I'm not aware that President Bush disagrees with McCain. I've heard him say numerous times that he opposes torture and would never approve of it under any circumstances. So, whose side is the Pres. on -- your's or McCain's?

The difference, john, is that torture is already illegal under existing law and regulations applicable to our armed forces.

McCain's anti-torture measure is vague and ambiguous and would serve only to give AQ terrorists an additional club to use in any effort to convince a US Court to interfere with the conduct of the war.

And by being so vague and ambiguous, McCain's measure works to make that interference far more likely.

Symbolism solely for symbolism's sake is foolishness.

The one thing that seems to be missing from all the posts from those criticizing the use of torture by the U.S. is the citing of specific types of torture and proof of when and where it's being used. And no, posts from DU and KOS and underwear on the head don't count as proof. How about it guys? Surely if you're going to argue intelligently about an issue, you ought to, at the very least, have some kind of proof that the issue exists.

As an Arizona Democrat, I only say that I love all this anti-McCain stuff on the right-- we have a Democratic governor with a 70% approval rating, seems headed to an easy re-election next year, and is term limited in 2010, which by coincidence is when McCain is next up for re-election to the Senate.

McCain is a STAUNCH supporter of the war in Iraq and to claim differently is just plain ignorance. Check your facts.
Mitt Romney will be lucky to get reelected to his current gig and to think that a Romney/Racicot team is a winning ticket is proof #3 that you have no idea what you're speaking of. Go to your local supermarket and ask 10 people if they've ever heard of either one and you'll hit 0-10.

I am a soldier who just returned home from Iraq, who considers himself conservative, and I'm thoroughly embarrassed about most of the above comments who insult Senator McCain. I wonder if everyone actually read the full article; to say he's pandering to Liberals is complete hogwash. In my opinion a true patriot will never stoop to the level of our enemies, in act or in philosophy. The world is watching American soldiers and American citizens alike, and we will be judged by what we do and say. If we are a great nation we should behave like one, strive to be the most moral and just nation we can. Solid values mean nothing if they don't have conscience and decency behind them at all times.

Although not a soldier, I have spoken to many who would agree that what Senator McCain is doing is ensuring that our soldiers never have to compromise themselves in order to serve their country. I agree with S.B. that it seems as though Sen. McCain's article was not thoroughly read through before comments were made. The "Virtuous Warrior" is not dead, and hopefully never will be no matter how unconscionable the actions of our enemies. To wish it otherwise is to shake the foundation of what this country stands for. Let's finish this fight, but let's finish it the right way.
