards Iran?
Bomb them now before they get you.

How can you go through life like that?

I am not saying to "put them in therapy" like the crazys claim Dems want.
What I would do (since you asked) is increase sanctions. Build an alliance with the rest of the countries ESPECIALLY with those countries in the Middle East. This has GOT to work better than acting alone as a wild cowboy. I would work with other countries to pressure Iran. You are really playing with fire and it is going to back fire in the worst possible way if you try to police the world without help.
Didn't your momma ever teach you it is best to work together to put down a bully?
Then again... with a nickname like warriornation, I am guessing you are more for bombing than diplomacy.

But that is ok... I can handle debating with you. At least there is debate unlike some where it is just "you idiot this and you moron that".

Posted by: Sick of Lies [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2006 11:03 PM

Sick of Lies

Russia already had nukes in the 60's, 70's and 80's....Iran doesn't.

Try again my friend.

And my moniker happens to be because I graduated from Marquette University as an undergraduate. The Marquette Warriors (at least at the time until liberals took over and changed the nickname to the Golden Eagles).

Now, my mom taught me a lot of things, including standing up for myself. That's how you could tell the pussies in the group vs the ones that grew up to be men. I can only guess which group you are in.
