Confirm Judge Alito

President George W. Bush to nominate Samuel Alito for Supreme Court...

Well, I was admittedly not thrilled with Harriet Miers for the Supreme Court, Judge Alito, however, I can say is a good pick, and I am sure conservatives will support this nomination. It's time to start a coalition...

If you're a blogger and you support the nomination of Samuel A. Alito, you can join the Coalition to Confirm Alito by linking to and tracking back this post, or leaving a comment in the comment threads...

UPDATE: Alito biographical information over at GOP Bloggers... Continued coverage at GOP Bloggers.

UPDATE, 7:56 AM EST: On Fox News they're saying Reid is disappointed that Bush didn't nominate someone mentioned by the Democrats.

Reid statement:

"I am disappointed in this choice for several reasons. First, unlike previous nominations, this one was not the product of consultation with Senate Democrats. Last Friday, Senator Leahy and I wrote to President Bush urging him to work with us to find a consensus nominee. The President has rejected that approach.

You want a fight, Senator Reid? Bring it on!

Reid must think consultation with the Democrats means that Bush has to nominate someone they approve of...

Well, I'm glad that Democrats don't approve of Alito. Bush and Alito will be up shortly...

UPDATE, 8:01 AM EST: Bush is up. Expects Alito to be confirmed by the end of the year.

UPDATE, 8:07 AM EST: Alito speaks...

UPDATE: They Said It! ... Sign the petition...

UPDATE: A filibuster will not stand... Frist says, "If the Democrats are looking for a fight, we'll be up for the fight. We won't back down... We're gonna get an up or down vote on the Senate floor and if the Democrats want a fight, they'll get one." Amen!

UPDATE: Contact Republicans in the Gang of 14 and "make sure they know that Samuel Alito is not an 'extraordinary circumstance.'"

UPDATE: Samuel Alito: A Judge Not Recommended By Harry Reid

UPDATE: The Sloppy Seconds Syndicate???

UPDATE, 1:02 PM EST: Having a bit of a problem with trackbacks.. For now, bloggers joining the coalition should post a comment in this blog entry...

UPDATE: What Now? has a great suggestion...

Samuel Alito is an absolutely excellent choice for the Supreme Court. In the immediate aftermath of his nomination, I suggest every person who thinks Alito is an improvement over Miers should call the Republican National Committee and donate and tell the person you talk to that you're donating because of the Alito-for-Miers swap. It doesn't matter if you donate only $5! The point is to let the Republican leadership know that if they make us happy, we'll make them happy.

The Republican National Committee's telephone number is 202-863-8500. UPDATE: You may also use the RNC's web donation form. If you do, be sure to also send an e-mail to info@gop.com to let them know why you donated. A veteran fundraiser has suggested the following: ADD NINE CENTS to whatever you plan to give. That will allow an easy tally of the pro-Alito donations. So if you're going to give $5, give $5.09. If you're going to give $20, give $20.09. Doing this is ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL to the effort.

UPDATE, 3:44 PM EST: In about 15 minutes I'll be participating in a Blogger Conference Call with RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman on the Alito Nomination... Should be very interesting..

UPDATE: Conference Call report...

UPDATE, 5:47 PM EST: Still having a problem with trackbacks... If you'd joining the coalition please link to this post anyway and I'll catch you on Technorati...

UPDATE, 6:43 PM EST: Just missed out on an opportunity to debate the Alito nomination with Jeralyn Merritt on BBC World Service Radio... I didn't get the voicemail in time before they had to schedule something else... Oh well... Hopefully another opportunity will come again soon...

UPDATE: According to BlogPulse, the third most-linked-to blog entry in the blogosphere yesterday.

UPDATE: All Things Beautiful is asking bloggers to join forces in Scalitovision 2005...

UPDATE: Bloggers can put one of these graphics (posted in the extended entry) on their blogs:

I am so thankful that President Bush has nominated a true Conservative who has stood up to the anti-american, anti-christian organization, the ACLU.

Posted by: Oscar Broome Jr at October 31, 2005 07:22 AM

Alito is a far more qualified candidate than Miers. This nominee is obviously qualified by any objective standard, though te liberals will scream for a filibuster.

Frankly, I say "bring it."

This nomination will break the "Gang of 14," because if any of the Republcans vote against such an obviously qualified jurist, his or her career (and his presidential aspirations, Mr. McCain) is all but over.

Alito passes, the Gang of 14 is humbled, and we get to watch Kos, Armando, Aravosis, stc have a nervous breakdown.

A "win" across the board.

Posted by: Confederate Yankee at October 31, 2005 07:50 AM

I have the ACLU v. Schundler site linked at my blog if anyone wants to read the opinions.

Posted by: BobG at October 31, 2005 07:53 AM

Yippee!! A "conservative's conservative" nominee...sort of sounds like Jesse Helms. I can't wait for all of you pseudo-Christian moralists to fall all over yourselves demanding a dignified confirmation process for Alito so soon after you stoned poor Harriet Miers to death in the Rose Garden.

Posted by: phil at October 31, 2005 07:56 AM

I think this is a great choice. I'd rather have seen Janice Rogers Brown, but I can live with Alito...especially since we saw the immediate reaction to him from the left. Must have hit a nerve.

Posted by: Brian at October 31, 2005 08:14 AM

So Reid is upset because Bush didn't choose from the Dems' list.

Well, he did with Miers, which clearly demonstrates that Reid has no idea of what a qualified jurist is; so his opinions of an acceptable SCOTUS nominee can be ignored.

Posted by: Hermie [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 31, 2005 08:21 AM

College Conservative Movement joins the Confirm Alito Coalition! This was a strong pick. Bush is the man!

Posted by: Chad at October 31, 2005 08:25 AM

Hey Hermie, I think what Reid is most upset about is the consistent ability of the right to distract red-state knuckle-draggers with social issues while simultaneously screwing them on fiscal issues. Here, maybe you and your patriotic buddies should read this:

All you so-called conservatives surely know that they dont come much more conservative than the Cato Institute, at least on fiscal policy. Well the Cato Institute has concluded that George W. Bush and the Republican Congressional Majority has been viciously screwing you, me and every other ordinary American. Dont take my word for it, read the article yourself, if you have the stomach for it.

Phil . . . your comments have absolutely nothing to do with the subject of this thread, but they are typical of the left's obtuse, nonsensical reasoning abilities and political strategies. As for Reid, he's simply a mouthpiece for radical left . . . nothing more, nothing less.

Posted by: rplat at October 31, 2005 08:54 AM

A nomination in the likes of Scalia--tremendous. Alito has more judicial experience than any nominee in the past 70 years. He has an established conservative record. Democrats and Republicans unanimously confirmed him for the US Court of Appeals; but, expect the fight of our lives this time.

Bring It On!

Since they are crying and bitchen over at the DailyKos, then that is a clear sign that Bush hit this one out of the park.

Posted by: Andy at October 31, 2005 09:35 AM

I guess this blog doesn't like my trackbacks... Anyway, I'm optimistic about this nomination and hope we get more unanimous support among conservatives for Judge Alito...

Posted by: Jeremiah Stoddard at October 31, 2005 09:52 AM

Rplat beat me to the punch responding to Phil's irrelevant comments. I must say it didn't take much "stomach" to read the Cato article, and Phil is preaching to the choir in decrying the spendathon that Congress and the President have been on. I don't think Phil will find too many who read and comment on this blog who will defend the spending of this administration, but I'll bet Phil would defend it if it were Democrats doing the spending. Congressman Mike Pence (from the Indiana district just south of mine) is leading the fiscal responsibility movement in Congress, a movement that is starting to gain some traction. I think many in the Republican leadership are starting to see the handwriting on the wall; at least I hope so.

Back to the topic of this thread. I was one of the few who was willing to cut Harriet Miers and the President some slack, at least until the Judiciary Committee hearings. Now I'm beginning to think that Miers may have been nothing more than a Trojan horse. From everything I've read this morning, Alito sounds like a brilliant pick. Sen. Schummer says Alito's nomination will divide the country. I'm thinking the only people it's going to divide are Democrats.

An up or down vote. Just like Miers

Posted by: shortz at October 31, 2005 10:26 AM

Alito is a nominee I can get behind and support... The Republicans have control of the White House, the Senate and the Congress, use it Mr. President, this is an opportunity to mold the USSC and make history, please don't waste it, use the control we have for the GOOD of America...

Posted by: TexasFred at October 31, 2005 11:43 AM

Thank God, for THIS nomination....They have already started to Bash, with the likes of Reid,
who can't find his ass in the dark-to Schumer, already 'dusting things up'...he never met a camera he didn't like. They are gearing up folks
and WE NEED TO AS WELL.

I read on Drudge, about John Roberts of CBS-at a meeting disrespectfully referring to Alito, as
"Sloppy Seconds"...if you are as disgusted as I am
with this "bias, leftist slant on the MSM", if I may suggest-do what I just did this morning...I sent an email showing my disgust at his type swipe
(since they DID NOT do it with liberal Ginsberg)
to CBS News, N.Y. and here is the fax number to
send it to Les Moonves, Pres. at CBS (323)653-8276

The MSM, need to know, that unless they start to report the news, NOT SLANT IT-they continue to lose much of their audience share, as we, have other options. Mr. Moonves, etal, need to remember what the outrage was after "Rathergate"

Make the call folks....this is the only way, to get them to TRY to go to the "middle of the road when reporting"

And I have this linked on all 3 of my sites as well, we MUST make the Senators understand, they work for US, not vice versa...

The more sites to link this the better...

And NEVER doubt the power of a small Forum or Blog...

I'm starting to see how (Matt or Mark) is right... a picture can be as much (or more) of a lie that it is of the truth.

Check out the lower picture on this page.

Doesn't this make him look like a vicious individual about to attack someone?

They do the same thing with Bush all the time... take bunches of pictures, and choose the one in which his expression makes him look the worst. I'll often see odd emotions ascribed to such photos... they don't seem to realize that just about everyone looks weird if you snap a still of someone when they're in the middle of talking.

Posted by: LNC [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 31, 2005 12:54 PM

I'm delighted to see someone like Alito nominated. Let's get the O'Connor vote secured, then if the Pres wants to put a Gonzaleez on the Court we could probably live with that. This will be battle but I see Alito being confirmed with as many votes as Roberts got, if not more. There will probably be more lefty caterwauling than Roberts had to endure, but that's OK. Bring it on.

This is not the what Reagan or Bush I or the conservative/practical party I once knew. Mean is mean ...

I do miss Howard Baker and the rest of the reasoned right..

WASHINGTON (AP) -- House Republicans voted to cut student loan subsidies, child support enforcement and aid to firms hurt by unfair trade practices as various committees scrambled to piece together $50 billion in budget cuts.

I wonder how many hours and/or days it will take for Kennedy to flip-flop on his prior support of Alito?

Posted by: Carl at October 31, 2005 02:19 PM

This is great news. Mr. Alito is said to be to "have a record that shows a commitment to a strict interpretation of the Constitution." The Democrats are already trying to label him as an extremists, but I welcome the fight. Now that President Bush has stepped up and picked a true conservative, the Republicans must not waver and fight for Alito in the Senate. If the Democrats filibuster and the Republicans have to use the "nuclear option" then so be it

Posted by: KeepinItReal at October 31, 2005 02:20 PM

Wow, sounds like this is going to be a great fight in the Senate. Now, we just need to make sure we let our Senators know that we mean business with this, and that we will accept no compromises.

Posted by: Brandon at October 31, 2005 02:53 PM

This is the best news I've heard since the Miers withdrawal.

Alito is the type of Justice we need.

Posted by: Anthony at October 31, 2005 03:03 PM

Congrads, Mr. President.

The President got it right on today with his nomination to the Supreme Court. Samuel "Scalito" Alito is sure to give a change of direction to the Court. This nominee has a surefire record which we all can look back upon and say (with relief) wow, he's conservative. Now sure, maybe the Dems will put up a fight... but theres always the nuclear option.

Posted by: Kevin at October 31, 2005 03:06 PM

Gee, all these comments, and only one from a donky-donk troll? And phil, you need to try harder to mask the talking points. In other words: Come back later when yuou're no longer stuck on stupid!!!

Go, go, Alito!!!

Phone should be ringing anyyyyy minute now donation + .09 cents

We conservatives are back in the game

Heck, we are the game

YAY! Now Borkito will help the court roll environmental and workplace regulations back to the way they were 100 years ago! So in addition to having the costs for the colossal orgy of Republican spending passed onto our children and grandchildren their environment and places of work will be more dangerous! Thanks God for the Republican Revolution!

This is the problem with consulting with these (destroyers of good for power)characters. They'll never accept what they want anyway, so why cater to them?
Christ never invited, nor did He consult, with Satan before the Sermon on the Mount!
These people will use every act of decency and kindness as a weapon against you. They are to be trusted to do exactly that, and nothing less.
Never trust a liberal to do good and you'll never be disappointed!

I signed the petition, but with Dick "The Military is Like the Nazi's" Durbin and Barack "Osamah" Obama as my senators, it's not likely to sway their votes.
