The blogger conference call with Ken Mehlman on the nomination of Judge Alito just ended... It went very well... Bloggers were greeted by RNC eCampaign director Patrick Ruffini, who explained that conference calls such as this one was part of their effort to engage the blogopshere in the nomination process. RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman came on shortly after and told us he appreciated the work bloggers were doing. On Alito, he explained that this is the most experienced nominee we've seen in 70 years, and that his character and philosphy is consistent with what the president said it should be, that judges should interpret the law, not make law...
He also warned us to expected partisan attacks... which I'm sure all of us anticipated anyway. He said to remember what happened with Judge Roberts, and how his membership in the Federalist Society was scrutinized, and the New York Times intention to look into the adoption records of Roberts' children.
Tim Chapman of TownHall.com asked about the possibility of a filibuster. Chairman Mehlman responded saying that he hopes the Democrats don't filibuster, and noted how hard it would be for the Democrats to justify a filibuster on someone who they had in the past unanimously confirmed...
Bulldog Pundit asked if the Senate Republicans would invoke the constitutional option if the Democrats filibustered. Mehlman said he is confident the Republican will if the Democrats do filibuster.
I got to ask the last question. I asked, "Comparing the nomination of Miers to the nomination of Judge Alito, Bush went from a stealth nominee to a known conservative with a lengthy track record. Does this mean that Bush realizes his previous strategy was wrong?" Mehlman responded saying he doesn't believe Bush has nominated stealth nominees. He said he didn't believe Roberts was a stealth nominee, or Harriet Miers for that matter, and explained that ush is committed to nominating judges with a strict constitutionalist philsophy.
Well, I may not agree that Roberts and Miers weren't stealth nominees, but I figured it was worth a shot to ask...
UPDATE: Also on the call, Decision '08...

Dubya has often taken the middle road to avoid a fight. I think it may be a residual mentality from the closeness of the 2000 election. I hope that this bold choice marks a new fearlessness by this administration to DO THE RIGHT THING (with acknowledgement to the little puke Spike Lee who popularized that phrase), roll up the sleeves, and get the US mainstream (i.e., CONSERVATIVE) agenda moving!!!
The Conservatives and Republicans control the White House, the Senate and the Congress... That is called POWER and if Pres. Bush doesn't have the where to's to actually USE that power to better the USA, maybe he needs to give that power to someone that will...
This is a historic time for Mr. Bush and he can do much to mend fences with Conservatives right now, but he is going to have to actually DO IT...
Alito is a great start... Now Mr. President, shove it down the Dems throats and USE that MAJORITY you have in Congress and the Senate and look to the future for our kids and grand kids as we ALL work to get Judge Alito approved...
Perhaps NOW Pat Ruffini can put together a Coalition of the Chillin'! This nomination is a home run!
