How many of Rumsfeld’s critics can say they went into harm’s way to visit troops in Iraq?

U.S. Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld visited wounded soldiers and brought holiday greetings on Christmas Eve amid tight security at an air base in northern Iraq where an insurgent’s attack killed 14 U.S. troops and eight other people earlier this week.
Hoping to demonstrate compassion for the troops’ sacrifices, Rumsfeld landed in darkness and walked immediately from his plane to a combat surgical hospital where many of the bombing victims were treated after Tuesday’s lunchtime attack on a mess tent. The most seriously wounded already have been transferred to a U.S. military hospital in Germany.

  1. That’s my great Secretary of Defense !!!! One of a kind, thank God that he is on our side. P.S heard that the reason some GOP were critical of him is because he cut some military programs that were bringing in big bucks to their respective states ???

  2. MICHAEL in MI says:

This is wonderful that he did this.
Obviously though, you know Rumsfeld’s detractors will just say he just did this for a good photo op and publicity to cover up the criticism he is getting. Yeah, someone risks their life in a war zone for that. *rolling my eyes*
As you said, anyone who wants to criticize him should go over to Iraq themselves and do it.

  3. P.Plumley says:

First I’ll say thank you to all the troops keeping the world safe and better for each of us. Second Merry Christmas to everyone here.
Everyone needs to get behind Defense Secretary Don Rumsfeld call those Senators and members of Congress and speak of your support. The MSM can’t seem to find any other news but to keep on complaining about him. He needs to keep his attention focused on other issues than defending himself to the stupid nuts in the media. The President supports him, so the rest of the people should get behind him too.

  4. WK says:

F*ck the MSM after a while. Much of this business against Rumsfeld was contrived, while the non-original Runsfeld signature for death letters was a question, the MSM neglects to report that the ones involved in propagating it were anti-Bush crusaders.
While Rumsfeld may have his faults, what this really about is control and the Dems wanting to exert pressure on Bush to oust him. These idiots really do not have a clue. If they could not oust George Tenet except on his terms, they sure as hell will not succeed in pressuring out Rumsfeld.
The Dems lost the election by all pundit accounts. While the Dems still have a right to be heard, we also have a right to ignore them when they are pushing trash. I suspect much of this Rumsfeld whirlwind is only on the web, Bush could not care less about this environment and he will keep on who he wants. Any questions?

And Michael you have a very valid point, one that is very often downplayed or not emphasized enough. There are way too many experts in this country and throughout the world on Iraq, most of whom have never set foot in the country. I am not an expert on Iraq and do not lend myself out to be one. I have no clue what is really going on there, and I challenge anyone to really say they know and are an expert unless they have first-hand knowledge and seen the situation for themselves. For as strong and strident as many people are on the war, most of these strong views come from those that have not seen the situation in the country and are only reacting to news of soldiers deaths. Please note that also means that I have all the respect for the servicepeople’s views on Iraq, after all they are there and are risking their lives daily. Please also note the servicepeople were disserviced during the election cycle, in my opinion, by the MSM. Our best experts on Iraq were not interviewed or communicated to generally.
The old saying goes ‘For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction’. If we pull out of Iraq now, whatever the past disagreements, that has ominous implications for our credibility everywhere in the world. While it would be nice to not risk American soldiers lives, eventually we would become like the French and Germans following that thought process, and forget that. It’s OK for us to help when its their mass graves being filled, but not for Iraqis.
I have a lot of respect for Rumsfeld going back to Iraq like that right away. he is the troops manager, and wants to be with them and available to talk with them. I have no problem with that, this is the man’s first responsibility.

  6. Rumsfeld Visits Troops in Iraq

Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld visited with American troops again on Christmas Eve (Iraq time), this time a surprise visit in the middle of the Mosul combat zone where an apparent suicide bomber recently killed 22 people, including 14 American se…

    Rumsfeld goes to Kuwait: check
    Rumsfeld goes to Iraq: check
Rumsfeld visited families of dead troops: check
    Rumsfeld visited injured troops: check
But he used an auto-pen. He obviously doesn’t care about our honorable troops—if you drink vast amounts of sh*t flavored Kool-Aid.
Sorry, but this is really pissing me off. The piling onto Rumsfeld over the “auto-pen” thing was too much.

  8. MICHAEL in MI says:

You guys want to be even more pissed off, look at the article the AP wrote up regarding Rumsfeld’s visit. If you didn’t think the AP was against the US, this will prove otherwise:

Two weeks ago at a forward base in Kuwait, a handful of soldiers openly challenged him about inadequate equipment and long deployments.
Rumsfeld cut off their complaints by saying, “You go to war with the Army you have, not the Army you might want or wish to have.” That set off a wave of criticism of the defense chief’s brusque manner.
It was disclosed later that a question about inadequate armor on some vehicles was arranged in advance by a reporter.

Forgive my anger here, but this report is BS!
    1) Rumsfeld did not cut off the soldiers, in fact, he asked him to repeat his question again so he could hear it completely.
    2) That is not the only thing that Rumsfeld said in reponse to the damn question!!!
I’m getting sick of the media working against the administration, specifically Rumsfeld right now, by spreading lies and misconceptions. These people at the AP must have had some lessons on how to write BS stories from Michael Moore.
This is really aggravating me. We need to expose this BS and take down the media. If we don’t, the media will continue working to take down our government.
Speaking of which, I will look for the transcript, but I encourage the Blogs for Bush bloggers to start exposing this nonsense. Someone put the full transcript of Rumfeld’s answer up in a post and then list how the media covered it. We need to expose this crap. I’m tired of it. I’m also tired of hearing liberals repeat this nonsense when I get into debates with them. They are completely ignorant to facts because media outlets like the AP work to keep the facts from them.

Among our great President’s many strengths is his ability to pick the right people for the right jobs, especially the toughest ones like Secretaries of Defense and State. Sorry I won’t be around when historians fairly measure this man and his presidency, but happily my children and grandchildren will. He may very well prove to be the best President ever–in both his first and second terms–given the enormity of the challenges both domestically and globally he’s confronted and dealt with so effectively. And, quite probably, Rummy will be acclaimed one of the best Defense Secretaries in American history. And Condi may well earn the same distinction as Secy of State.
Merry Christmas to all and Godspeed to GWB and his entire team.

  10. This whole Rummy thing has pi..ed me off for a couple weeks now. I knew this would happen, but I never expected it coming from the Republicans. That ticks me even more. Well I have wrote every Senator and told them exactly how I felt (Not enough to get the secret service to my door) but enough to ruffle thier feathers quite a bit. They are NOT going to run my Secretary of Defense out of town without one hell of a fight!!!! If anyone feels as strongly as I do about this here is the 108th Congress email till 2005. Tell them what you think! http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm

The Homespun Bloggers have addressed this on their various blogs. http://www.homespunbloggers.blogspot.com
Be aware, there is one lib in the group, and he invalidates his entire post when he says [paraphrased] “all war is wrong”! The rest of the entries are all a great read for us Rummy defenders.

  12. MICHAEL in MI says:

As the title says, this is a must-read for everyone (via Power Line):
A Must Read Email From an American Soldier!

Then remarkably, the young soldier, who had just lost his left hand and right eye from an explosion, came to the defense of the Secretary of Defense, stating “Mr. Rumsfeld, I want you to know, that you are doing a fantastic job. I know that you are taking a lot of heat for the problems with getting armor for vehicles. I want you to know that things are vastly improved. Our vehicles are great, and I have never searched through junk piles for scrap metal.”
At this point, Rumsfeld looked choked up, and I had a lump in my throat and and watery eyes. It was moving. What makes a man who has been so close to death, and maimed for life, come to the defense of the Army’s highest ranking official? Loyalty, I dare say. Did Rob think Mr. Rumsfeld was having a self-esteem problem? In his greatest hour of need, his thoughts went to the emotional needs of another. I found it quite amazing, and moving. The Secretary took out a coin and gave it to a bystander for him, as if he didn’t know he could touch him. Finally, the soldier said, “Man, Donald Rumsfeld, I wish I could shake his hand.”
Even at that, I felt Mr. Rumsfeld needed some prompting, so I picked up the kid’s arm and looked at the Secretary, and he reached out and took the kid’s hand. After the entourage left, I took the coin and placed it in the soldiers hand, for him to feel and hold. I said, “that’s not one you’ll get every day.” He was happy.

And we have this via Rush Limbaugh’s show today (requires paid subscription to Rush Limbaugh’s website…worth every penny):
    The Troops Support Rummy

Let me move on to audio sound bite No. 5 here. This was in Mosul this morning. Unidentified reporter spoke to one of our soldiers, the soldier’s name, Captain Trust, about Secretary Rumsfeld’s visit and the Captain Trust here is holding a sign saying “Note to Congress: We support Secretary Rumsfeld.” And the question: “What did you think when you got to meet Secretary Rumsfeld?”
CAPTAIN TRUST: Oh, I was absolutely thrilled. I just wanted to show my support for him and I wanted to show the American people that we troops, we support him as well. I think nothing would encourage our enemy more than to see Donald Rumsfeld go. They hate him and that’s why we love him.
RUSH: And if he has the support of the troops, he has the support of the president. I don’t think in this day and age a bunch of recalcitrant Republicans and renegade media types can bring him down. But admittedly, this is one of the reasons for this trip.

I’m going to ask Liberals and Rumsfeld detractors the same question I did before the election about President Bush: If you support our troops and our troops support Rumsfeld and want him as their Secretary of Defense and feel that having him go would encourage the enemy, how on earth do you hold the opinion that Rumsfeld should go? How do you have the audacity to think that you know what is better for the troops? How do you have the gall to say that the troops doing the actual fighting in the field do not know what is best for them, you sitting in the comfort of your own home back in the United States know what is best for them?
I said it then and I will say it now, if you are against Bush’s mission in Iraq and the War on Terror and you are against Defense Secretary Rumsfeld, then you are against our troops. Period. You cannot be against the troops’ Commander in Chief, agains the troops’ Defense Secretary and against the troops’ mission and still “support the troops”.

  15. Michael: You are on a roll! The left is so friggin’ myopic when it comes to Iraq that they have absolutely no idea how pathetic and petulant they sound as they constantly bludgeon us with their prideful inanity. It is but one theater of combat our military is currently engaged in. We held an election for President that was a referendum on this and they lost. I guess they want to marginalize themselves even further.

  16. MICHAEL in MI says:

Michael: You are on a roll!
Hahah thanks, Valiant Elephant. I even was the first to point out the AP story to Power Line and they gave me credit in their post on the matter. Made me feel pretty good. :)
