Deputy DHS Press Secretary Arrested In Child Porn Sting

Via AP:

MIAMI - A deputy press secretary for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security was charged with using a computer to seduce a child after authorities said he struck up sexual conversations with an undercover detective posing as a 14-year-old girl.

Brian J. Doyle, 55, the fourth-ranking official in the department's public affairs office, was expected to be placed on administrative leave Wednesday.

"He said last night that he was going to waive extradition. If he does that, we may have him back by the end of the week," Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday. "He could get to court today and some lawyer may say 'no, you don't want to do that.' The bottom line is we don't know when he's coming back."

Authorities arrested Doyle on Tuesday at his Silver Spring, Md., home as he was online with the "girl." The undercover detective had called Doyle at work and said she got a Web camera, as he had asked her to do, and wanted to test it out, said Carrie Rodgers, Polk County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman.

"He said he would get on the computer when he got home from work so we knew he would be on," Rodgers said. "When (police) went to his door, he was on the computer in the middle of a conversation with the girl."

Doyle found the teenager's profile online and began having sexually explicit conversations with her on the Internet on March 14, the sheriff's office said in a statement.

The charges:

On March 27, 2006, Tenth Judicial Circuit (FL) Judge Neil Rodenberry viewed the pornographic movies in question and found probable cause to believe the material sent over the Internet by Doyle was Harmful to Minors, as defined by Florida State Statute 847.001(6). The next day, March 28th, 23 felony charges were direct-filed by Assistant State Attorney Brad Copley and a warrant for the arrest of Brian Doyle was signed by Judge J. Dale Durrance. The charges are as follows: 7 counts Use of a Computer to Seduce a Child, and 16 counts of Transmission of Harmful Material to a Minor.

Captain Ed says this is another black mark against the DHS vetting process:

In this case, Doyle's extracurricular activities escaped everyone's attention, including (one supposes) the FBI and its pre-hire background check. It still reflects badly on the White House and the DHS, which is why political appointees such as Doyle are supposed to get a thorough vetting not just for security risks but also for the potential to embarrass the administration they serve. In the future, the Bush team had better learn to vet their candidates a little more thoroughly. Voters may not remember who Jack Abramoff is come November, but they will certainly remember who hired the Dirty Old Man of the DHS.

With all due respect to the Captain, I'm not so sure how the DHS would have been able to know about this unless Doyle had come right out and admitted it during the vetting process - unless he had a prior criminal history of doing such things, which DHS surely would have found doing a simple criminal background check.

Regardless, even though it's a bad day for the Dept. of Homeland Security, it's a good day for children because this child predator is no longer out on the streets.

This has nothing to do with the White House - they didn't hire him the DHS hired him and I agree with the poster - that unless you can read someone's else mind you are not going to know things like this. Thank God he wasn't a teacher or a doctor and could or done more harm to many more people!

Unfortunately, these perverted, predator pigs exist at every level of our society. I'm glad to know they're aggressively going after them.

Posted by: Rplat at April 5, 2006 12:50 PM

Well, you're going to have a few of the trolls (and a few Dem party members) make this into some sort of political issue.

But even they will have to admit that there is little you can do to discover this kind of behavior during the vetting process. You'd have to start with the supposition that an individual is a pedophile or whatever unsavory thing you can think of, and then have to obtain evidence to disprove it; something that even the most rabid anti-GOP partisan would say is wrong and a violation of the Constitution.

Doyle was only caught by chance. If it wasn't for a law enforcement sting, he may have continued for some time.

Hey semby -- or a priest?

Hey semby -- or a lib?

Actually, I'm surprised that Saliva and his merry band of libs haven't already turned this thread into their own little "culture of corruption" forum...

I'm disappointed in the reaction I've found on conservative blogs. No big hew and cry, just a few mentions here and there. Catching a sexual preditor is a big deal, especially when he is a high-ranking official. For too many of our political blogers, silence seems to be the comment of the day. Silence to evil is assension. Whether it is self-censoring by news media of "offensive" religous cartoons or staying mute about the arrest of a high-ranking public offical because he is in your party. Doing the right thing can be a lot harder when it means criticizing "one of ours". We Republicans need to be vocal in our condemation of these acts. If this were a Democrat, our condemnation would be vigorous. Ethics asks that we treat Republican creeps at least as harsh as we do Democrat ones. Sister Toldjah, thanks for bringing this up.

Keefer

It just keeps coming, one debacle after another. So after awhile you become saturated. What can I say?

Posted by: Canadian Observer at April 5, 2006 05:22 PM

At last something sleezier than Clintons humidor.

Beyond partisan politics, is there anything sicker than pedophilia?

Posted by: Ash [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 5, 2006 07:33 PM

Richard,

What are we supposed to do? He's been arrested and he'll be put on trial...we've mentioned it here...I can't see what else is to be done.

Posted by: Mark Noonan [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 5, 2006 08:35 PM

At least we are admitting that the guy is a perv, he needs to be arrested, and we are not making excuses for him.

The CIA once had an agent in its midst driving a brand new Jaguar and didn't figure out something was wrong---it's not like this is first time s bad apple has slipped in. The important thing is, he got caught, and he got arrested, no matter who me was or what he did for a living.

The other important thing is that no conservative is making excuses for him, accusing the cops of just being "out to get him', whining about a "witch hunt" or taking the official position that, after all, it was "just about sex".

Maybe at some point the righties out there will just stop saying how "morally corrupt" the Democrats are.
See this link for some other Republican "morals".
http://www.geocities.com/arthursank/sexualmorality.html

How about this link?
http://quinnell.us/politics/family.html

Just see how many other Republicans had "lapses" or morals.

I wouldn't even bring it up if some posters here didn't bring up Clinton and the cigar or say how Clinton was "too busy getting a BJ to get Osama" etc...etc...etc...etc...

Some posters like Jo will just blame everything on "Slick Willie".
Others like Keefer will just call us kooks and morons.
Noonan will just blame this all on the liberal MSM and how they always report the bad things. If they just report the good things, we would all be happier.

I'm just saying hopefully we no longer have to hear the lame comments about Dems being "morally corrupt"

Posted by: Sick of Lies [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 5, 2006 10:52 PM

How about being "sick of inventions"?

Such as inventing posts about Clinton and his BJs and Osama....

(And besides, Clinton didn't let OBL go because of sex. He just didn't have the manly parts to do the right thing, and was afraid the polls wouldnt' support him. Remember, to Billy Boy terrorism was a lot like robbing a 7-11. You shouldn't do it, but if you did, it was a legal problem, for the cops and lawyers to sort out.)

Typical LibSpeak--invent something, ascribe it to someone who never said anything like it, then be smug about shooting down the nonexistent comment.

Ever so much easier than actually addressing the issue.

No one has said the guy is innocent. No one has said he should be defended. The exact opposite is true.

No one has said that only Dems are nasty. Well, corrupt anyway. Political alignment is no guarantee of moral superiority, for either side. As long as political parties continue to include human beings, all of them will have their fair share of sinners.

My point was that when a conservative gets caught, other conservatives say "Good, we're glad they got the guy. We don't need or want people like that in our party." When a liberal gets caught, you all say "It was a frame-up, it was a witch hunt, you were out to get him, it was spite, it was malice, it was revenge, it was a vast right wing conspiracy, you wanted to get even even with him, you wanted to destroy him---and besides, everyone does it, it's only sex. It's not FAAAAIIIIRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!"

And then you parlay that into a rationale for hating the next conservative to come along---because after all, now he deserves it!

Posted by: Almiranta [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 5, 2006 11:31 PM

He's a democrat, that what was said last night on NBC and ABC News.

Posted by: semby at April 6, 2006 07:29 AM

Almiranta, first of all, I never said YOU specifically said anything of the sort.
HOWEVER... if you read enough posts here, you see those comments about Clinton all the time! Certain posters like Jo and ND constantly bring up Clinton being too busy getting BJs or "using Monica as a humidor".

Posted by: Sick of Lies [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 6, 2006 09:46 AM

You won't read it in the Washington Post or New York Times, at least not yet, but former Department of Homeland Security deputy press secretary Brian J. Doyle is a Democrat.
