The difference, john, is that torture is already illegal under existing law and regulations applicable to our armed forces.
McCain's anti-torture measure is vague and ambiguous and would serve only to give AQ terrorists an additional club to use in any effort to convince a US Court to interfere with the conduct of the war.
And by being so vague and ambiguous, McCain's measure works to make that interference far more likely.
Symbolism solely for symbolism's sake is foolishness.

The one thing that seems to be missing from all the posts from those criticizing the use of torture by the U.S. is the citing of specific types of torture and proof of when and where it's being used. And no, posts from DU and KOS and underwear on the head don't count as proof. How about it guys? Although not a soldier, I have spoken to many who would agree that what Senator McCain is doing is ensuring that our soldiers never have to compromise themselves in order to serve their country. I agree with S.B. that it seems as though Sen. McCain's article was not thoroughly read through before comments were made. The "Virtuous Warrior" is not dead, and hopefully never will be no matter how unconscionable the actions of our enemies. To wish it otherwise is to shake the foundation of what this country stands for. Let's finish this fight, but let's finish it the right way.

I reviewed my comments to you Jo, and can't find any indication of personal attack toward you from me. I assumed you are a Vietnam War veteran based on how liberally you utilized the term "nam". I am unaware of any name calling I directed at you in my comments to you relative to Gov. Romney. My name calling, and I still stand by it and so should everyone on this blog, is directed at that IDIOT Tom who blatently discredits Senator McCain's service to our country while he's sitting plush and pretty in his little university office getting serviced by coeds who need an "A". I am surprised at the lack of intelligence shown by this thread. It's obvious that the reason we have such a knucklehead for a president is that our country contains about 65% total dumbasses.
