The Changing Immigration Reality

Because he seems to be on the exact same page as I am, I quote Glen Reynolds:

I'VE GENERALLY FAVORED OPEN IMMIGRATION, but I find myself feeling less and less that way in the face of mass rallies by illegal immigrants like this one.

Illegal immigrants as individuals just trying to make a better life are sympathetic. Illegal immigrants as a mass movement making demands on the polity are considerably less so.

I'm not the only one to get this impression, as Mickey Kaus's report on the rallies in Los Angeles indicates. I think that these marches just made passage of strict immigration laws much more likely.

I watched some of the footage of the demonstrations today and realised something very important: we probably couldn't get one in a hundred of those demonstrators to actually recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

Like Reynolds, I have been a supporter of a pretty open immigration policy - but I now recognise the absolute necessity of shutting the door, at least for a while. We need time to decide what to do with the 11 or 12 million illegals we have here - do we force them out, or allow them to stay? If they stay, however, then they must assimilate - they must drop their old country like a bad habit and become good Americans.

What we see in the demonstrations are a group of people who want to take advantage of us - and then have the unmitigated gall to get upset when we ask them to obey the house rules. This is a symptom of their contempt for America and for Americans. It is time they learned that this is the United States of America, and it belongs to Americans and no one else.

In my view, the ground is shifting in the immigration debate, and woe to the political Party which misreads the attitude of Americans on this.

I'm listening to Drudge right now--he's interviewing Xavier Hermosa, who, 13 years ago, predicted scenes like what is happening in L.A. right now.

Thanks to our government, we have yet another major problem. Note, donks, that I said our government--both Democrat and Republican. Once again, we've been screwed. If I were a smoker, I'd be lighting up right now...

Posted by: keefer [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 26, 2006 10:25 PM

/Agreed

I just have to add that we have to figure out how to make the immigration process easier and more accessible. So folks can come here legally. Assimilation is also a very big thing and shouldn't be ignored.

Posted by: Gozer [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 26, 2006 10:25 PM

Keefer,

Well, people get the government they deserve, and they usually get it good and hard...

We have been rather slack, too...all of us quite happy for the low cost farming and drywall installing...

Things are changing - I think the massive demonstrations are backfiring...actually bringing to light what most people ignored, but now cannot ignore any longer.

Posted by: Mark Noonan [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 26, 2006 10:31 PM

I don't know about backfiring. The Demorats are against border security, so I don't think they'll help pass a bill similar to the House's legislation. I think the Repbicrats, such as McFeeble, Spectator, and McFeeble Light, will be scared to do anything.

I just don't know what you can do with all those illegals to send them back home.

Posted by: Tina at March 26, 2006 10:34 PM

There is hope. My sister who is fairly Liberal is as upset over this issue as I have ever seen. She is in Eastern TN, has not voted for a Republican, shoot she even voted for Nader in 2000, Kerry in 2004. Nothing I ever said to her made any difference in her voting selection. She called me yesterday and she wasn't happy with all the Mexico flags a flying at these protest rally's.

We shall see - middle America is fed up I know I am and so is everyone I know - Mexican's raping a 11 year old girl in Hamilton Ohio and then running back to Mexico. Broke my arm in January, you would have thought I was in Mexico with all of them in the emergency room. I asked the nurse who I knew from high school how many of them had insurance, she just gave me that look and said almost everyone of them guess who pays for that

Like I said, middle America is fed-up and I am of the opinion that any political party that can come up with a solution will rule for years to come

Posted by: vero at March 26, 2006 11:20 PM

We need time to decide what to do with the 11 or 12 million illegals we have here - do we force them out, or allow them to stay?

We don't force them out; we adopt stringent laws hammering those who employ non-legal residents. When the illegal job market dries up, illegals will self-deport.

Posted by: clark smith at March 27, 2006 01:26 AM

Wow vero...at least you're unbashed in your racism. Well done.

Poor you that all those Mexicans in the E.R. were cause delays in a *real* human being like you.

Time to change the text on Lady Liberty's tablet?

Posted by: GodOfBiscuits [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 27, 2006 02:14 AM

Biscuits,

How is it racist to merely point out that illegals place an undue burden on our emergency medical system?

Vero wasn't saying they should have been kicked out of the ER until he got treated - he was merely pointing out that if we enforced our immigration laws, then the ER wouldn't have been as burdened as it was...

The plain fact of the matter these days is that the illegals have contempt for us - they consider it their right to come into this country any time they please...my eyes were opened by the Mexican flags flying at the demonstrations...those are aliens, daring to demonstrate in MY country? I beg your parden, but Mexicans may protest in Mexico all they want - here they should show some respect for their hosts.

Posted by: Mark Noonan [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 27, 2006 02:28 AM

"Poor you that all those Mexicans in the E.R. were cause delays in a *real* human being like you."

(sigh) Where did I say it caused a delay in my treatment? Well done, you obviously have a Public education, as you cannot understand what you read.

Posted by: vero at March 27, 2006 07:49 AM

Racism isn't the issue here or in most law enforcement areas. The U.S. has laws to be enforced whoever violates them. Let's have a moratorium on the use of the word racist.

Posted by: John Leach at March 27, 2006 08:16 AM

How is it racist to merely point out that illegals place an undue burden on our emergency medical system?

C'mon Mark, you of all people should realize that if you oppose non-white people coming to your country illegally, and breaking more laws once they get here, then you're a racist.

Biscuit-brain, and his band of Murthas, are benevolent, compassionate human beings who should be hailed as the cream of society. Bow down, son, bow down!!!

Posted by: keefer [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 27, 2006 08:46 AM

G.O.B.

One thing is certain, anytime liberals don't have real justification for their position (as is frequently the case) we can look forward to their usual claims that others are racist, profilers, prejudice, bigoted, anti-humanitarian, insensitive, uncaring, etc., etc., etc. All of this in hopes of making their opponents feel guilty or to demean their character and intentions in hopes of diverting others and potential supporters from the real issue!!!

As to the illegal aliens, they are exactly that ILLEGAL... it doesn't matter whether they are Mexicans, Canadians, Europeans, Asians, or terrorists. We don't need to call them by one of the liberal's politically correct terms like "undocumented workers" either. If they aren't here legally, then they are here ILLEGALLY and are BREAKING OUR LAWS. Either enforce the laws or change them, but don't attempt to make Americans (liberals excluded) feel guilty for wanting these laws enforced.

Liberals want to censure President Bush because they "think" he may be breaking a law by "their definition"... yet, liberals want to give all illegal aliens a free pass! Talk about hypocrisy and double standards...

There is no requirement for Americans to be "Good Samaritans" and allow illegal aliens to break our laws as apparently Hillary Clinton would like us to "believe". If that's the case, why don't we just release all of the prisoners from all of our prisons! Why keep them in jail when we are letting all of the illegal aliens blatantly break the laws? And why prosecute Wal-Mart for hiring some of these same illegal workers that the liberals want to allow into our country by the millions?

Do we really need to bring in millions of illegal workers to do our work? Let's take a HARD look at our liberal welfare system too before we allow millions of illegal workers in to do the work that Americans WILL NOT do. Most Americans don't want to work, but they do to earn a living and support those who don't or won't work. Let's put some of these "welfare careerists" to work.

...And for all of you liberals who will immediately claim foul and start with your character assassination -- I'm not talking about those who REALLY and TRULY need "some" welfare support... but anyone who has their eyes open knows there are many, many who should be working -- whether THEY like it or not.

And let's not put an even bigger burden on America's working taxpayers and permit illegal workers into America so they can file for welfare and medical benefits at the taxpayer's expense!!!

There are literally billions of needy, deserving people around the world who "need" America's help and who will flood into our country if we allow it!

Just what America does not need... more people on our over burdened welfare and health care system, and illegal ones to boot!

For those of you who do not recognize it... open you eyes and look squarely into the face of liberalism!!!

Posted by: AAR at March 27, 2006 09:32 AM

Agreed.

It is interesting to consider: 100s of thousands of protesters - 500,000 in LA, reportedly - demonstrating/demanding more favourable laws towards Illegal Aliens...that do NOT have the power of the vote. Hmmmm. Normally, politicians will be swayed by public demonstrations when they are particularly large in numbers, but what about when these individuals do not have a vote? This is why I think your article (including Glen's piece) is so accurate: if the Illegal Aliens are not speaking to their Elected Officials then they are trying to intimidate all of the branches of the US Government as well all American Citizens.

The fact is that there are millions of people around the world that are following the rules, who have applied for Legal Work Visas and Legal Immigration to the United States. It is just not fair to the law abiding folks, who have been patiently standing in line, for the USA to allow the law breakers to fill the Immigration Spots of those that are waiting their turn.

Posted by: RPaine at March 27, 2006 10:01 AM

Illegal is illegal!

For crying out loud, if you break the laws to get into this country, you're not "undocumented", you're not a "guest worker", you're not an "immigrant", you're a criminal, and should be trated as such.

Kick them all out!

No, I don't care what it will do to the economy, I don't care about their familes, and I don't care what they will do for a living!

They should have thought of that before they came to OUR country demanding we provide them a living.

Don't like it? Tough luck. Life's not fair. Live by the rules, and you'll make it. Go around them, and pay the consequences.

Kick them all out!

If we don't control our borders, we will have no country left.

And the co-called "anchor babies" should be outlawed. If you come here illegally and have a kid, you and the kid go back, the kid is not automatically a citizen.

Sorry if this seems harsh, but I've had it.

You come into my house, you treat me and my family with respect and decency and obey the rules. If you don't, I have every right (and obligation to my family) to kick you out the door, and only let you back in if you agree to my terms.

If you don't like it, tough.

I am very opposed to any amnesty for the 10 – 12 million immigrants who are currently breaking our laws. It has been stated that they are taking jobs American don’t want. This may have been the case in the past, but not now. Statistics I have estimated that 16% of illegals are working in agriculture. That means that somewhere between 8.4 and 10 million are working in other jobs that Americans would take. The illegal’s have depressed the wages for those jobs and keep the bottom rung of American workers from making a living wage.

Illegal’s in our society benefits only employers. Everyone else pays the bill in increased costs for schools, car insurance, election ballots, closed emergency rooms at hospitals and welfare for those who can’t afford to live on entry level jobs.

There is much discussion about fairness. Let’s look at the statistics. The number of legal immigrants from Mexico is about 175,000 per year. This is more than most other countries. If only 75 % of the illegals in the US are Mexicans then the number is conservatively 7.5 million. If we want to be fair to the citizens of the rest of the world, we should stop all visas to Mexican citizens for (7,500,000 / 175,000 =) 42.8 years. This would make up for those that have cheated the system and represents the magnitude of the problem.

I am not anti-immigrant! My mother came from Canada and my wife and daughter from Russia. Everyone that comes here wants a better life for themselves and their family. My step daughter was over twenty one when my wife came to America and had to wait for a family visa on the quota system. She is college educated and speaks Russian, English and French. She would be very employable. She has waited 5 years and will probably wait another 5 years. Why should others go ahead of her just because they can jump a fence or swim a river? Most immigrants do not put their native country ahead of the USA. You don’t see Russians or Canadians or Brits marching and waiving the flag of their former country. If you saw the TV coverage of the march in Los Angeles last Saturday you saw flags from many South American Countries and Mexico. They don’t care about our country, they just want money to send home.

It’s time we enforced the laws on the books and stopped giving birth citizenship to those that are here illegally. Heavy fines for employers and rewards to those that report them should be the new policy. It’s easy for an employer to check to see if the name on a social security card matches what’s in the Social Security system.

I agree with many on this subject. Let's come up with a way to get the illegal immigrants out. And yes, illegal is ILLEGAL. What part of illegal is right and just? None of it.
I live out here in southern california and honestly, I'm quite sick of paying for them, having to live around their crap, and putting myself out so they can get everything for free. Sure, some of them work, but if you live out here you'll understand what I'm talking about. I've lived in many apartment complexes. About 3 years ago, I moved because the management of the complex were all Asian ( which specific one, I have no idea or care to) and 90% of the complex had asian residents and was growing every day. One of my neighbors before they moved told me he was moving his family out because he was one of about 10 non illegal immigrant families living there. He also told me that he could never get any kind of response from the Management there when ever he had problems. While living there, all of my neighbors on every side had at least 7 - 12 people in each unit. Causing problems such as laundry rooms always full, no parking anywhere, and the complex going to crap. At this point, I have to pay more to live in a place that is not overrun by immigrants. To me, that is extremely frustrating.
It's disgusting to hear these people complain that they aren't getting the rights they want or deserve. How the heck do they deserve them if they're not legally elidgeble for them?
I watched on ABC last night one of the rallys going on in LA. They were interviewing a lady that said, I'm an illegal immigrant and I want my rights. My question is, where the hell was the legal enforcement? If you have a bunch of illegal immigrants standing together in one place, why not arrest them all and send them back? Are we really that relaxed on it?
It's very difficult living here in southern California seeing this happen and living around it every day. I know there are people who are trying to become citizens the correct way, and I praise them. I hope they get it sooner than later. But for those who jump the fence and expect insurance, food, residence, and jobs without any resistance....they can kiss my behind. I don't work every day, pay taxes everyday, wonder how much money I have to spend on my own family to pay for those lazy people.
Ozemc - I'm right there with ya!!!
If you can't come to this country, the correct way, learn the CORRECT language, treat MY country with respect, and be greatful for the freedoms you are given - GET THE HELL OUT.

AAR & Ozemc good posts. People who are here
ILLEGALLY, are just that-'ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS'.
When do They, get to say, that we have to let them
into OUR country? They Don't-and neither do their
'bleeding heart liberal/Mexican Groups/etc., get to "tell us, what laws are to be followed, and which ones they can break-especially that old rhetoric/tired line: "The Mexicans only come here to make $$ for their families, and do the work that Americans won't do" That's tired, real
tired. I don't give one damn, if lettuce goes to
$3 a head-let the "American/welfare recipients do
that work....there should be NO FREE RIDES.

We that have illegals here, that have to 'pick up the tabs'(For medical alone), should'nt have to suffer for trauma centers that are being closed
daily, because the illegals "Don't Pay"-

When they come across our borders(with Terrorists
among them hiding to get in) to drop a kid, and
continue to use Medical, Schooling, All it does it bankrupt our systems. I SAY, NO GO.

Just think about this-If you try to get into Mexico and set up shop-YOU WILL BE PUT IN JAIL.
They have their army on their Southern borders, so
as to protect their border,(and usually let in the
money paying customers from S.America, looking the
other way, as they may pass through the border)
YET, Vicente Fox, and the rest, "OBJECT" to our saying our borders need to be closed. Talk about
a 'double standard'.

If the bleeding heart liberals posting here, want
to have them continue to overrun the country, and
think we should 'just open up to anyone and every
one, then they should take them into "their homes
and take care of them financially, and sponser them for citizenship"....bet it would be another
story then, cause these types, NEVER put their money where their mouths are.

Frankly, I'm tired of my taxes being put into taking care of them and theirs'...they don't want
to become legalized for many reasons, not the least of them being-"When you are a citizen, you
MUST PAY YOUR FAIR SHARE OF TAXES-These people
Don't, and yet they send monies back to Mexico to
other family members, amounting to billions of $$$
and 'ADD TO VICENTE FOX'S COFFERS'...Which I have
never understood, why HE, doesn't develop all the
natural resources of Mexico, and add to his OWN
WORK FORCE, AND KEEP THEM DOWN THERE.

Posted by: Jo [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 27, 2006 08:46 PM

Another point if I may:

In these marches, are they carrying "The American
Flag?" No, because they have no alligience to
our Country, only to Mexico-and they think THIS,
is going to change our minds'...I think not.
It is because of 'Mexico First', that we have much
more expenses, such as having to educate in Mexican, and print all forms, etc.-ALL at LEGAL
TAXPAYERS EXPENSE.

Posted by: Jo [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 27, 2006 08:50 PM

You don't think "one is a hundred could recite the Pledge of Allegiance"? How about one in the entire group.

For decades, Mexicans have been slipping across the border and trying to disappear into American society. Maybe they came here to work the fields and just never went home. But they assimilated. The difference now is that they are demanding to be allowed to create a "Little Mexico" right here in our country---a Spanish-speaking, Mexican-cultured, often anit-American, subculture. When we allow a subculture like that to flourish, one that is based on breaking our laws in the first place, we are asking for trouble.

I'm not a Bill O'Reilly fan, but the other night he presented a nine or ten step plan to deal with immigration that was almost exacly what I have been saying all along.

First, block the border so no one can get through. Next, give a deadline of two months or six months or something in between for all illegals to register. Any found here after that time WILL go to jail and then WILL be sent home, never to return. Failure to sign up would be met by strong measures.

Next, fine all illegals for breaking our law. Guess what? Crossing the border illegally is a MISDEMEANOR. So a fine would be appropriate. I said $2500, Bill said $3000. Enough to make a difference to a struggling family, not enough to wipe them out. I also suggsted some coummuntiy service. Mom and Dad are both illegal? Dad gets his fine paid off and then it's Mom's turn.

Break US laws here? Back to Mexico. But if you have been legal while here, aside from the crossing thing, then you can apply for permanent residency after your fine is paid off.

Expedite the burdensome process in Immigration, speed it up, but also demand that people have to speak English to apply for a green card. No English, no green card, no residence in the U.S. Give a two year window after registration to apply for permanent residency.

Temporary drivers' licenses ONLY for those waiting for green cards. (And yes, I know they're pink now, but will always be called 'green cards') If the temporary residence allowed by registration expires without application for permanent residency, and passing an English test, it's back to Mexico.

All registered aliens have to work, and pay taxes. The privileges of citizenship will never be respected if they are not earned.

Only those achieving citizenship can vote. Period. And they are Americans now, no dual citizenship.

It would be a slow, messy, and sometimes painful process, for about ten years. But after that, some things would be established.

1. If you want to come to this country, you have to respect its laws
2. If you want to live here, you have to speak our language. If you can't function well enough in English to take a drivers' test, then you should not be driving.
3. We are a compassionate nation, open to the less fortunate---WHEN AND IF they respect us, respect our laws, and are willing to be come Americans

Posted by: Almiranta [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 28, 2006 10:02 AM

Look to the Left for a lot of the problem.

1. Colorado tried to pass a resolution stating that "English is the official language of the State of Colorado". The Left branded it as the "English ONLY law" and had poor Mexicans convinced that an overheard "Que pasa?" in the supermarket would land them in jail. It was blatant manipulation of the truth to further divide one group from another, the only way the Left can possibly hang on to any power at all, but it did a lot of damage to the efforts to organize the immigration/language problems.

2. Hillary, in yet another anti-Bush rant, complained that the "poor" were "disenfranchised" because "there were not enough translators at the polling places to allow non-English speakers to vote". Huh?? Since when can people who are not citizens vote? And since when can you gain citizenship without being able to speak English?

But her speech, and countless others like it, all from the Left, have convinced people that merely living in this country entitles them to the same rights and privileges that are supposed to be for citizens.

It works, though---the vast majority of those non-English speaking voters would vote Democratic, because that would be the party that gave them the vote in the first place, legal or not.

Posted by: Almiranta [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 28, 2006 10:11 AM

Almiranta.....both posts are on the money. You
put it all into proper perspective...If these
Democrats keep pandering for votes(be they illegal
or not-they don't care) especially Hillary, who
constantly panders with her "desire for power"
they are 'selling out legal Americans, that are "always left with picking up the tab"...

Posted by: Jo [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 28, 2006 03:16 PM

Yeah, citizens speaking out for our country. I have waited for so long. Mexicans (pardon me, Hispanics whatever that blend is) don't speak English because they don't want to. Go in a Walmart and you think you are in a foreign country, jabber, jabber, jabber. All the little kids speak Spanish and just where do they go to school? Not here in Missouri, we don't have any Spanish speaking schools. So this says they don't go at all and will never assimilate. I am so sick of this krap, CLOSE THE DARN BORDER, before it is too late if it already isn't. And Repubs better read these signals right or they deserve what they get!!!!

Posted by: Judith at March 28, 2006 11:12 PM

"had poor Mexicans convinced that an overheard "Que pasa?" in the supermarket would land them in jail."

Where can you verify this? All Mexicans? 75% of the Mexicans? Or maybe your uncle Fester overheard a similar exchange in the supermarket between some radical looking, latte sipping yuppie and an elderly Latino name Luis?

Posted by: Ash [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 29, 2006 01:15 AM

"We need time to decide what to do with the 11 or 12 million illegals we have here

Mark this problem would be solved quickly if we fined and fined heftily the employers that are hiring the illegals. They are here for the jobs and I don't blame them if they want to work. The criminals are the employers.
